A Prayer for Lent
Dear God.
In love for us you sent Jesus
To save us from our sins.
Have mercy on your people today
And help us to begin this time of Lent.
Forgive us our sins and help us
To turn back to your love.
We ask this through
Jesus Christ your son.
Amen
Lent is a period of forty days during the
church’s liturgical year, which begins on
Ash Wednesday and ends Holy Week. It is
a time for Christians to turn away from sin-
fulness, to have a change of heart, as they
prepare for the joyous feast of Easter. It is a
time for prayer, penance, sacrifice and
works of charity for others.
Ash Wednesday
The penitential season began on Ash
Wednesday, which was Wednesday, March
1st, 2017. Our students received ashes af-
ter a short liturgy on that day. Ashes have
been a symbol, since early Biblical times, as
repentance for sin or a sign of grief in
mourning. Ashes are from the charred re-
mains on Palm Sunday the previous year
and are used to make the sign of the cross
on the forehead for the believer. The con-
nection of Palm Sunday and Ash Wednes-
day is appropriate since Jesus’ triumphant
entry into Jerusalem led him quickly to his
death.
The season of Lent lasts for 40 days (not
counting Sundays) and the Church calls us
all to almsgiving, prayer and fasting.
Through our religion classes, the teachers
are encouraging the children to practice our
commitment in a number of ways.
Sacramental Dates
The dates for First Holy Communion for
students will be published in the St. Jerome
Parish bulletin. Our students are asked to
arrive at the church a half hour before the
published time. Grade 7 Confirmation
dates will be published at a later date.
EQAO Primary and Junior Assessments
Each student in Grades 3 and 6 in Ontario
will be assessed in Reading, Writing and
Math for a period of days beginning Tues-
day, May 23rd , through Monday, June 5th,
2017 Kindly avoid booking dental, doctor
and other appointments during this period.
If you have a child in either grade 3 or 6,
you will receive specific communication
and information regarding the Provincial
Assessment just prior to the start of the test-
ing.
Important Immunization Message from
Peel Public Health
Peel Public Health will be reviewing im-
munization records of all students at our
school.
Peel Public Health must have proof that
your child has been fully vaccinated
(immunized) according to the Ontario im-
munization schedule. During the record
review, you will receive a letter from Peel
Learning and Growing Together with God
March 2017 Newsletter
Public Health if your child’s record is incomplete. It will
tell you what vaccinations your child needs to meet the
requirements for Ontario.
Immunization records are considered incomplete if:
Peel Public Health has not received your child’s
vaccination record or
Your child’s record does not show that he/she has
had all the required doses of vaccine (e.g. infant
and booster doses) or
You do not have a valid exemption from immun-
ization for your child
If you receive a letter, please be sure your child has re-
ceived the required vaccination(s), then give the date(s) to
Peel Public Health immediately to update your child’s rec-
ord.

Think Papers/ Conduct Reports
At Pauline Vanier we use a variety of techniques to deal
with misbehaviour. One technique that some staff use is a
Think Paper. The think paper is a tool that requires your
child(ren) to reflect on what they have done and what they
should/would do the next time a similar situation were to
occur. The think paper is then brought home to parents to
share and be returned the next day signed. It is our hope
that you would discuss the situation with your child. If a
child receives three or more think papers a staff member
would then complete a Conduct Report. If your child re-
ceives a conduct report they have a conversation with the
principal. They will then be given an appropriate conse-
quence and you would be notified. Teachers can also com-
plete a conduct report / safe school report if the behaviour
is very serious and needs parental involvement and atten-
tion right away.
Safe School Departure
Parents who are picking up children at the end of the day
are strongly encouraged to use the Kiss “N” Ride. If you
are meeting your child(ren) you are asked to meet them
outside the exit that your child(ren) use at recess times.
The front foyer has a great number of students exiting at
dismissal time and parents and other adults waiting to pick
up children causes congestion and sometimes an unsafe
situation.
Are You Moving?
School organization for next year is in the planning stages.
Timelines for making decisions about the number of classes
and teacher assignments will be tentatively determined by
the end of June. To help us with our planning for Septem-
ber 2017, it would be appreciated if you could let us know
now if you will be moving out of our school area in the
near future or over the summer.
Flexible Boundary Procedure
A reminder to parents/guardians of students currently in
grades SK to grade 8 and are at Pauline Vanier School un-
der Flexible Boundary.
This procedure is reviewed annually.
Permission is granted under the following conditions:
i) Transportation is your responsibility. The Board will not
provide either transportation or additional supervision for
students admitted under this procedure.
ii) This permission for attendance will be reviewed by the
Principal, annually, no later than April 3, 2017.
iii) The student admitted under this procedure does not
automatically become eligible for the secondary school
serving this school. If it is not the secondary school he/she
would normally attend, application for Flexible Boundary
consideration will have to be made to the secondary school
principal at the appropriate time.
If you would like to continue to be granted permission un-
der this procedure for the 2017-2018 school year, please put
your request in writing to Ms. Maas by Monday, April 3,
2017. Confirmations for Flex Boundary will be communi-
cated in May for grade 1 to 8.
March Virtue of the Month is KINDNESS
During the month of March, we celebrate the virtue of
“KINDNESS”. God has given us the gifts of friends and
companions to keep us company and to help us get along.
Every person in our lives carries the Spirit of God and so
every person is our brother and sister through Jesus Christ.
As brothers and sisters who share one Holy Spirit, we are
all valuable to God. We all deserve to be shown concern
for our welfare and our feelings. We have all been given
the Spirit called kindness. Kindness can only be seen
through actions. It’s not enough to say I will be kind or I
am kind.
A kind person
Says nice things about others so they feel good about
themselves
Sticks up for people who are picked on or need help
Refuses to join others who are insulting, intimidating,
mean or harmful
Watches and looks for ways to help those in need
Bullying Prevention Corner– Bullying Can Be Stopped
This month we look at safe strategies students can use
when faced with a bullying situation. Students will have
the opportunity to learn how to deal with bullying using
the ‘3 R’s’ - Recognize bullying behaviour; Refuse to be
bullied; Report bullying behaviour. There is no set for-
mula that works with every bullying situation. Students
need to learn a variety of strategies and the skill to deter-
mine when and how to apply them safely. Key strategies
that will be addressed during morning announcements
include: avoiding, playing with others, staying calm, ignor-
ing, walking away, walking away with an explanation, say-
ing ‘stop’. Being assertive and telling an adult.
Tips for Parents:
Review strategies with your child
Help your child practice speaking assertively (role
play)
Take time with your child to make an appropriate and
safe plan for how you want them to deal with situa-
tions
Eco-News Update
Our school Eco Team have been busy monitoring each class
every day during our Eco Challenge. They are pleased to
report that students have been working really hard to con-
serve energy and reduce the amount of waste produced
every day at our school.
On Friday, March 10th, the students will be participating in
The Great Gulp! The Region of Peel is sponsoring this
event to create awareness about the importance of Peel
drinking water in our lives. We will be asking all students
to fill up their reusable water bottle or cups and we will
simultaneously sip, drink and gulp in celebration of tap
water!
In addition the Eco Team is currently surveying students
on how they get to school and home each day. The Eco
team is working with the Peel Public Health Department to
gather data that will assist students who are walking and
or biking to school.
Thank you to all families who continue to support our
efforts in doing our part to help our Environment!
Walking Club
On Wednesdays at lunch a group of about 20 students take
part in the Pauline Vanier Walking Club. This group takes
walks in the neighborhood for both exercise and education.
During this time we discuss pedestrian safety rules and
etiquette, learn about the local flora and fauna, visit parks
and local landmarks.
Book Fair 2017
Mrs. Venalainen would like to thank everyone who attend-
ed the Scholastic Book Fair on February 9th and February
10th. It was fabulous to see the enthusiasm for books and
reading by students and parents. The goal of our Book Fair
was to provide students the opportunity to purchase books
of their own and to also fundraise for our library. We are
pleased to announce that we were able to add about 100
new and exciting books to our library collection. A very
special thank you goes out to the many volunteers who
assisted with running the fair: Mrs. Brohart, Quinton, Vin-
nie, Andrea, Annika, and Rachel.
Innovation Grants
Reflecting our call to affirm our Catholic Faith in word, ac-
tion and all we do, we continue to foster the development
of caring, safe and inclusive environments. Innovation
grants allow us to personalize this goal at a school level.
Continuing with this goal, the Innovation Grant criteria has
a new focus for the 2016/17 year.
The innovation grants will be used in support of student
projects that identify barriers to engagement in their own
Catholic school community, working toward finding solu-
tions to engage the community in support of achievement,
equity, inclusion and well-being. (Taken directly form the
grant application form.)
We are pleased to announce that students at Pauline Vanier
School have applied for and received a grant of $1000.00
each for the following projects:
Film and Social Media Program at Pauline Vanier It’s a hands on active learning project for students to learn about the film industry. It will also help Pauline Vanier be more recognizable and will bring more money to the school. We will also help students with work or big projects through videos. Acting, singing, dancing and com-munication skills will also be included. Class of Greens at Pauline Vanier “We think that we should have a Class of Greens. A Class of Greens would be in a classroom that is not being used in our Porta Pak. In this classroom we would try to grow strawberries, lettuce, spinach, carrots, peppers, and other vegetables under special lamps.” Then we would transplant some things into our outdoor vegetable garden in the spring and use the food we grow in our Breakfast Club and at our Special Needs cooking class. We would also plant seeds for flowers to make the school more attractive.” Prologue to the Performing Arts at Pauline Vanier – Three Little Pigs - Les Trois Petites Cochons “A theatre group called Dufflebag Thearte would be hired to perform at our school. The play we have chosen is the Three Little Pigs/ Les Trois Petites Cochons which is a bilingual play they offer. We will be inviting the children from the PLASP daycare center to join us at the perfor-mance.” And the Tech Goes On After school a staff member will supervise students who have shown an interest in having more access to technology. The expectation would be that students would be working on assignments and or be on education-al websites during this time. An after school snack and drink would also be offered prior to the start of the session. Parental permission would be obtained for students to remain at school and to participate in the after school snack program.
Many thanks to the following students for their ideas and
input into the grant application process: Rachel H., Alexia M.,
Daniela T.R., Curtis B. B., Alexis O. A., Alexis T., Aaliyah W., Le’Nayiah O.A., Isabella D., and Shanaia F. Thank you to the fol-lowing staff for assisting with these projects: Mrs. R .Haddad, Mrs. S. Rigato and Mrs. T. Winckler
