The purpose of your life is to meet God.

You spend your wealth on what you love.

Your whole life is dictated by where you spend your breath.

ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਅਮਲੀ ਹੂਆ ॥ Some pass their lives getting drunk.

ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਪਰ ਦਰਿ ਚ ਰਾਏ ॥ Some pass their lives stealing the property of others.

ਹਬਰ ਜਨ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਆਏ ॥੩॥ The humble servants of the Lord pass their lives meditating on the Naam. ||3||

ਕੂਪੁ ਭਬਰਓ ਜੈਸੇ ਦਾਬਦਰਾ ਕਛੁ ਦੇਸੁ ਬਿਦੇਸੁ ਨ ਿੂਝ ॥ The frog in the deep well knows nothing of its own country or other lands;

ਐਸੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਬਿਬਿਆ ਬਿਮੋਬਹਆ ਕਛੁ ਆਰਾ ਪਾਰੁ ਨ ਸੂਝ ॥੧॥ just so, my mind, infatuated with corruption, understands nothing about this world or the next. ||1||

Is God inside you or outside you?

ਤੁਝਬਹ ਸੁਝੰਤਾ ਕਛੂ ਨਾਬਹ ॥ You know nothing.

ਪਬਹਰਾਵਾ ਦੇਿੇ ਊਬਭ ਜਾਬਹ ॥ Seeing your clothes, you are so proud of yourself.

ਗਰਿਵਤੀ ਕਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਠਾਉ ॥ The proud bride shall not find a place with the Lord.

ਤੇਰੀ ਗਰਦਬਨ ਊਪਬਰ ਲਵੈ ਕਾਉ ॥੧॥ Above your head, the crow of death is cawing. ||1||

We are blind to Truth.

We are blind to Truth because we live in a drunken stupor of ignorance.

We have to wake up ourselves to know who we are.

ਤੋਹੀ ਮੋਹੀ ਮੋਹੀ ਤੋਹੀ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਕੈਸਾ ॥

You are me, and I am You-what is the difference between us?

ਕਨਕ ਕਬਿਕ ਜਲ ਤਰੰਗ ਜੈਸਾ ॥੧॥

We are like gold and the bracelet, or water and the waves. ||1||

The company we keep is important.

ਬਜਹ ਘਬਰ ਕਥਾ ਹੋਤ ਹਬਰ ਸੰਤਨ ਇਕ ਬਨਮਿ ਨ ਕੀਨ੍ਹੋ ਮੈ ਫੇਰਾ ॥ That house, in which the Saints speak of the Lord - I have not visited it, even for an instant.

ਲੰਪਿ ਚੋਰ ਦੂਤ ਮਤਵਾਰੇ ਬਤਨ ਸੰਬਗ ਸਦਾ ਿਸੇਰਾ ॥੩॥ Drunkards, thieves, and evil-doers - I constantly dwell with them. ||3|

ਅਜਹੂ ਸਮਬਝ ਕਛੁ ਬਿਗਬਰਓ ਨਾਬਹਬਨ ਭਬਜ ਲੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੁਰਾਬਰ ॥ Understand this today - it is not yet too late! Chant and vibrate the Name of the Lord.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਨਜ ਮਤੁ ਸਾਿਨ ਕਉ ਭਾਬਿਓ ਤੋਬਹ ਪੁਕਾਬਰ ॥੨॥੮॥ Says Nanak, this is the subtle wisdom of the Holy Saints, which I proclaim out loud to you. ||2||8|

ਰੇ ਨਰ ਇਹ ਸਾਚੀ ਜੀਅ ਿਾਬਰ ॥ O man, grasp this Truth firmly in your mind. ਸਗਲ ਜਗਤੁ ਹੈ ਜੈਸ ੇਸੁਪਨਾ ਬਿਨਸਤ ਲਗਤ ਨ ਿਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ The whole world is just like a dream; it will pass away in an instant. ||1||Pause|| ਿਾਰੂ ਭੀਬਤ ਿਨਾਈ ਰਬਚ ਪਬਚ ਰਹਤ ਨਹੀ ਬਦਨ ਚਾਬਰ ॥ Like a wall of sand, built up and plastered with great care, which does not last even a few days, ਤੈਸੇ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਸੁਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਉਰਬਝਓ ਕਹਾ ਗਵਾਰ ॥੧॥ just so are the pleasures of Maya. Why are you entangled in them, you ignorant fool? ||1||

ਨਉ ਘਰ ਦੇਬਿ ਜੁ ਕਾਮਬਨ ਭੂਲੀ ਿਸਤੁ ਅਨੂਪ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥ Seeing the nine openings of the body, the soul-bride is led astray; she does not obtain that incomparable thing.

ਕਬਹ ਕਿੀਰ ਬਜਸ ੁਉਦਰ ੁਬਤਸ ੁਮਾਇਆ ॥

Says Kabeer, whoever has a belly to fill, is under the spell of Maya.

Everyone is subject to Maya, so where do you put your trust?

ਰਾਮੁ ਗਇਓ ਰਾਵਨੁ ਗਇਓ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਿਹੁ ਪਰਵਾਰੁ ॥ Raam Chand passed away, as did Raawan, even though he had lots of relatives. ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਥਰੁ ਕਛੁ ਨਹੀ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਬਜਉ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥੫੦॥ Says Nanak, nothing lasts forever; the world is like a dream. ||50|| ਬਚੰਤਾ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕੀਜੀਐ ਜ ੋਅਨਹੋਨੀ ਹੋਇ ॥ People become anxious, when something unexpected happens. ਇਹੁ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਕੋ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਥਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥੫੧॥ This is the way of the world, O Nanak; nothing is stable or permanent. ||51|| ਜੋ ਉਪਬਜਓ ਸ ੋਬਿਨਬਸ ਹੈ ਪਰੋ ਆਜ ੁਕੈ ਕਾਬਲ ॥ Whatever has been created shall be destroyed; everyone shall perish, today or tomorrow. ਨਾਨਕ ਹਬਰ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ਲੇ ਛਾਬਿ ਸਗਲ ਜੰਜਾਲ ॥੫੨॥ O Nanak, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and give up all other entanglements. ||52||

Money?

ਏਕੈ ਸਰਮੁ ਕਬਰ ਗਾਿੀ ਗਿਹੈ ॥ Some collect wealth, and bury it in the ground. ਏਕਬਹ ਸਪੁਨੈ ਦਾਮੁ ਨ ਛਿਹੈ ॥ Some cannot abandon wealth, even in their dreams. ਰਾਜੁ ਕਮਾਇ ਕਰੀ ਬਜਬਨ ਥਲੈੀ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਸੰਬਗ ਨ ਚੰਚਬਲ ਚਲੀਆ ॥੨॥ The king exercises his power, and fills his money-bags, but this fickle companion will not go along with him. ||2|| ਏਕਬਹ ਪਰਾਣ ਬਪੰਿ ਤੇ ਬਪਆਰੀ ॥ Some love this wealth even more than their body and breath of life. ਏਕ ਸੰਚੀ ਤਬਜ ਿਾਪ ਮਹਤਾਰੀ ॥ Some collect it, forsaking their fathers and mothers. ਸੁਤ ਮੀਤ ਭਰਾਤ ਤੇ ਗੁਹਜੀ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਬਨਕਬਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਿਲੀਆ ॥੩॥ Some hide it from their children, friends and siblings, but it will not remain with them. ||3||

ਜਬਗ ਜੀਵਨੁ ਐਸਾ ਸਪੁਨੇ ਜੈਸਾ ਜੀਵਨੁ ਸੁਪਨ ਸਮਾਨੰ ॥ The life of the world is only a dream; life is just a dream. ਸਾਚੁ ਕਬਰ ਹਮ ਗਾਬਠ ਦੀਨੀ ਛੋਬਿ ਪਰਮ ਬਨਿਾਨੰ ॥੧॥ Believing it to be true, I grasped at it, and abandoned the supreme treasure. ||1|| ਿਾਿਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਹੋ ਬਹਤ ੁਕੀਨ੍ਹ ॥ O Father, I have enshrined love and affection for Maya, ਬਜਬਨ ਬਗਆਨੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਬਹਬਰ ਲੀਨ੍ਹ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ which has taken the jewel of spiritual wisdom away from me. ||1||Pause|| ਨੈਨ ਦੇਬਿ ਪਤੰਗੁ ਉਰਝੈ ਪਸੁ ਨ ਦਿੇੈ ਆਬਗ ॥ The moth sees with its eyes, but it still becomes entangled; the insect does not see the fire. ਕਾਲ ਫਾਸ ਨ ਮੁਗਿੁ ਚੇਤੈ ਕਬਨਕ ਕਾਬਮਬਨ ਲਾਬਗ ॥੨॥ Attached to gold and woman, the fool does not think of the noose of Death. ||2|

You will die one day. Wake up before it is too late.

ਚੰਚਲੁ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਹੀ ਉਰਝਾਇਓ ॥ His fickle mind is entangled in a dream.

ਇਤਨੀ ਨ ਿੂਝੈ ਕਿਹੂ ਚਲਨਾ ਬਿਕਲ ਭਇਓ ਸੰਬਗ ਮਾਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ He does not even understand this much, that someday he shall have to depart; he has gone crazy with Maya. ||1||Pause|

ਸੁਤੜੇ ਅਸੰਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਝੂਠੀ ਕਾਰਣੇ ॥ Millions are asleep, in the false illusion of Maya.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਜਾਗੰਬਨ੍ਹ ਬਜ ਰਸਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਚਾਰਣੇ ॥੧੩॥ O Nanak, they alone are awake and aware, who chant the Naam with their tongues. ||13||
