8 Day Math Quest:Plan for Success

•Integrate Math in Focus ( Singapore Math) units with selected Everyday Math units to create our own math curriculum.

•Set sequence of units from beginning to end. Designate review skill for each unit.

•Create and share Google calendar to build and schedule all parts of learning circuits.

10 Things We Learned about Customizing 2nd Grade Math

1. Collaboration between homeroom teacher, learning coach, learning specialist is essential!

2. More 1 to 1 teacher/student interaction

3. More student collaboration

4. Better student engagement

5. Addresses all learning styles

6. Planning for smooth flow of scope and sequence is essential!

7. More opportunities for challenge and reteaching

8. Better problem solving

9. More opportunities to engage in real life math

10 Things We Learned about Customizing 2nd Grade Math

10. I used to think I knew my students, but now I really know my students!

5th GradeMath Teacher:

Taking one step at a time.

• Take things slow

• Have an open mind

• Change as you go

• Be willing to be the learner

• Students will become the teacher

• Know your students more than you ever thought you could

“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live

its whole life believing that it is stupid.” ― Albert Einstein

Importance of Teacher Collaboration

•Knowing where the students are and what they need.

•Going from teacher to teacher with a smooth transition.

Pre Step For Day 1, 2, 3:

Homework - Flipped Lesson

Day 1, 2, 3:

Step 1: 4 or 5 Question Pre-Assessment

Step 2: Reflect on Student's Notes and Teacher's Lessons

FIRST 3 DAYS:WHOLE GROUP INSTRUCTION

Step 3:

CHOICE:

a. Peer Teaching Peer

b. Conference / Meet with Teacher *

*All students must have a conference with the teacher before the end of the day. Conference helps identify where the student is and discusses strategies. The teacher and the student will decide together what he will be working on next.

FIRST 3 DAYS:WHOLE GROUP INSTRUCTION

"Flipping the Classroom" -- refers to swapping the traditional lecture and homework method

of teaching.

• The flipped classroom allows me to work individually with each student

more effectively than the "traditional" classroom would allow.

• The students who catch on quickly are able to move more rapidly through

the material.

• The students who struggle are able to move at a slower pace and take their

time.

"Flipping the Classroom" Tools

You can use the following to record your lessons:

1.ScreenFlow --- $99

2.ShowMe app

3.QuickTime --- You can use this with apple computers.

4.Screencast-O-Matic -- This is free or you can upgrade for $15 year.

I also use PowerPoint and Google Docs to add extra notes and practice problems that I feel the students need to have for each unit.

"Flipping the Classroom" Student Reactions

"My favorite thing about math is the online videos telling you about a new concept

because you can individually see the teacher work out the problems on a blank

board. I also like how you can choose what you want to do and when you want to

do it. It gives you

a lot of freedom."

"My favorite thing about math is that you get to work at

your own pace."

"My favorite thing about math is that I know what I am

going to do every day when I walk into class."

Students decide what circuit they will do

that day.

DAYS 4, 5 & 6LEARNING CIRCUITS

Program created for 6th grade math placement of students on days 4, 5, and 6. Results are ranked from data collected from an online assessment given in Haiku. An email is then sent to the teacher specifying the “circuit” the student should go to. Of course, the teacher can override this placement.

Students are given opportunity to take the mastery assessment test.

The student must earn a 90 or above to move to the Guided Challenge portion of the Math Quest.
