WELCOME
The “Art Is Ageless”™ Contest and Exhibit showcases the artistic
talents of older Texans from LeadingAge Texas communities
across the state. The exhibit and awards ceremony, along with
the LeadingAge Texas Annual Meeting and Trade Show, take place
annually in May, which has been designated as Older Americans
Month since 1963.
2014 marks the 24th year of LeadingAge Texas’ “Art Is Ageless”
program which features some of the most impressive works of art
to date. The place winners and finalists were selected from over
200 entries in Visual Arts and 40 entries in Writing and the new
Music category. The judges, comprised of artists, authors, and
other experts in their respective fields, praised the broad array
of talent displayed by this year’s participants and expressed their
admiration for the creativity and obvious dedication demonstrated
by each of the entries.
LeadingAge Texas believes that this contest is one of the most
effective tools we possess to highlight the positive aspects of the
aging process. It provides the public with a unique opportunity
to recognize the value of sustaining passion, inspiration, and
originality throughout one’s life. Whether one is continuing a
lifelong hobby or developing a new pursuit late in life, this contest
and exhibit prove that “Art Is Ageless.”

Jade is a disciple of the fabric weaving technique developed by Helen Baines;
she has been doing this type of jewelry work for 20 years. Born in New York
City, Jade graduated from New Mexico State University. With her husband of

Her mother taught her how to knit when she was 17, prior to her leaving for Middle Tennessee State Teachers College in Murfreesboro, where she earned her bachelor’s degree and teaching certificate. Evelyn married in 1939, and while raising four children, she taught high school chemistry in Memphis, Houston, and Richardson. In her spare time, she cooked, baked, knitted, sewed, and quilted. Upon retirement, Evelyn returned to Tennessee and shared her many interests with Coffee County residents.
Evelyn purchased the blue-green wool yarn in Bergen, Norway during her trip to Europe in 1990. Using a pattern sent to her by her daughter, Susan, “Norwegian Wool Sweater” emerged. Knitting and the creation of this piece fit neatly into Evelyn’s approach to life: “Something to do. I don’t want to do nothing!”
SECOND PLACE KAREN MCDONALD“Fairy”
Age upon completion: 66
Community: Air Force Villages - San Antonio
Karen McDonald has loved art and drawing from a very young age. Her introduction to needle felting came in 2012 when her aunt gave her a special
needle for felting. Having taken art classes in high school, and then attending an art school in Denver, Colorado has helped define her work today. Raising two children and operating a children’s book store for many years kept her from really honing any talent in the art field. Now, with the joy of living at a retirement village, she has time to enjoy her craft and loves the creativity of it. Karen’s “Fairy” was inspired by her desire to incorporate feathers into the project, her love of the
whimsy of nature, and the aspiration to create the look of movement.

THIRD PLACE SHELDON G. LLOYD“Path to the Sea”
Age upon completion: 79
Community: Westminster - Austin
Sheldon Lloyd was born and raised near Sac City, Iowa and attended Iowa State University receiving a degree in Mechanical Engineering. During his career,
he received seven patents, served as VP of Technology for a fortune 500-sized company, started two small engineering corporations, and obtained a private pilot’s license. He married and the couple raised two sons, one now deceased.
Photography has been Sheldon’s major hobby since grade school, when the family bathroom served as a dark room. He and his wife, Ruby, have traveled extensively, and he has enjoyed photographing scenes from around the world. “Path to the Sea” was photographed at the entrance to the WWII Memorial Cemetery in Normandy, France, a place he describes as “poignant and inspiring beyond words or pictures, but an artist must try.” This, he says, was his best effort.
SECOND PLACE BOB BAILEY“At The Wailing Wall”
Age upon completion: 66
Community: Querencia at Barton Creek - Austin
Bob Bailey and his wife, Marcia, have three children, eight grandchildren - two in active military service and another a retired, decorated, injured Iraqi veteran. Bob
is an eleventh generation descendant of a family arriving on the Mayflower, and a fifth generation Texan. An all-conference athlete as well as a graduate and former board member of Abilene Christian University, Bob has retired from a career as a Texas highway bridge contractor, when he built bridges and overpasses from Dallas to Pecos to Amarillo (surely you have crossed one of them).
Wherever Bob is in the world, his camera is not far behind - mostly photographing people. “At The Wailing Wall” was taken of a devoted, Hassidic Jew, deep in ritual prayer at the historic Western Wall in Jerusalem. This particular piece remains Bob’s favorite. Bob’s photography rules are simple: “give thought to where you want to stand and take several exposures. One is always better than the others.”

FIRST PLACE GORDON ALLDREDGE“Artist Self-Portrait”
Age upon completion: 81
Community: Air Force Villages - San Antonio
Gordon D. Alldredge started his interest in photography in 1947, as a high
school junior in West Texas, with a 35mm camera. Photography has
been a continuous prime hobby since then. After being commissioned as
a rated pilot in 1954, he continued with higher grade cameras taking aerial
shots of other airplanes in formations. After retiring in 1978, Gordon started a
new career in computer systems.
When digital cameras became available, he perfected digital techniques
with advanced cameras. He was a student in various art classes while at
the University of Texas, San Antonio and completed advanced photography
studies. His art work follows classical approaches to engineering lines,
lighting, angles, and attention to detail. Gordon wants the viewer of his piece,
“Artist Self Portrait,” to question the intent of the photograph.

Community: Morningside Ministries at The Meadows - San Antonio
Shirley was born in Seattle, Washington in 1925. At an early age, she was charmed by coloring books, but admits that drawing faces was most fun. In 1954, when Shirley
was a young missionary wife living in South Korea, she and her husband were invited to dinner with Dr. Helen Kim, President of Ewha Womans University. Dr. Kim saw Shirley admiring her parents’ portraits and arranged for Shirley to study with Dr. Kim In Soong, Dean of the Fine Arts College. Of that time in her life, Shirley explains, “that six months with Korea’s finest portrait artist opened my eyes and heart to capturing people on canvas in oil.”
It took Shirley two months to bring her friend Ralph, with his strong-lined face, to life on the canvas to create “All Weather Cowboy.” She explains that “catching a person through their eyes is my greatest challenge and accomplishment.” According to Shirley, Ralph’s deep faith and ready smile have blessed many folks at Morningside Ministries at The Meadows.

thought of enrolling in the class again after six or eight “keepers” later, and

My favorite subjects to paint were peaches, black raspberries, violets, birds, Christmas items, sets of dishes with varied fruits and varied flowers for family gifts and church bazaars.
