43 CMS students selected for top universities in the UK, USA,
Australia, Japan, Germany, Ireland and Canada, many on scholarship
As many as 43 students of CMS have
qualified for admission among the top
bracket of universities abroad, notably in
USA, UK, Australia, Japan, Germany,
Ireland and Canada. It speaks for the high
level of education imparted at CMS and
the eagerness of students to do
something great after acquiring the high
quality education at CMS. Of these 43
students, 18 are from CMS Gomti Nagar I,
11 from CMS Kanpur Road, five from CMS
Aliganj I, three each from CMS Mahanagar
and CMS Rajendra Nagar I, and one each
from CMS Gomti Nagar II, CMS Chowk
and CMS Rajajipuram I.
February has by and
large been a month of
keeping heads down
and concentrating on
teaching, learning,
revision and exam
preparation. However,
a steady trickle of good
news of our students’ achievements kept
Spirits high. At the time of writing, 43 CMS
students of Class XII have received admission
offers from foreign universities – many
among the top universities of the world,
including Oxford, UCL, Cornell, New York,
Imperial College, etc. Students applied to,
and have received offers from several
universities, many with generous
scholarships attached! The students who
accept offers will start university abroad in
autumn 2017.
The current issue of this Bulletin showcases
the profiles of a few CMS students who
already went to study abroad last autumn
2016. I am also thrilled to report that Shubh
Agarwal of Class XI from CMS Gomti Nagar I
campus got 1590 marks (out of 1600) in the
SAT Maths and English exams of College
Board, putting him above the 99th percentile
of the millions of students who took the
American SAT exam globally this year! Our
SAT exam centres allowing our students to
discover how phenomenally talented they are
(on a global platform), and boosting their
confidence.
I am happy to say that our older alumni are
also doing incredibly well, with all the talents
they honed in our academically rigorous but
nurturing environment. As you will see from
the last page of this Bulletin, they are
conquering the world !
The International Conference of Pre-Primary
and Primary Principals exposed CMS leaders
(Principals, Incharges, Coordinators) and
teachers to new methods of education from
across the world, so we can prepare children
better to meet the challenges of the 21st
century.
CMS won the Governor’s Chal Vaijayanti
Trophy for our Republic Day Tableau,

ENLIGHTENMENT MARCH 2017 (2)
Message from Mr Roshan GandhiDirector of Strategy, CMS
Elections for UP’s State Legislature
have been taking place this month,
and we at CMS have always strongly
encouraged all citizens to vote.
Indeed, at our International
Conference of Pre-Primary and
Primary Principals on 3rd Feb
Lucknow’s honourable District
Magistrate, Mr G. S. Priyadarshi, IAS,
led all present in a pledge to vote.
To students: although the majority of you are not yet of
voting age, I urge you to engage with the political process
nonetheless. By reading about it regularly through
newspapers and online outlets, you will develop a deeper
understanding of the issues faced by the state and
country. It is important to gain knowledge about India’s
problems and their potential solutions, so that in future
you can become agents of positive change and
development.
By vocalising the opinions you form, you can engage in
debate with your family and friends. This will not only
enhance your skills in critical thinking and self-expression,
but will hone your opinions and enable you to make more
informed decisions in the future.
If all young people do this now, you will grow up to be an
informed, engaged citizenry. By building up a real
understanding of the needs of your fellow citizens, you
can effectively hold any government to account. You can
collectively become an unstoppable force for social
progress, working in a variety of ways to improve India
and the world at large. Just because you are too young to
vote does not mean you are too young to get involved:
read, think, understand, engage, and debate!

years of school (Class XI and XII), we
didn't work as much with graphs (and
what all these mathematical concepts
essentially mean in the co-ordinate
system) as we did in the last 3-4 months
in Germany when we used graphical
analysis to cover each of the topics
here. In short: I find the methods used
in the Indian education system to be
very extensive — inevitable as it is,
given the way the system is built; in
Germany, in my limited experience, I
found them to be more intensive and
thorough.
Q. Are you comfortable away from home
at such a young age? What do you miss
in your new ‘home away from home’?
(Are you missing Mum’s food?)
A. It is overwhelming, sometimes,
especially because you have to
suddenly learn to manage all aspects of
your life on your own! Whereas, when
you were at home, all you concerned
yourself with was studying. But I
generally feel comfortable, mostly
because I have the opportunity to
participate in neighbourhood building
activities (Junior Youth Empowerment
Program and the like) alongside my
study program; without which, I think I
would be a little disoriented.
I do miss having my family around, on
certain occasions much more than
others. But, my family, especially my
mother, is very supportive and that
definitely helps regain focus and be
patient and trust in the universe,
especially when I’m having doubts!
What I miss the most is not having to do
e-v-e-r-y-thing yourself, from finances
to the grocery to cooking to washing
your clothes to sweeping your place

Q. Why did you want to
study abroad and
how do you think it
is different from
studying in India?
A. I wanted to study
abroad because it,
very literally, widens
one's horizons. To the limited extent of
my knowledge and based on my limited
experience, an education abroad not
only addresses your academics in a
more application-based, thorough
manner but also places emphasis on
your co-curricular side and gives you
more opportunities to develop that
side of you. My mother works in an
educational institution and often has
the opportunity to consult with other
educationists and visit schools/colleges
abroad. When consulting whether I
should pursue an education abroad,
she was of the same opinion and that
helped in the final decision making of
whether or not I should pursue an
education abroad. Also, my sister has
interned abroad and she had positive
e x p e r i e n c e s t o o , w h i c h a l s o
contributed to the decision making.
An education in India requires you to
cover a lot of syllabus in a very limited
period of time, which is a very
important life skill to acquire if you wish
to sit for any of the all-India entrance
exams and hope to clear them. In my
experience of studying here till now, I
have found that the syllabus for the
same period of time could be drastically
smaller in comparison, but what is
required of you is more fundamental.
For example: Except for one topic,
everything that we covered in this year
of study of Maths in Germany has been
done in some form or another in my
school days back in India. Here we
learned to integrate and differentiate
(very fast!); we learned to work with
vectors just enough to apply them in
Physics. Also, in India in the last two
INTERVIEWS MARCH 2017 (4)
Nothing ever comes to one, that is worth having, except as a result of hard work. —Booker T. Washington
Interviews of some CMS students studying abroad
A. I do not prefer either country over the
other. I do have a sentimental and
patriotic attachment to my home
country. I’m looking to intern in India
this summer and I’m going to intern in
the United States in 2018. I will base my
decision on the work experience I get in
both places.
Q. How has CMS education impacted your
choices and decisions in life so far?
What about your choice to study
abroad?
A. CMS exposed me to incredible people
like Mrs. Amita Chakraborty (CMS
Mahanagar, retd.), Mrs. Chanda Kundra
(formerly CMS GN I) and Mr. Hitesh
Keswani (CMS GN I) who in turn have
had a significant impact on my view of
the world.
Q. How did you manage your finances?
Any pointers to the aspiring students?
A. I applied only to colleges that offered
financial aid and scholarships. I’m
currently on a full-ride scholarship that
covers all my college expenses. I like
being independent and consequently I
also work in a student job so I don’t
have to ask my parents for money for
my personal expenses.
Q. Lastly, do you have a word of advice to
any prospective CMS students who are
planning to study overseas?
A. If you like doing something productive,
learn to do it really well.
Aditya Dwivedi, alumnus of CMS Mahanagar & Gomti Nagar I
Studying at Cornell University, USA, on a 100% scholarship
Q. Why did you want to
study abroad and
how do you think it is
d i f f e r e n t f r o m
studying in India?
A. While in high school, I
had no clear idea
r e g a r d i n g t h e
profession or trade I wished to pursue
in life. The freedom of curriculum
offered by most American universities
seemed like the perfect fit for a
confused student like me.
Q. Are you comfortable away from home
at such a young age? What do you miss
in your new ‘home away from home’?
(Are you missing Mum’s food?)
A. There are moments when I miss home,
e s p e c i a l l y d u r i n g b re a ks l i ke
Thanksgiving when American students
return to their homes, leaving the
campus nearly empty. However, the
tradeoff is more than fair and I have
gained much more than I lose by living
so far away.
Q. Did you find it easy to make friends
there?
A. Yes, most colleges have student bodies
composed of individuals with a very
diverse set of backgrounds and
interests. So you’ll always find a place
to fit in.
Q. Will you come back to India after your
undergrad or do you plan to continue
abroad? If yes, what have you planned?
Sahil Singh Dasawat, alumnus of CMS Kanpur Road Campus
Studying at Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA
Q. Why did you want to
study abroad and
how do you think it is
d i f f e r e n t f r o m
studying in India?
A. I personally wanted to
attain Liberal Arts
Education as it really
helps in shaping your personality on the
whole rather than just being focused in
a single stream like Engineering, or
Politics. Past semester, I loved studying
Theatrical Arts as one of my courses.
Q. Are you comfortable away from home
at such a young age? What do you miss
in your new ‘home away from home’?
(Are you missing Mum’s food?)
A. Yeah, I am very much comfortable in
staying away from home. Actually, I
really like it! I am just missing my family
and Indian Food.
Q. Did you find it easy to make friends
there?
A. Yeah, I have a tenfold bigger friends’
circle here in America as compared to
what I had there. People here are very
friendly and helpful..
Q. Will you come back to India after your
undergrad or do you plan to continue
abroad? If yes, what have you planned?
A. I am not really sure, because I am
pursuing Entrepreneurial Studies. It
completely depends on my startup. My
dad has an import-export business. I
want to run the same business here.
Q. Could you tell us briefly about your
home background–such as your
parents' occupations, socio-economic
status, etc.?
A. I belong to a very lower middle class
background. My dad worked as a Lab
Assistant for 18 years at CMS RDSO
Campus. I understand that the 25 lakhs
per annum is a lot according our Indian
economic standards, but it is only for
one year that dad paid the expenses.
From 2017-2018 onward, I am going to
manage all my expenses on my own.
Q. How has CMS education impacted your
choices and decisions in life so far?
What about your choice to study
abroad?
A. CMS education was really the helpful in
shaping me up. For example, in a
country of intense diversity like the
USA, there are many instances of
severe racism, so at times the
p h i l o s o p h i e s l i ke ‘ Va s u d h a i va
Kutumbakam’ that we were taught in
CMS help in making great decisions.
Also, I am at Xavier University – its
motto is All for One and One for All,
which is what we were always taught at
CMS. So, now as a pass-out from CMS, I
think CMS does a really great job at
shaping you up for the rest of your
journey of life.
Q. How did you manage your finances?
Any pointers to the aspiring students?
A. I have some family savings plus a bank
loan from a US bank and I also work part
time to manage my personal expenses.
Q. Lastly, do you have a word of advice to
any prospective CMS students who are
planning to study overseas?
A. Start the preparation early, and getting
into top universities with scholarships
will be easy. Keep in constant touch
with your counsellor – it really helps!
And in case you are lacking in funds,
there is no need to take heavy debts.
You can get the same dream job that
you desire by studying in any lower
ranked university in USA, too!
with friends after getting to know each
other is the tough part.
Q. Will you come back to India after your
undergrad or do you plan to continue
abroad? If yes, what have you planned?
A. As of now, I am trying to concentrate on
studies and trying not to look too far
into the future. After I finish my
undergraduate studies, I will look into
what it is I want to do (specialize or start
working) and what I have as options. I’ll
consult with my family and friends
about what would be best option.
Q. Could you tell us briefly about your
home background–such as your
parents' occupations, socio-economic
status, etc.?
A. My father was a surgeon (urologist) in
the army and my mother is a teacher
administrator; my sister is an architect
— it's probably unfair not to mention
her. On the demise of my father, we
were raised by my mother alone.
Q. How has CMS education impacted your
choices and decisions in life so far?
What about your choice to study
abroad?
A. CMS pays a lot of attention to spiritual
education and anyone who joins CMS at
a young age (I joined in Nursery)
practically grows up with the ideas of
the oneness of God, Religion and the
World. This is something that is often
taken for granted, but it is anot
common way of thinking all over the
world, or even all over the country. I
became more aware of this when I
came here.
When you grow up thinking this way,
studying abroad doesn't seem scary or
cause anxiety or make you nervous
(other than financially). It made me
look forward to it.
CMS offers a lot of opportunities to train
yourself outside of academics. It made
me want to continue that here, too.
What was most impacting for me
happened after I officially finished
school and I was waiting to move to
Germany for my undergraduate
studies. I had the opportunity to
participate, however shortly and in
whatever little capacity, in the Junior
Youth Empowerment Program (JYEP) at
CMS Gomti Nagar Campus I.
My experience there has really helped
me in my life. It helps me make
decisions on a daily basis and has lent
me more clarity than anything else
could. (I would totally recommend it!)
Q. How did you manage your finances?
Any pointers to the aspiring students?
A. Managing finances can be difficult.
Since Germany has no tuition fee and
one only pays to live here (rent) and for
the transport, library etc, it is relatively
easy. I have a Student Job (I give English
tuitions to German children), but am
supported by my mother mostly. My
only pointer would be what my family
told me: to maintain a log of your
expenses which helps you have
perspective. At first I did not take heed
when I was advised so, with unpleasant
consequences.
Q. Lastly, do you have a word of advice to
any prospective CMS students who are
planning to study overseas?
A. Like I am told repeatedly: do what you
love and give it your best! And one of
my favorite quotes: “Where there is
love, nothing is too much trouble and
there is always time.“
Thanks to Aditya, Sahil, and Ritika
for their contributions. More to
follow in next month’s bulletin!

Deepansh, as the name
suggests, has been
lighting the lamp of
knowledge in faraway
America but his roots
are still strong in Lucknow, India.
Deepansh joined CMS Gomti Nagar
Campus I in 2005 in Class XI and passed
out in 2007 with flying colours in the ISC
Board Examinations. With both parents as
doctors, father a urologist and mother, an
ophthalmologist, Deepansh got good
grounding and encouragement at home
to follow the medical profession. His
sister, Disha Dalela, an ex-student of CMS
Aliganj and brother-in-law are both
doctors following his parents' footsteps,
Deepansh went to King George's Medical
University, Lucknow. His brilliance shone
like the radiant sun when he secured the
highest marks in medical school and won
the Hewett Gold medal for the same
(which his father had also got 28 years
ago). After this unparalleled achievement,
he headed for the United States to
become a urologist. At present Dr.
Deepansh is at Henry Ford Hospital where
he has been doing some good research
work under his mentors and approaching
the 50 publications milestone. He will be
starting his Residency soon.
Recalling his alma mater, Deepansh says
that the one thing nice here is that it
recognizes the efforts of students and
felicitates them. He says that CMS not
only acknowledges and appreciates the
students' efforts but also the pains taken
by the parents and teachers and honours
them.
We wish Deepansh all the best in life!
