Loading zone data can help improve deliveries

Transport for NSW recently conducted an analysis of when and where loading zones are used across the Sydney CBD. The findings suggest there are opportunities for operators to complete deliveries more efficiently by retiming deliveries outside peak periods.

Across the CBD, loading zones are less occupied during the early morning (before 7am), throughout the afternoon, especially after 3pm, and overnight. This information is particularly useful for deliverers who wish to plan their CBD activities in a more effective and productive manner and reduce wasted travel time and distance during peak-periods. This could present great opportunities for less time sensitive deliveries.

A large beverage supplier is using the data to investigate when there is likely to be more free loading zones spaces in different parts of the CBD. Armed with this data the company is retiming delivery routes to improve productivity and reliability.

Transport for NSW has recognised the value of the loading zone data and is working towards making it available to all operators through the MySydney website.
