Facsimile of the beginning of the Magna Carta.King John's unsuccessful military efforts were expensiveand required heavy taxes. The barons of the realm finallyrebelled and in June 1215 forced the king to accept theMagna Carta or Great Charter. This charter limited theking's powers in various ways, declaring that he was notabove the law. It was reissued later in several modifiedversions. The chart below shows descents from two of the25 barons who were sureties, responsible for guaranteeingthat the king followed the charter.

William de Huntingfield, Knight, of Huntingfield,Suffolk.

Richard Basset, Knt.;b. ca. 1274. He wascontinually employedin the Scottish warsand was summonedto Parliament asRicardo Basset deWeledon. He wastaken prisoner at theBattle of Bannock-burn in 1314 anddied less than twomonths later.

Joan de Huntingfield,daughter of Roger deHuntingfield, Knt.,and great-great-granddaughter of theMagna Carta Surety.

Humphrey Stafford,Esq., of Grafton, etc.,Knight of the Shirefor Worcester-shireand Warwick-shire;b. Grafton,Worcestershire, ca.1427, executed byorder of King HenryVII at Tyburn, 1486,for his support ofKing Richard III.

Katherine Fray; b. ca. 1447, d. 1482; daughter of John Fray, Knt.,Chief Baron of theExchequer.

William Malet of Curry Mallet, Somerset.

John Greville ofDrayton, Oxfordshire,Justice of the Peacefor Gloucestershireand Warwickshire; hewas the only son ofRalph Greville andMargaret Poyntz.

Jane Forster;daughter ofHumphrey Forster,Esq., of Harpsden byHenly, Oxfordshire;she and her husbandwere dead by 21Apr. 1507.

William Almy, ofPortsmouth, RI; b. Dunton-Bassett,Leicestershire,England, ca. 1601, d. Portsmouth, 1677.He and his familysailed toMassachusetts on theAbigail in 1635. Theysettled permanentlyin Portsmouth, RhodeIsland, about 1642.

Audrey Barlow; b. ca. 1601, m.Lutterworth, England,1626, d. after 1676.

Christopher Almy; b. Dunton-Bassett,Leicestershire, 1632,d. Newport, RI,1712/13.

Elizabeth Cornell; b. 1636/37, m.Portsmouth, RI,1661, d. Newport, RI,1714.
