Doane Stuart CommunityAll Doane Stuart families are encouraged to attend a col-lege counseling program on Tuesday, October 20 at 8:30 a.m. in the Golub Interfaith Chapel. Dan Lundquist will speak to families about college admissions, fi t and affordabil-ity. Mr. Lundquist has worked in admissions at a variety of institutions including the University of Pennsylvania, Union College and the Sage Colleges. He is uniquely qualifi ed to address questions about many types of schools and can also speak from his perspective as a parent who navigated the process. The program is a wonderful opportunity for Doane Stuart families.

Sophomores and JuniorsAll sophomores and juniors will take the PSAT on Wednes-day, October 14. It is important for students to arrive on time with pencils and an approved calculator. Doane Stuart covers the cost of the test for all students. Practice tests are available in Ms. Bracken’s offi ce. While the PSAT is not used in college admissions (in fact, colleges will never see a student’s PSAT score), it is a helpful way for students to gain familiarity with a standardized test. Juniors who score exceptionally high may be eligible for National Merit recog-nition. Extensive prep for the PSAT is not necessary. Stu-dents should take the time to review the practice guide and familiarize themselves with the test format.Seniors will spend the morning of October 14 working with Ms. Bracken. Freshman classes will meet on a regular schedule. Please contact Ms. Bracken with questions about the PSAT.

Watch for these; they are easy to miss, and the police do enforce the speed limit.-- Also easy to miss is the “no right turn on red” sign at the light at Wash-ington and Forbes Avenues. Ringing in the new yearDoane Stuart’s 40th year had its offi cial start at our Convocation ceremony on Wednesday, September 9 in the Golub Interfaith Chapel. This annual Doane Stuart tradition kicks off the year as students, faculty and staff gath-er to begin the process of once again bind-ing our learning community together with shared goals and interests. Mr. Hodgkin-son opened the ceremony with a prayer and a warm welcome and at the end of the service, bells were rung to start the year’s journey.

This year we were honored to welcome Mrs. Elle Houle Dietemann and Mrs. Christine Roy Faber who joined us to ring in the new year. Mrs. Dietemann and Mrs. Faber are members of the class of 1976, the fi rst senior class in what was, in September 1975, the fi rst year we opened as The Doane Stuart School. Mrs. Sharon Duker, President of the Board of Trustees, offered the closing prayer.

Doane Stuart Art Teacher Jason Blue Lake Hawk Martinez (father of Isabella ’20) had four pieces featured in the 3rd Annual Coaster Show, held at the La Luz De Jesus Gallery in Hollywood, CA. Jason’s work, which sold during the exhibition, is on display until September 27. The exhibition allows artists to explore the 4” round medium and create an incredible range of pieces that are “playful, frightening, experimental and surprising in their execution.” Visit http://laluzdejesus.com/the-3rd-an-nual-coaster-show-harold-fox/ to see the entire coaster collection (over 1000 pieces!) and visit www.doanestuart.org/news to see high-res images of Mr. Martinez’s artwork.

Building community

FRESHMAN RETREAT Just before the start of school, the class of 2019 traveled to Camp Chingachgook in the Adirondack Mountains for their Freshman Re-treat. Each year, the freshman class enjoys two days of adventures, includeing team building exercises and games, rock wall climbing, ca-noeing and more.

The Retreat brings the freshman class together for the fi rst time and allows students the opportunity to meet their classmates and teachers and make new friends. It also gives students the chance to ask ques-tions about Doane Stuart and about what it will be like to be a ninth grader. Most importantly, it is a chance to have a lot of FUN!

A special thank you to the following faculty members who accom-panied the freshmen on their retreat: Juan Ocampo, Assistant Upper School Dean of Student Life; Jenna Barbary, Upper School Science; Ashley Sigond, Upper School History and Jim Wheaton, Upper School History.

SKYE FARMThe Middle School once again enjoyed two days of fun, adventure, community and team building at Skye Farm, a favorite tradition for 18 years. Despite the rain and chilly weather, the students swam, canoed and hiked. New students participated in the tradition of choosing either a blue or green team allegiance.

Skye Farm brings Middle School students together in the spirit of community, friendship and teamwork, with the goal of carrying that spirit on throughout the School year. Thank you to all of the Middle School faculty and to the following Seniors who joined in the fun: Meghan Araldi, Sophie Fusco McKeown, Jonny Hacker, Aaron Kerr, Andrew Nakushian and Emma Schillinger.

Visit DoaneStuart.org for many more photos in the Skye Farm 2015 Photo Gallery!

Doane Stuart Parent Association:

Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year at Doane Stuart!

For many of us, the return to school is fi lled with a plethora of emotions but, most importantly it signifi es the next step in the academic and personal growth of our children. For our returning families, it is a time to reconnect with our Doane Stuart com-munity. For our new families, a very warm welcome to you with the hope that you are enjoying the start of your new adventure here and are fi nding our community to be helpful and supportive of all of your needs.

The Parent Association exists to support our entire school community, from our hard-working faculty and staff to the many students and families that call Doane Stuart their academic home. We meet on a monthly basis – all meetings are identifi ed in the Doane Stuart school calendar – generally our meetings are held on a Wednesday morning from 8:00 to 9:00 AM in the Corning Conference Room. We are introducing a conference call option for those families that cannot attend in person. Please see below for the dial-in information. An update of our activities is included in each of the Doane Stuart newsletters distribut-ed monthly to our families. Additionally, division and class representatives will reach out as appropriate to share grade level or division level information and requests.

The Parent Association is committed to providing support in a variety of areas. As such, we have the following committees that have been formed and are looking for volunteers to participate and continue their momentum:• Booster Club (Alan Metz)• New Family Outreach/Recruitment (Marjorie Gorelik)• Gala Support (Joanmarie Dowling)• Corporate Charitable Giving (coordinate efforts to earn free money for school – BoxTops; Price Chopper; Target; Amazon Smile; Hannaford; others)• Technology Initiatives (working in partnership with DS current efforts)• More to come…suggestions welcome!

We currently have several positions open – please contact Tami Cole at [email protected] for information or to volun-teer. See the back of this fl yer for a list of all current positions.Positions need to be fi lled by October 1st – so please communicate your interest no later than September 30th.
