Descents from Magna Carta Sureties to Audrey (Barlow) Almy Facsimile of the beginning of the Magna Carta. King John's unsuccessful military efforts were expensive and required heavy taxes. The barons of the realm finally rebelled and in June 1215 forced the king to accept the Magna Carta or Great Charter. This charter limited the king's powers in various ways, declaring that he was not above the law. It was reissued later in several modified versions. The chart below shows descents from two of the 25 barons who were sureties, responsible for guaranteeing that the king followed the charter. William de Huntingfield, Knight, of Huntingfield, Suffolk. Richard Basset, Knt.; b. ca. 1274. He was continually employed in the Scottish wars and was summoned to Parliament as Ricardo Basset de Weledon. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Bannock- burn in 1314 and died less than two months later. Joan de Huntingfield, daughter of Roger de Huntingfield, Knt., and great-great- granddaughter of the Magna Carta Surety. Humphrey Stafford, Esq., of Grafton, etc., Knight of the Shire for Worcester-shire and Warwick-shire; b. Grafton, Worcestershire, ca. 1427, executed by order of King Henry VII at Tyburn, 1486, for his support of King Richard III. Katherine Fray; b. ca. 1447, d. 1482; daughter of John Fray, Knt., Chief Baron of the Exchequer. William Malet of Curry Mallet, Somerset. John Greville of Drayton, Oxfordshire, Justice of the Peace for Gloucestershire and Warwickshire; he was the only son of Ralph Greville and Margaret Poyntz. Jane Forster; daughter of Humphrey Forster, Esq., of Harpsden by Henly, Oxfordshire; she and her husband were dead by 21 Apr. 1507. Sir Edmund Tame's Tame impaling monumental brass. Greville. Edmund Tame, Knt., of Fairford, Glouces- tershire; d. 1534; two monumental brasses at Fairford. He was called "brother-in-law" in the 1528 will of Sir Edward Greville, son of John and Jane Greville (above). 1 Agnes Greville; her arms impaled by those of her husband (above) appear in their monumental brasses at Fairford. Humphrey Stafford, Knt., of Blatherwick; b. ca. 1505, d. 1548. 1 Margaret Tame; as a widow she m. 2nd John Cope, Knt., who died (before her) in 1557/8. Thomas Barlow, of Huncote, Leicestershire. 2 Ellen Stafford. Stafford Barlow of Lutterworth; he was living in 1626, when he consented to the marriage of his daughter Audrey. Dunton-Bassett, Leicestershire, England, ca. 1601, d. Portsmouth, 1677. He and his family sailed to Massachusetts on the Abigail in 1635. They settled permanently in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, about 1642. Audrey Barlow; b. ca. 1601, m. Lutterworth, England, 1626, d. after 1676. Christopher Almy; b.
