Governor Schwarzenegger:
The University of California, the CSU system, and the state's community college system are
among the most valuable assets the state has. These facilities represent an investment in
California's future, and I cannot think of any more valuable investment the state can make. As
a student of University of California, Davis I see the direct effects of an underfunded university.Entire departments are being shut down because of lack of funding. Many of my friends are
facing their senior years without any degree to be had, because the have worked for three
(and some for four) years towards a degree they can no longer get.
The UC regents can tell you all about the “brain drain” and loss of research grants and
resources because of the state's disinvestment in education, but I wanted to make sure you
know that real people are being hurt. Real people who have worked hard and struggled to
make their way to the UC system, so that they can earn a degree and become a productive
member of the California workforce are being forced to work three jobs to pay for their UC
public education. Others are being forced to drop out of college altogether to work low-paying
student jobs because they cannot work enough hours to afford to go to school and still pay for
housing and food.
My friends are struggling to pay for a public education – and education that should be
accessible to ALL Californians. I urge you to support the University of California and all public
higher education in California in the upcoming budget process, and re-invest in California's
future.
Sincerely,
Tim KerbavazSecond-Year Student, UC Davis
