ਗੁਰ ਸਤਿਗਰੁ ਕਾ ਜੋ ਤਸਖੁ ਅਖਾਏ ਸੁ ਭਲਕੇ ਉਤਿ ਹਤਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਿਆਵੈ ॥ One who calls himself a Sikh of the Guru, the True Guru, shall rise in the early morning hours and meditate on the Lord's Name.

ਉਦਮੁ ਕਰੇ ਭਲਕੇ ਪਰਭਾਿੀ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਕਰੇ ਅੰਤਮਿਿ ਸਤਰ ਨਾਵੈ ॥ Upon arising early in the morning, he is to bathe, and cleanse himself in the pool of nectar.

ਉਪਦੇਤਸ ਗੁਰ ੂਹਤਰ ਹਤਰ ਜਪੁ ਜਾਪ ੈਸਤਭ ਤਕਲਤਵਖ ਪਾਪ ਦੋਖ ਲਤਹ ਜਾਵ ੈ॥

Following the Instructions of the Guru, he is to chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. All sins, misdeeds and negativity shall be erased.

ਤਿਤਰ ਚੜੈ ਤਦਵਸੁ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਗਾਵੈ ਬਹਤਦਆ ਉਿਤਦਆ ਹਤਰ ਨਾਮ ੁਤਿਆਵੈ ॥ Then, at the rising of the sun, he is to sing Gurbani; whether sitting down or standing up, he is to meditate on the Lord's Name.

ਜੋ ਸਾਤਸ ਤਗਰਾਤਸ ਤਿਆਏ ਮਰੇਾ ਹਤਰ ਹਤਰ ਸੋ ਗੁਰਤਸਖੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਤਨ ਭਾਵੈ ॥ One who meditates on my Lord, Har, Har, does Sasgras - that GurSikh becomes pleasing to the Guru's Mind.

ਤਜਸ ਨੋ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਮਰੇਾ ਸਆੁਮੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰਤਸਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਉਪਦਸੇੁ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ॥ That person, unto whom my Lord and Master is kind and compassionate - upon that GurSikh, the Guru's Teachings are bestowed.

ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਿੂਤੜ ਮੰਗੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰਤਸਖ ਕੀ ਜੋ ਆਤਪ ਜਪੈ ਅਵਰਹ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਵੈ ॥੨॥ Servant Nanak begs for the dust of the feet of that GurSikh, who himself chants the Naam, and inspires others to chant it. ||2||

The purpose of our life is to meet God

ਮਤਨ ਿਤਨ ਤਹਰਦੈ ਤਸਮਤਰ ਹਤਰ ਆਿ ਪਹਰ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥ Meditate in remembrance on the Lord in your mind, body and heart; twenty-four hours a day, sing His Glorious Praises.

ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਿੁਮ ਗੁਰਤਸਖਹੁ ਸਚਾ ਇਹੈ ਸੁਆਉ ॥ Listen to these Teachings, O Sikhs of the Guru. This is the true purpose of life.

How do we meet God?

People make so many efforts

• Go to Religious places

• Fast

• Make sacrifices

• Cut them selves from society

• Ancestors

• Give money

• Pray

• Being Good

ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਗੁਰਤਸਖ ਤਨਿ ਸਭ ਕਰਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਭਾਵੈ ॥ Waaho! Waaho! Let all the GurSikhs continually praise Him. Waaho! Waaho! The Perfect Guru is pleased with His Praises.

ਦੁਖੁ ਕਲੇਸੁ ਨ ਭਉ ਤਬਆਪੈ ਗੁਰ ਮੰਿੁ ਤਹਰਦੈ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਕੋਤਿ ਜਿਨਾ ਕਤਰ ਰਹੇ ਗੁਰ ਤਬਨੁ ਿਤਰਓ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥੨॥ Suffering, agony and fear do not cling to one whose heart is filled with

the GurMantra. Trying millions of things, people have grown weary, but

without the Guru, none have been saved. ||2||

ਤਜਸੁ ਿੂੰ ਿੁਿਾ ਸੋ ਿੁਿੁ ਤਿਆਏ ॥ ਸਾਿ ਜਨਾ ਕਾ ਮੰਿੁ ਕਮਾਏ ॥ ਆਤਪ ਿਰੈ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਿਾਰੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਿਾਕ ਨ ਪਾਵਤਣਆ ॥੭॥

Those who are pleasing to You meditate on You. They practice the Mantra of the Holy. They themselves swim across, and they save all their ancestors and families as well. In the Court of the Lord, they meet with no obstruction. ||7||

ਗੁਰੁ ਮੰਿੁ ਤਦਿੜਾਏ ਹਤਰ ਰਸਤਕ ਰਸਾਏ ਹਤਰ ਅੰਤਮਿਿੁ ਹਤਰ ਮੁਤਖ ਚਇੋ ਜੀਉ ॥ The Guru implants His Mantra within the heart, and one savors the sublime essence of the Lord; the Ambrosial Nectar of the Lord trickles into his mouth.

What are you like without Gurmantra

ਗੁਰ ਮੰਿਿ ਹੀਣਸ੍੍ ਜੋ ਪਿਾਣੀ ਤਿਿਗੰਿ ਜਨਮ ਭਿਸਿਣਹ ॥ That mortal who lacks the Guru's Mantra - cursed and contaminated is his life.

ਕੂਕਰਹ ਸੂਕਰਹ ਗਰਿਭਹ ਕਾਕਹ ਸਰਪਨਹ ਿੁਤਲ ਖਲਹ ॥੩੩॥ That blockhead is just a dog, a pig, a donkey, a crow, a snake. ||33||

Sakat is a dog and a pig- Sakat chases after Maya.

ਸਾਕਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਉ ਬਹੁ ਿਾਵਤਹ ॥ The faithless cynics chase after Maya.

ਨਾਮੁ ਤਵਸਾਤਰ ਕਹਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਤਹ ॥ Forgetting the Naam, how can they find peace?

ਤਿਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਅੰਿਤਰ ਖਪਤਹ ਖਪਾਵਤਹ ਨਾਹੀ ਪਾਤਰ ਉਿਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥ In the three qualities, they are destroyed; they cannot cross over to the other side. ||14||

ਕੂਕਰ ਸੂਕਰ ਕਹੀਅਤਹ ਕੂਤੜਆਰਾ ॥ The false are called pigs and dogs.

ਭਉਤਕ ਮਰਤਹ ਭਉ ਭਉ ਭਉ ਹਾਰਾ ॥ They bark themselves to death; they bark and bark and howl in fear.

ਮਤਨ ਿਤਨ ਝੂਿੇ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਤਹ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਹਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥ False in mind and body, they practice falsehood; through their evil-mindedness, they lose out in the

Court of the Lord. ||15||

ਕਬੀਰ ਸਾਕਿ ਿੇ ਸੂਕਰ ਭਲਾ ਰਾਖੈ ਆਛਾ ਗਾਉ ॥ Kabeer, even a pig is better than the faithless cynic; at least the pig keeps the village clean.

ਉਹੁ ਸਾਕਿੁ ਬਪੁਰਾ ਮਤਰ ਗਇਆ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਲੈਹੈ ਨਾਉ ॥੧੪੩॥ When the wretched, faithless cynic dies, no one even mentions his name. ||143||

Sakat’s mind is made of five elements therefore is Greedy.

ਲਬੁ ਕੁਿਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਚੂਹੜਾ ਿਤਗ ਖਾਿਾ ਮੁਰਦਾਰੁ ॥ Greed is a dog; falsehood is a filthy street-sweeper. Cheating is eating a

rotting carcass.

ਤਬਨੁ ਤਸਮਰਨ ਜੈਸੇ ਸਰਪ ਆਰਜਾਰੀ ॥ Without meditating in remembrance on the Lord, one's life is like that of a snake.

ਤਿਉ ਜੀਵਤਹ ਸਾਕਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਬਸਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ This is how the faithless cynic lives, forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||

ਏਕ ਤਨਮਖ ਜੋ ਤਸਮਰਨ ਮਤਹ ਜੀਆ ॥ One who lives in meditative remembrance, even for an instant,

ਕੋਤਿ ਤਦਨਸ ਲਾਖ ਸਦਾ ਤਿਰੁ ਿੀਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ lives for hundreds of thousands and millions of days, and becomes stable forever. ||1||Pause||

ਤਬਨੁ ਤਸਮਰਨ ਤਿਿਗੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਾਸ ॥ Without meditating in remembrance on the Lord, one's actions and works are cursed.

ਕਾਗ ਬਿਨ ਤਬਸਿਾ ਮਤਹ ਵਾਸ ॥੨॥ Like the crow's beak, he dwells in manure. ||2||

ਤਜਨਾ ਅੰਦਤਰ ਕੂੜੁ ਵਰਿੈ ਸਚੁ ਨ ਭਾਵਈ ॥ Those who are permeated by falsehood, do not love the Truth.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਬੋਲੈ ਸਚੁ ਕੂੜਾ ਜਤਲ ਜਾਵਈ ॥ If someone speaks the Truth, falsehood is burnt away.

ਕੂਤੜਆਰੀ ਰਜੈ ਕੂਤੜ ਤਜਉ ਤਵਸਿਾ ਕਾਗੁ ਖਾਵਈ ॥ The false are satisfied by falsehood, like the crows who eat manure.

ਤਜਸੁ ਹਤਰ ਹੋਇ ਤਕਿਪਾਲੁ ਸੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਿਆਵਈ ॥ When the Lord grants His Grace, then one meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਹਤਰ ਗੁਰਮੁਤਖ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਰਾਤਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਪਾਪੁ ਲਤਹ ਜਾਵਈ ॥੧੦॥ As Gurmukh, worship the Lord's Name in adoration; fraud and sin shall disappear. ||10||

ਮਨਹੁ ਤਜ ਅੰਿੇ ਘੂਪ ਕਤਹਆ ਤਬਰਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ॥

Those who are totally blind in their minds, do not have the integrity to keep their word. ਮਤਨ ਅੰਿ ੈਊਂਿੈ ਕਵਲ ਤਦਸਤਨ ਖਰੇ ਕਰੂਪ ॥

With their blind minds, and their upside-down heart-lotus, they look totally ugly. ਇਤਕ ਕਤਹ ਜਾਣਤਨ ਕਤਹਆ ਬੁਝਤਨ ਿੇ ਨਰ ਸੁਘੜ ਸਰੂਪ ॥

Some know how to speak and understand what they are told. Those people are wise and good-looking. ਇਕਨਾ ਨਾਦ ੁਨ ਬੇਦ ੁਨ ਗੀਅ ਰਸੁ ਰਸ ੁਕਸੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੰਤਿ ॥

Some do not know the Sound-current of the Naad, spiritual wisdom or the joy of song. They do not even understand good and bad. ਇਕਨਾ ਤਸਤਿ ਨ ਬੁਤਿ ਨ ਅਕਤਲ ਸਰ ਅਖਰ ਕਾ ਭੇਉ ਨ ਲਹੰਤਿ ॥

Some have no idea of perfection, wisdom or understanding; they know nothing about the mystery of the Word. ਨਾਨਕ ਿ ੇਨਰ ਅਸਤਲ ਖਰ ਤਜ ਤਬਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਗਰਬੁ ਕਰੰਿ ॥੧੫॥

O Nanak, those people are really donkeys; they have no virtue or merit, but still, they are very proud.

Do you understand your purpose or not?

ਮਨਹੁ ਤਜ ਅੰਿ ੇਕੂਪ ਕਤਹਆ ਤਬਰਦ ੁਨ ਜਾਣਨ੍ਹੀ ॥

Those mortals whose minds are like deep dark pits do not understand the purpose of life, even when it is explained to them. ਮਤਨ ਅੰਿ ੈਊਂਿੈ ਕਵਤਲ ਤਦਸਤਨਹ੍ ਖਰੇ ਕਰੂਪ ॥

Their minds are blind, and their heart-lotuses are upside-down; they look totally ugly. ਇਤਕ ਕਤਹ ਜਾਣਤਹ ਕਤਹਆ ਬੁਝਤਹ ਿੇ ਨਰ ਸੁਘੜ ਸਰੂਪ ॥

Some know how to speak, and understand what they are told. They are wise and beautiful. ਇਕਨਾ ਨਾਦ ਨ ਬੇਦ ਨ ਗੀਅ ਰਸੁ ਰਸ ਕਸ ਨ ਜਾਣੰਤਿ ॥

Some do not understand about the Sound-current of the Naad or the Vedas, music, virtue or vice. ਇਕਨਾ ਸੁਤਿ ਨ ਬੁਤਿ ਨ ਅਕਤਲ ਸਰ ਅਖਰ ਕਾ ਭੇਉ ਨ ਲਹੰਤਿ ॥

Some are not blessed with understanding, intelligence, or sublime intellect; they do not grasp the mystery of God's Word. ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਨਰ ਅਸਤਲ ਖਰ ਤਜ ਤਬਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਗਰਬੁ ਕਰੰਤਿ ॥੨॥

O Nanak, they are donkeys; they are very proud of themselves, but they have no virtues at all. ||2||
