Focused and diffused modes of thinkings
What you probably already know but maybe never really
thought about it:
Learning How to LearnAssignment #2Oct14
Your brain works differently when you are trying really
hard to solve a math problem or understanding thechemical process involved in the generation of carbon
dioxide when compared to drifting away in thoughts and
ideas when you are running or almost falling sleep.
This is the focused mode
And this is the diffused mode

Focused and diffused modes of thinkings
But what you probably did not know...
Learning How to LearnAssignment #2Oct14
Is that BOTH modes of thinking are very important for learning,
specially when you are looking into something new.
So take advantage of that DIFFUSED MODE to make newconnections between subjects and learn different things! That
pleasant time you spend running between your FOCUSED MODE
study sessions is more useful than you might thought.
DIFFUSED MODE

Focused and diffused modes of thinkings
Also...

This guy already knew the importance of the diffused mode of
thinking.
ThatsThomas Edison by the way. He was born in 1847 and
invented the lightbulb, amongst a few other things...

Procrastination
What you probably already know but maybe never really
thought about it:
Learning How to LearnAssignment #2Oct14
Is that you keep postponing tasks in detriment of more pleasant
activities. So, instead of studying, you end up watching some TV
or read a website.
This happens because when you consider starting a
task that you really dontlike, your brain activates
some of its areas causing a neurodisconfort.

Procrastination
Learning How to LearnAssignment #2Oct14
But what you probably did not know...
Is that researchers discovered that soon afterwards you start
that task the neurodisconfort disappears!
Try to keep in mind that the long term satisfaction of achieving yourgoals (Hey, Ivemanaged to study this subject) is much more rewarding
than procrastinating (I watched TV the whole afternoon).
Also, everyone has problems with procrastination, so dontgive up!

Key techniques to help students learn
There is an excellent article written by John Dunlosky that lists
some strategies to help you learn better that I recomend you toread. Nonetheless, in the next slides Illlist not only a few of
professor John Dunlosky strategies but also some
recommendations by Dr. Barbara Oakley and Dr. Terrence
Sejnowski that I really would like to share.

INTERLEAVEDPRACTICE
That means spacing the time period you dedicate to
study one subject across several days or even months.
Researches proved it to be much more efficient than
MASS PRACTICE (when you keep going at a subject forlong hours).
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF DIFFUSED MODE
If you are really having trouble solving an
issue, sleep or run on it. The diffused mode
will take over and having your brain working in
a different mode might actually help you a lot.

Key techniques to help students learn
Learning How to LearnAssignment #2Oct14
This is really important. Whatever the way you find best
to study, keep in mind that what matters is how much
youvelearned and not how much time youvespent. Beefficient! This way youlllearn more and have more free
time for your other activies!
