Welcome to the First Let’s Make Math Fun Edition for 2012.
Many are claiming that 2012 will be a year of great change. I am hoping that if we work
together we can make some big changes too! Let’s see if we can change kids’ attitudes
towards math and develop their skills and confidence. Hopefully, this can be as simple to do as
making math more enjoyable for kids. This edition is loaded with simple ideas to do this.
It starts with a classic game that can be used to practice many different skills. I Have+ Who
Has? is sure to become a favorite. It’s ideal for large groups but you could easily adapt it for
small groups or use it as a matching game with an individual child. A multiplication version is
included and also a blank template so you can make your own game. Of course there also are
many more games to keep the kids busy.
Till next time!

I Have… Who Has?
This is a terrific math game for the classroom. You will love this game because it involves all of
the children in the class. You can make your own game but there are some great commercial
versions of this game available. The game can be adapted to cover a variety of skills and ability levels.
It is simple to organize and play. To play you will need 30-35 cards. Each card will have the
following words with the blanks filled in appropriately to provide practice in your chosen skill.
‘I HAVE +.. WHO HAS +.?’ The following are some of the skills that the game can practice.
Basic multiplication - ‘I have 24. Who has 6 x 7?’
Basic addition – ‘I have 25. Who has 18 + 4?’
Basic subtraction – ‘I have 8. Who has 20 – 4?’
Fractions – ‘I have 7. Who has 2/3 of 30?’
Place Value – ‘I have 4,289. Who has 3,000 + 800 + 20 + 5?
Complex Operations – ‘I have 75. Who has 9 X 6 + 5?’
If you are making your own set of cards, remember that for each of the ‘Who has’ questions
there will be card with a corresponding ‘I have’ answer.
This game is available in book form for you to copy and cut out the cards or in boxed set
versions. The following show you some of the available resources for this game.

The entire class can join in practicing skills in
math. You just hand out all 37 cards. (Some
players may get more than one card.) The student
whose card reads, "I have the first card. Who
has...?" begins. The student whose card has the
answer to that question responds and then asks a
different question. This continues until the person
with the last card gives the final answer and then
reads, "This is the end of the game!" Each box
provides 4 sets of cards for 4 different games.

Mixed Signs
Here is a simple game that gets children calculating using all four operations.
It is easy to organize and quick to learn but it challenges children as they compete to create
the equation with the highest value.
The game can be played with 2 or more players or with larger groups divided into teams. You
will require number cards with the digits from 0-9 and cards with the signs +, -, x, ÷. The
number of cards will depend on the number of players or teams.
To play the game, each player or team chooses 3 number cards and 2 cards with the
operation signs.
They then arrange the 5 cards to make an equation and calculate the answer to the equation.
They can move the cards around until they have created an equation with the largest answer.
When each player or team has their largest answer, the equations are checked and the player
or team with the largest answer is the winner.
Here is an example. If a player has chosen 2, 5, 9 and X and –, they could arrange the cards
to make the following equations –
2 X 9 – 5 (13)
9 X 5 – 2 (43)
5 X 2 – 9 (1)
A player should then choose the second equation to be their final one as it is largest.
Please note: Due to the standard order of operations rule for this set of cards the subtraction
sign could not be placed first without the answer being a negative number.
A game instruction card and game cards are provided in the Printables Section of this magazine.

Smath Game Here is a wonderful math game that is almost a math version of the game Scrabble.
Smath
Smath makes addition, subtraction, multiplication
and division more exciting than ever.
Players use number and symbol tiles to make math
equations crossword puzzle-style. Use the tiles in
your hand and the ones already on the board to
build your own new equations.

Wrap Ups
You can never have enough ways for children to practice multiplication. These wonderful tools
have been designed to give children a tactile way to do so. Not only can they practice
multiplication but there are also ones that practice addition, subtraction and fractions.

Math Chain
This game is a simple way for children to practice calculations or to practice place value. It isn’t
technically a game but children love the challenge of trying to keep up with the instructions and
getting the correct answer at the end.
Addition and Subtraction Math Chain
Challenge children to keep up with you as you give a start number and then give instructions to
add or subtract numbers. You can make the chain as long as you like, as easy or difficult as is
appropriate for the children and you can go as quickly or slowly as appropriate. Children can
calculate this mentally or use pen and paper to record an answer for each step of the chain.
When you have finished giving the instructions, children write down their answer. Next check
to see who has kept up with you and calculated correctly.
Here are a few examples of what you might say:
Start with 9.
Add 5.

The Math Chain can be made even more difficult by adding Multiply and Divide instructions in
the chain.
Place Value Math Chain
In this Math Chain, start with a 3, 4 or 5 digit number and have children add or take a given
number of ones, tens, hundreds (or thousands or ten thousands if using larger numbers).
Again the chain can be as long as you like, as easy or difficult as is appropriate for the children
and you can go as quickly or slowly as appropriate.
Let’s Make Math Fun www.makingmathmorefun.com www.math-board-games.com
For the Place Value Math Chain, children can calculate mentally, use pen and paper or use a
calculator. When you have finished giving the instructions, children write down their answer.
Next check to see who has kept up with you and calculated correctly.
Here are a few examples of what you might say:

Number Heads
Most of you will be familiar with the game Celebrity Heads. Well, with a few small changes this
game can be used to practice number skills.
Number Heads can be played in a similar way to the Celebrity Heads game where 3 players
attempt to name their celebrity.
For the number version, 3 players are chosen to stand with their backs to the wall or board
while they face the audience. Each player then has a number put up on the wall behind them
so that they can’t see the number. If you want to, you can have each player wear a hat and
then pin a number on a card onto their hat. Make sure that each player isn’t able to see their
own number. The number might be a single digit or a double digit.
The players now ask questions about their number. Each question can only have yes or no for
an answer, e.g. Is it an odd number? Is it larger than 50? Does it have 6 tens? If a player has
‘yes’ for an answer, the player continues to ask questions until the answer is ‘no’ and the next
player has a turn. The winner is the first person who can guess their number.

I Have… Who Has? Multiplication Cards
I Have… Who Has? Getting Ready:
Cut out the cards. This is ideally played with a group of 10 or more players.
Give a card to each player. If there are more cards than players, give some players 2 or more
cards.
To Play:
Choose a player to read their card. The player who has a card that has the correct answer
then stands and reads their card. For example, 1st player reads, ‘I have 36. Who has 5 x 8?’
The player who has a card starting with ‘I have 40 +’ will read their card next.
Play continues until the first player stands again to read their card.

Mixed Signs Instruction Card and Game Cards
Mixed Signs You Need: A set of cards with digits from 0 – 9.
At least 2 sets of cards with +, -, x, ÷ signs.
For more than 2 players you will need more than one set of number cards and operations
cards.
To Play:
The cards are spread out face down.
Each player or team selects 3 of the number cards and 2 of the operation sign cards.
Players or teams then arrange the cards to create an equation with the largest possible
answer.
The player or team who create the equation with the largest answer is the winner.
e.g. If a player has chosen 2, 5, 9 and X and –, they could arrange the cards to make the
following equations –
2 X 9 – 5 (13) 9 X 5 – 2 (43) 5 X 2 – 9 (1)

If a player lands on a space, the player picks up the top card, calculates the answer and moves forward that many spaces. The card is returned to the bottom of the pile.
Go back
to the start.
If a player lands on a space, EVERY player picks up a card and calculates the answer. The player with the largest answer moves forward that many spaces. The cards are returned to the bottom of the pile. If 2 or more players have the largest answer, e.g. 2 players have 6, then all players with this answer move that many spaces forward. The first player to get to the Finish is the winner.
