Pentecost Sunday
“And I will ask the Father and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always.” Pentecost fulfilled this promise. The Holy Spirit came upon the apostles and noth-ing was ever the same again.
This event is often referred to as the “birthday” of the church. It took Pentecost—and the power of the Spirit—to embolden the apostles to begin their ministry of preaching and baptizing. Conversions began to happen and the early church began to grow. And all of this took place without Jesus’ earthly presence among them.
This is one of the most encouraging elements of the practice of our Christian faith. We believe that through the Holy Spirit, God dwells within us and empowers us. We believe that even though we never walked with Jesus and the apostles, we are nonetheless accompanied by the same Spirit who is always available to us! We only need to stir up this Spirit within our souls by praying sincerely, “Come, Holy Spirit!”
The special hymn of today’s feast, called the sequence, does just this. It also expresses well the package of “benefits” that come from the presence of the Advocate among us: “You, of comforters the best; You, the soul’s most welcome guest; Sweet refreshment here below; In our labor, rest most sweet; Grateful coolness in the heat; Solace in the midst of woe.” And not only do we receive these personal blessings, but the Church herself also re-ceives a tremendous gift. As Jesus said, “The Advocate, the Holy Spirit... will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you.” It is only through this divine guid-ance from on high that the Church has the power and privi-lege to teach and guide us who are still here below.

The Holy Spirit is Always at Work
Our Most Humble Efforts Can Bear Great Fruit.
My friend has never heard of Christ and I want to share the Gospel with her but I'm afraid to. How do I share my faith?
There are a lot of ways to bring up the topic of religion, without being judgmental or pushy. Begin by asking what her thoughts are about religion, or what her experience was growing up. Finding common ground is often easier than you think, because the questions and problems we have about God, the presence of evil, our purpose in life, and our relationship with God are universal concerns.
Why are you afraid? If you do not want to insult or of-fend someone, don't be pushy or judgmental. If you are uncertain about how to explain your own faith, do a little reading or practice with a friend. If you measure success only by this person converting, focus your attention more on beginning the conversation, not on bringing it to a per-fect close! Faith is a journey of many acts of belief, many discussions about God, and many choices about how we practice what we preach. In some we will have great suc-cess; in others we will need forgiveness and perseverance. The most important thing to keep in mind is that the Holy Spirit is always at work and our most humble efforts can bear great fruit. Have faith in God because he has faith in you!

Faithful Citizenship (May 15, 2016)
Last week we finished looking at Part II of Faithful Citizenship, so let’s move on to Part III, where the bishops offer a set of specific policy goals to help guide the consciences of Catholics. This section begins: “As Catholics, we are led to raise questions for political life other than ‘Are you better off than you were two or four years ago?’ Our focus is not on party affiliation, ideology, economics, or even competence and capacity to perform duties, as important as such issues are. Rather, we focus on what protects or threatens human life and dignity.” Here the bishops emphasize that voting is not just about choosing the candidate who I think is best for me, but rather who I think is best for us as a people and nation. It’s not just about seeking my own individual good, but pursuing the common good. And it’s not just about short-term benefits, but about the long-range goal of, as the Pledge of Allegiance puts it, a republic of “one nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all.”
Paragraph 92 introduces the specific policy goals thus: “Catholic teaching challenges voters and candidates, citi-zens and elected officials, to consider the moral and ethical dimensions of public policy issues. In light of ethical prin-ciples, we bishops offer the following policy goals that we hope will guide Catholics as they form their consciences and reflect on the moral dimensions of their public choices. Not all issues are equal; these ten goals address matters of different moral weight and urgency. Some involve matters of intrinsic evil that can never be supported. Others involve affirmative obligations to seek the common good. These and similar goals can help voters and candidates act on ethi-cal principles rather than particular interests and partisan allegiances. We hope Catholics will ask candidates how they intend to help our nation pursue these important goals.”
As the bishops move on to offer ten specific policy goals, they emphasize that not all of the issues are of equal mor-al weight. Throughout the document the bishops try to hold together two seemingly opposite poles. On the one hand they challenge us to take a comprehensive view of the moral issues at stake in our social and political life, to not be-come “one issue voters”. On the other hand, they challenge us to see that not all of the issues in this comprehensive ethic are of equal moral weight; some cry out for urgent response.
Here is policy goal number one: “Address the preeminent requirement to protect the weakest in our midst—innocent unborn children—by restricting and bringing to an end the destruction of unborn children through abor-tion and providing women in crisis pregnancies the supports they need to make a decision for life.”

Come, Holy Spirit, Come
On May 15, we celebrate Pentecost Sunday, which occurs 50 days after Easter. This day commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Apostles and is the birthday of the Church.
This week make it a point to go to the Adoration Chapel and pray to the Holy Spirit to guide you, especially with those matters in your life that may be burdening you. When you feel the Holy Spirit’s peace for you, allow those burdens to take flight like a dove to the heavens and give them up to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. With your renewed sensation of total trust, you will feel the love needed to follow the Lord just like the Apostles did on Pentecost. Come, Holy Spirit, come!
The Chapel is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There is a serious need for adorers in two time slots: Sunday, 12:00 noon to 1:00 !.". and Saturday, 2:00-3:00 !.". For more information, call Joan Taylor 630-530-8963 or
Mary Lewis 630-941-9173.
The Crypt of the Saints
The Crypt of the Saints, located below the Adoration Chapel in the Visitation Parish Convent at 799 S. York Road, is open every Sunday from 9:00 #.". until 1:30 !.".
Over 700 statues, icons and relics are awaiting your prayers, devotion and veneration. Over 600 books about saints are available for your research or reading enjoyment while in the Crypt.
Our newest masterpiece is a miniature replicate of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, completely handmade out of thousands of pieces of olive wood from the Holy Land.
The Rosary of the Unborn Prayer Group meets in the Crypt every Thursday night from 7:00–8:00 !.". If inter-ested in joining them, call Mary Ellyn Schneider at 630-
253-2170. Now you can visit Jesus in the Adoration Chap-el and His saints in the Crypt every Sunday before or after Mass.
Prayer for Priests and St. Peregrine Blessing
If there was ever a need to pray and sacrifice for priests for their preservation and sanctity it is today. In the U.S. alone, since Vatican Council II, we have lost well over ten thousand priests and vocations have dropped almost seventy- five percent.
Praying for priest and bishops has been the practice of the Church since apostolic times. It is a matter of revealed truth. It is a divine mandate. We read in the Acts of the Apostles: “Peter therefore was kept in prison. But prayer was made without ceasing by the church unto God for him.”
Through prayer we gain graces for priests which other-wise they would not obtain. Priests need special graces because they have extraordinary responsibilities before God. Those who are responsible for Christ’s presence on earth are to be of all people, most Christ-like. They are to be patterns of what Christ wants all of us to be.
Each Monday at 7:00 !.". and on Thursday morning after the 8:15 #.". Mass, (approximately 8:45) we pray for our ordained. St. Peregrine blessings are offered every Monday evening after Prayer for Priests.
St. Peregrine service will be celebrated the third Mon-day of the month, combined with Prayers for Priests at 7:00 !.". in the church. Please remember, we need our priests for Holy Mass, sacraments, and direction in the faith. Pray for them.
Thank you
