OrganizedbyUnitedWayofNewYork’sWomen’sLeadershipCouncil,theluncheonraised$935,000andwasexpectedtotop$1millionthroughfurtherdonationsandtheauction.AlltheproceedsbenefitReadNYC,aninitiativetoboostliteracyandimproveeducationaloutcomesforlow-incomeNewYorkersbyfocusingongrade-levelreading.“Doyouguysfeelthepowerintheroom?”askedSheenaWright,presidentandchiefexecutiveofUWNYC.“Seventy-fivepercentofthosewhohaven’tlearnedbythethirdgradetoreaduptoyourlevelwon’tgraduatehighschool.It’sthebiggestpredictorofnotbeingabletograduate.”AmayaGarcia,afirst-graderwhoimprovedherreadingskillsthroughReadNYC,waspresentedwithagiftfromMacy’sandticketstothenextMacy’sThanksgivingDayParade.Shesaidherfavoritebookwas“Chrysanthemum,”aboutamousewhogetsteasedaboutherlongname.
