Berlin-based Max Richter further cements his status as one of the foremost lights of modern composition with his fourth album, a dazzling conceptual exercise of great beauty and emotional resonance.

With a sonic pallette consisting of string quintet, solo piano, 16-track 2-inch tape, transistors, found shortwave radio, vinyl clicks, dust, scratches and rumble, and acoustic guitars, Richter’s latest effort is both beautifully detailed and sonically rich.

The album represents an exploration of the ringtone as a vehicle for music perfor-mance, with each of the 24 tracks a classically-composed ringtone intended to be premiered in a series of gallery spaces, corresponding with an SMS-based interactive performance emphasizing randomness and chance.

Though he is often mentioned alongside contemporary classical composers who rediscovered melody and tonality, such as Arvo Pärt, Henryk Górecki and Michael Nyman, Richter also applies samples and electronics in ways reminis-cent of electronic luminaries like Four Tet or The Books. Throughout his career, Richter has resisted an easy label: combining chamber music with ambient recordings, spoken-word pieces with experimental electronics, he creates a distinctive and beautiful hybrid of the traditional and the futuristic.
