COCKSCOMB BASIN JAGUAR PRESERVE JUNGLE TOUR (Offering Day & Night Tours)
Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary/Jaguar Preserve Day Tour Take a 45 minute drive to the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, the world’s only jaguar preserve. On the way we make two stops; the first is at a banana plantation where you will learn about the growth and history of bananas in Belize. The second stop is at ‘Maya Centre’ where you will sign in and can buy local arts and crafts, before driving another 15 minutes to the entrance of the park itself. The first part of this tour is a natural history hike, where your knowledgeable guide will teach you about the history of the area, medicinal plants, trees, birds and animals. There are 5 species of wild cats, including Jaguar and Puma and about 300 species of birds including 3 species of toucans, trogons and Jacamars. The keel-billed toucan is the national bird of Belize, and frequently spotted on this hike. Listen out for the howler monkeys too that live in these trees. After a delicious local lunch (provided), there is time to change for the afternoon activities. Firstly, we collect inner tubes from the park rangers and take a 25 minute hike to the South Stann Creek River. River tubing lasts anywhere from half an hour to 1.5 hours, depending on recent rainfall. After exiting, we leave the inner tubes and take another 25 minute hike to a beautiful waterfall. There you can swim at your leisure, before embarking on the most exciting part of the day – a series of natural water/rock slides! In other words, sliding on moss-covered rocks into big pools of water! Fear not, your expert guide is always on hand giving step-by-step instructions. This exhilarating part of the tour is optional, but is A LOT OF FUN… and will certainly be the highlight of your day! Departs: 8 a.m. Returns: 5 p.m. Price: US$90 per person. What to bring: Swimwear, towel, sun block, insect repellent, regular and/or water proof camera, pocket money and a bottle of water. For the river activities you will need shoes you don’t mind getting wet (Tevas, Keens, running shoes etc., but NOT flip-flops) and a change of clothes, including swim shorts (especially women).

∆ Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary/Jaguar Preserve Night Tour After a 45 minute drive to the wildlife sanctuary, headlights are distributed to each person and a thorough briefing will be given. The first hike lasts about 2 hours; there is a chance to see numerous species of mammals, including 5 species of wild cats, howler monkeys, agoutis, pacas, armadillos, tapirs, kinkajous, red-brocket deer, peccaries, river otters and the four-eyed opossum. There are also nocturnal birds such as the common paraques and boat-billed herons. Amphibians such as red-eyed tree frogs and other species of frogs and toads as well as snakes and the morlet’s crocodiles are also prevalent in this area. After a short break, we then take a second hike for about an hour. The key to seeing wildlife is being quiet and being in the right place at the right time. Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, but remember, many jungle creatures are nocturnal and only come out at night!! Departs: 6 p.m. Returns: 12 p.m. or 1 a.m. Price: US$80 per person. What to bring: Hiking boots, long pants, insect repellent, a bottle of water. Headlights provided.
THE MAYA RUINS AT XUNANTUNICH
Take a beautiful drive right through the Maya mountains to the most easily accessible Maya city state in Belize. To reach the site takes about 2 ½ hours, but this is a great way to see the country, and admire the views along the famous ‘Hummingbird Highway’. Upon getting close to the site, we cross the Mopan River on a hand cranked ferry (if you are lucky, you may even get a chance to turn the wheel!) On arrival at the ruins, a knowledgeable site guide will give you a thorough history of the Maya people and will give you detailed descriptions as you walk through the site. The highlight of the trip is to climb the 40 m / 120 ft high ‘El Castillo’ building, which offers spectacular 360o views over the forest treetops of western Belize and into Guatemala. After lunch we start the journey back. About 45 minutes into the drive, we make a stop at the Blue Hole National Park for a refreshing dip in the blue waters of this natural sink hole in the middle of the jungle. Then it is homeward bound. Departs: 7 a.m. Returns: 5 p.m. Price: US$ 125 per person. What to bring: Light hiking shoe, swimwear, towel, insect repellent, a bottle of water, camera and pocket money.
9
∆ SOUTHERN MAYA RUINS AND IXCACAO CHOCOLATE FACTORY
Take a 1 ½ hour drive to the Maya ceremonial site of Nim Li Punit (“Big Hat”) for sightseeing and pictures. Next stop is lunch at a local restaurant and then we visit the Maya ceremonial site of Lubaantun (“Place of the Fallen Stones”), famous for the unearthing of the Crystal Skull in 1926. A knowledgeable site guide will give you a detailed tour through the area; you will learn about the people, their culture and the history of the site. This lasts about an hour. A drive of about half an hour takes us to the Maya owned Ixcacao chocolate factory. We get to sample locally made sugar, liquid and solid chocolate and yes, you get to make our very own chocolate the way the Mayas made it! We spend about an hour there and then head home. An optional extra is a visit to a spice farm. Started in 1990, the farm produces a wide range of spices and is now the country’s leading producer of black pepper and vanilla. Departs: 7 a.m. Returns: 5p.m. Price: US$125 per person. US$10 extra for spice farm visit. What to bring: Shorts, insect repellent, a bottle of water, camera and pocket money.
