Thank You- These two words hardly seem enough to say to all our members and friends that took the time to
travel to Merimbula to attend our District Convention and what a fabulous time was had by all.
Where do I start - our aim was to put FUN back into our conventions and we certainly achieved that.
The opening ceremony held on Friday night with our local students from the Merimbula Primary School es-
corting the DG and Dignitaries in and to their seats, then assisting with the Opening Flag Ceremony was
nothing short of fantastic. This was followed by the opening speech from the Mayor of Bega Valley, Kristy
McBain welcoming all to the Sapphire Coast. Once the speeches were completed all the attendees enjoyed
dinner and some fellowship which went long into the night.
On Saturday our Cabinet Secretary confirmed we had members from 44 Clubs and 178 registered.
The members were given a great presentation from Ms Jane Treloggen from the NSW Organ and Tissue Donation Service
based at the Sydney Eye Hospital. Jane spoke on how the organs and skin retrieval were conducted and stored and how many
patients the service has helped both in Australia and Overseas. Jane thanked all Lions for their support and stressed how im-
portant the funding from the Lions Foundations is to the ongoing research.
We were also given a presentation by Mr Geoff Evans and Ms Anastasis Bougesis from Team Rubicon. We learnt how the
organisation began, and that many of their members are retuned ADF personal that feel they still have a lot to contribute. They
along with current and retired EMS personal are often one of the first teams to go in after a disaster. They assist residents with
the clean-up and removal of rubbish and often are just there to listen and talk to the victims of the disaster. Many of you know
how important their role was with the Tathra Bushfires.
Our elections were held with Lion Maxine Helming being elected DGE, Lion Lorna Gordon elected to 1VDG and Lion Nor-
man Fountain elected to 2VDG. Congratulation to you all and I am confident the District is in good hands.
This year we had an extra election as two candidates were standing for International Director, PCC Gary Parker was elected to
represent our District at the Adelaide MD Convention, congratulations to Lion Pauline Dinning being elected as Director
NSW/ACT Foundation.
Saturday night we had over 220 attend the Gala Dinner and were treated to a great night of entertainment with Frankie J Hol-
den and Michelle Pettigrove. We sang and danced the night away and yes they even allowed me up on stage to sing with them.
That was their mistake and it was around midnight when the last of the conventioneers left, during the day Lion Danny
Richardson held the Christmas Cake Decorating competition and with some wonderful entries, I dare say we have some very
talented cake decorators in the District with the winner being Cooma - well done and congratulations. The real winner, of
course, was the Childhood Mobility Foundation with $3600 being raised and donated.
On Friday evening IPDG Peter Sicfleet passed me a very colourful box and asked if we would pass it around at the convention,
with the funds raised be sent to Q1 to assist with the bushfire disaster they are currently facing in Northern NSW. I was happy
to support this idea, however, what I wasn’t expecting was the fantastic response we received with the Cooma Club kicking off
the donations with $2000.00. That was the start – most of our Clubs then set about contacting their Presidents and Boards, it
would take me too long to name all the Clubs that pledged and gave me cheques over the weekend so I simply say thanks to
everyone that donated. The current amount raised is $25,000.00 dollars and our Cabinet Treasurer will arrange for the funds
to be sent to Q1, I cannot express in words how proud I am of our District and all the members in it – you truly are SIMPLY
THE BEST!
Sunday, we paused to remember our members that passed away. As always it was a solemn event held with dignity and pride.
We were then treated to a fabulous presentation from Molly Campbell the winner of the 2012-2013 National YOTY. There is
nothing better than hearing from young adults and their positive outlook for the future and Molly didn’t fail to impress and
inspire us. She has just completed a double degree in Law and Music at the ANU in Canberra - a very inspirational young
lady.

Into October already time is flying by so fast, it’s been a busy time with Club visits. We had a very pleasant
visit to Camden Lioness and Camden Lions Clubs, Harry Hession Awards were presented and 20-year service
badges, the Lionesses had gone to a lot trouble to decorate the tables with great artistic flair, the Lioness Club
have a large number of regular activities and are also busy with their craft get togethers getting ready for
Christmas stalls, Camden Lions also have their regular projects that provide their Club with funds for other
projects.
We also had a very pleasant visit to Liverpool Lions and Liverpool Lioness Club. There were a number of
awards presented to Club members for service to the Community. Both Lions and Lioness have long standing
projects that give them funds to donate to the community. The Lioness volunteer at the Liverpool Hospital as
well as many other projects and craft projects. It was a lovely evening and great to meet Lions we have known
for many years.

Moving on to Bombala at the other end of the District, where we visited Bombala Lions Club and were taken
on a tour around the town to visited projects that the club is progressively adding to over the years, there is the
river walk and the addition of seating along the walk, there is to be the addition of solar lighting to be installed
any day. Interesting is the “Gunnago Park” can anyone guess how/why the park is called that? We enjoyed a
very pleasant evening and a fun night was had by all.

The next day Friday 11 October saw us move onto Merimbula for Convention. We were in-
vited to the Mayors reception in Bega and all Lions received a very warm welcome from
Mayor Kristy McBain who thanked Lions for the work that we do in our communities. Kristy
later at the opening ceremony told us of her Lions Youth Exchange experience to Tahiti.
Saturday saw the convention move into full swing with the election
process getting underway in the morning. I have to admit to being very
nervous and was pleased once the results were reported.

Wednesday, 16 October we headed to Ulladulla and visited the Lions Preloved Bookshop. Wow! What a marvellous
project, the layout and design is top rate, Secretary Gill found me in two minutes flat a copy of a long-lost book, to
replace a copy I loaned and never got back and I am delighted. The shop is managed and maintained by Lions from
the Preloved Bookshop Branch Club. My thanks and appreciation for your time and explanation on this 5.5 day a
week business. The advertising is first rate, certainly this Club is ticking all the boxes with the public relations tick
sheet.
Pam and PDG Allan met up with us for a coffee then we visited the construction site of what will
be Ulladulla Milton Lions new den, and we went to the Jindelara Cottage. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good Day my Lions family.
Time is surely marching on rapidly – well so it seems. I have had a busy month with three club visits, a zone
meeting, a Charter Anniversary, a District Convention and five project visits.
A club visit to Narellan Lions Club was a celebration of great service this club provides. Neighbouring clubs
were invited and I was able to meet members of Macarthur Lions Club, Camden Lions Club and Campbelltown
Lions Club. I was honoured to induct a new member into the Narellan Lions Club. Members were recognised
for their service with various awards. A well-deserved MJF was awarded to Christine Richardson. Congratula-
tions and well done.
My visit to Minnamurra Lions Club was very enjoyable. All I can say is – You Rock Minnamurra Lions.
A beautiful evening with the most welcoming Canberra City Lions Club was immensely enjoyed by Pierre and
me. Your passion to serve your community is so evident. Well done.
A trip to Corrimal for the Zone 1 meeting afforded me the opportunity to meet the representatives of the clubs
in the zone. A group of Lions always ready to serve.
The 60th Charter Anniversary of Austinmer-Thirroul was amazing. I enjoyed listening to the history of this
great club.
The District Convention – if you weren’t there-you’ve missed and enjoyable fun event. Pambula – Merimbula
Lions you can feel very proud of yourselves. You have done a fantastic job.
My project visits were so much fun. I was very impressed with the Driver Reviver set up along the Hume High-
way between Yass and Gunning. It is manned by various volunteer groups including the Bowning and District
Lions Club. They provide the weary travellers with a much needed cuppa, cookies and a scrumptious sausage
sizzle. The travelling public appreciate this valuable service. We enjoyed cooking sausages, making cups of
tea and coffee and having chats with the volunteers and travellers.
Golf Day at Yowani Golf Club provides much need funds for Pegasus’ – Riding for the Disabled Program.
Belconnen Lions Club feeds the hungry golfers their breakfast, lunch and in-between bites. Apprentice Pierre
did well in cooking the bacon and sausage under the watchful eye of expert Brian Inall. Well done Belconnen
for your ongoing support of Pegasus.
ACT Down Syndrome Association enjoys the support of Belconnen Lions as well with their annual Step Up
day. There are many hands on deck and they all have so much fun. Before heading off to Murrumbateman
Field Day, I was able to turn a few sausages and onions. Belconnen your support for this event is greatly appre-
ciated. Well done.
The Murrumbateman Lions were so organised with lions and friends of lions manning their seven drink sta-
tions. They didn’t need my help so we enjoyed walking about and supporting the Lions Club and the Rural Fire
Service (who have lions members connected to them as well) by having a yummy lunch and a much needed
cold drink. Well done Murrumbateman Lions.
A fund raising BBQ supporting the Queanbeyan Hospital Auxiliary was quite challenging for Canberra City
Lions. If the equipment wasn’t held down, it went flying, we were chasing after serviettes, paper towel and
plastic lids etc. Despite the awful gusty wind we had a great morning. The dedication of the team of lions did
not let the wind get them down. Well done Canberra City Lions. The support you give to the Auxiliary is very
much appreciated.
This past month has again reminded me of the wonderful people around me called LIONS. I am so proud to be
among you. It makes me feel so good to be a lion.
Enjoy the month ahead
KEEP SPARKLING

Lioness Report
Camden Lioness & Lions Clubs Hello Lionesses
As you are no doubt aware
by now LCI has made a
decision to disband all
Lioness Clubs by June 30th
2021. I have forwarded all
the information I have
received to your Clubs. In all of the information I
have received there is no mention as to WHY this
is happening. I am still endeavoring to find this out.
In the meantime my advice to you is to speak to
your sponsoring Lions Club, Zone Chairperson, DG
Gordon Matthews or contact Lioness Liz Alcock
MD Lioness Chairperson ( 0422 889899)or Lioness
Wilma Holmes N District ( 0439869229)
There have been various options put to our Clubs as
to the direction Lioness Clubs can take. Consider
them carefully and make the decision that best suits
your Club. Unfortunately, there are some Clubs that
this will affect more than others, particularly the
smaller Clubs, with members preferring to leave
rather than make the transition to a Lions Club.
As asked by PDG and Council Chairperson Kim
Forrest please do not discuss this matter on social
media. It is a sensitive time for Lionesses and we
need to manage this issue with the relevant
personnel in the Lions family.
In the meantime go out there and do what Lionesses
do best…. help your community as you have
always done.
Regards
Lioness Jennifer Murphy

ALF Grant - $5000.00.
Contribution from Monaro High School Leo Club Via Cooma Lions Club - $ 5,104.00.
Total - $10,104.00.
The Monaro High School Leo Club and Cooma Little Athletics have donated a Cough Assist machine to
Cooma boy Louie Mould. Louie sustained a severe spinal cord injury in a trampolining accident in
November 2017.
With Louie’s diaphragm not at full strength, he has difficulty breathing and coughing can be a real danger,
the Cough Assist machine was recommended by the Pediatrics Spinal outreach service to assist Louie to
cough effectively so he can clear his lungs. This is something Louie will need for the rest of his life, so
having it donated has meant a great deal to the Mould family.
Louie’s father Peter says it is an especially vital piece of equipment for when Louie has a cold or flu.
“Without this machine, if Louie gets the flu he could easily end up back in Sydney hospital, at risk of
life-threatening pneumonia said Peter.
“We would like to thank the Leo Club, Little Athletics, Lions Club and the wider community for their
amazing generosity.”
Hosting a well-supported community event ‘Run for Louie’ in 2018, the MHS Leo Club and Cooma
Athletics raised $8,528. Contributing $5,000, the Cooma Lions Club then applied for an Australian Lions
Foundation (ALF) grant on behalf of the MHS Leo Club and Cooma Little Athletics, with the ALF matching
that.

HEARING DOGS
Good Morning All
Our Annual event occurred on Sunday the 22nd of September.
On the day there were more than 700 people in attendance despite the weather putting a bit of a dampener on the
day. This was by far the biggest attendance that we have had in a number of years. We had new sponsors on board, Mt
Barker Pet Care Centre and Black Hawk who are now our nutritional sponsors for ALHD supplying premium dog food
free of charge. They also gave out over 450 free show bags on the day. Additionally to this we had the Australia Hear-
ing Bus to do hearing checks as well as Alpaca patting and our Foster Pups.
Many market stalls on the day added to the event and they were well supported by the visitors on the day.
