JACKSONVILLE FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH w w w . j a x f u m c . o r g
Processional on the Square, and the Holy Week services
on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.
The Outreach work area report, presented by Bernice
George, reminded the CT that the 2017 pledge to the
Mission Fund is approximately $2,000 less than 2016.
Contributions to this fund will be watched closely in the
coming months. Mike Limerick requested permission to
build a hot house next to the Garden of Eatin’ (the Com-
munity Garden). The small hot house will enable the gar-
den to start some spring plants earlier and then transfer
the plants to the garden.
Stacie Johnson presented an idea for a new way of caring
for our congregation as part of the Nurture work area
report. She proposed to the CT an opportunity for the
whole congregation to celebrate new life and new begin-
nings by hosting a “Blessing” for expectant families and
engaged couples. Everyone is encouraged to briefly drop
by the parlor on the way to Sunday school to bless the
couple or family.
The remainder of the meeting provided the CT an op-
portunity to discuss a couple of adaptive ministry chal-
lenges. The first challenge is providing intentional mem-
bership care for all who call JFUMC home. As result of
the discussion we will begin exploring various dimen-
sions of a lay shepherding team. The second challenge is
“How we can reach and include new people?” As a re-
sult, we will begin exploring the possibility of starting a
new worship service for new people.
The next meeting of the Connectional Table is scheduled
for March 12, 3:00 p.m.
Grace and peace,
Lyle
by Rev. Lyle Holland
The Connectional Table (CT) met Sunday, February 19,
at 3:00 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room. Matt Watkins,
CT chair, called the meeting to order. Following an open-
ing prayer, the January minutes were reviewed and ap-
proved as read.
The CT’s work began with the administrative committees:
Finance, Staff-Parish, and Trustees. Finance, with the
assistance of Dora Hayes, presented the January Financial
Report to the CT. The 2017 Budget and January Report is
available on the church website. The Finance Committee
led the CT in a discussion regarding our current banking
relationship with BBVA Compass. A decision was made
to study other options and to have a report prepared for
the March meeting. Finally, an update on the Feasibility
Study was provided.
The SPRC, led by Pat Borstorff, reported on the adoption
leave plan for Stacie Johnson, Children’s Ministry Direc-
tor. We have agreed to a plan with Stacie which will serve
the needs of her family and provide for continuity in the
ministries she leads.
The Trustees report, provided by Cody Jennings, ad-
dressed a recent request by the Cub Scouts to hold a lock-
in in the Scout Hut. A few years ago lock-ins were pro-
hibited in the church building proper, but the Scout Hut
as an out building had not been addressed. Tentative ap-
proval of this request was granted. However, a few details
remain, such as a liability waiver for activities on church
property.
The Worship and Witness work area report, presented by
Connie Thompson, included upcoming events during
Lent such as Ash Wednesday 7 a.m. drive-thru imposition
of ashes and the 7 p.m. worship service, the Palm Sunday

LENT 2017: LIVING OUR BAPTISMAL CALLING All Christians are called through their baptism to this ministry of serv-
anthood in the world to the glory of God and for human fulfillment.
-
United Methodist Book of Discipline (2016)
Lent is a season for self-examination and renewed com-
mitment to Christian discipleship. This is rooted in the
historic practice of preparing converts for baptism on
Easter morning. This Lent we will explore the baptismal
covenant commitments we made either at our baptism or
confirmation, as we reconnect to God’s call on our lives
through our baptism.
