SENIOR CENTER
S H I R L E Y D O A N E
Dear Friends…
“If they could see us now...” remember that commercial about
people having a great time on a cruise? Sometimes I wish our
local community that does not participate here at the center
could see what I see here everyday — People actively partici-
pating in programs or volunteering to better their body, mind
and soul and socially interacting with others to better theirs.
The misnomer “Senior Center” has its purpose but is often
misunderstood. Some may think it’s slow paced and dull. But
from my point of view it’s not just for “seniors” as we have
come to assume. It is simply a community within a commu-
nity, a place to gather to eat, play and receive food for
thought. I know many of you realize this already and I hope
more will not be afraid to come and see what we are all about!
Spread the word! Hope to see you soon!

The Senior Center is excited to host the first in a series of
monthly education programs for anyone interested in learning
about dementia. See Page 2 for details. Presented by Julene Bowe,
Outreach Specialist, Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Wisconsin It
It is easy being pleasant when life flows by like a song, but
the man worth while is the one who will smile when every-
thing goes dead wrong. For the test of the heart is trouble,
and it always comes with years, and the smile that is worth
the praises of earth is the smile that shines through the tears.
Until we meet again,

Article written by: Lynda Cran
I’ve been thinking a lot about families, and what family means to us.
I was adopted, so I grew up in the most loving nontraditional family. Being different
from my friends families never mattered.
Most families are traditional, mom, dad, children, aunts, uncles, grandparents and pets,
but there are some nontraditional families out there. Godparents, step-parents, adoptive
parents, foster parents, two mom or two dad families. Or organizations like “The
Shirley Doane Senior Center”.
A lot of our wonderful members think of the senior center and it’s people as their family.
Family to me means people, related or not, who care about others and what is best for
everyone. We don’t always have to agree, but love and friendship matters in every fam-
ily.
