Executive Director

Position Announcement & Job Description

The Arts Council of Kern—in partnership with the California Arts

Council, the County of Kern, and local agencies—provides, supports,and promotes arts access, advocacy, and education for all residents

and visitors to Kern County.

The Executive Director of the Arts Council of Kern (ACK) isresponsible for planning, organizing and directing the activities of the

Council. The rich and diverse Kern County arts environment isgrowing rapidly, and in order to meet the needs and challenges, ACK 

is committed to ensuring that the cultural arts are actively positionedand professionally represented with dedication and expertise. In

partnership with the California Arts Council since 1983, ACK servesas the countywide coordinating agency for cultural arts information,

programs, services, technical assistance and communication.

The Executive Director’s primary responsibilities are to develop andmanage community arts programs, staff and volunteers; secure grants

and other funding, prepare and monitor budgets, increase membershipand act as an advocate for the arts in the community. The Director 

serves at the pleasure of the Board of Directors.

The Executive Director’s compensation will be commensurate withexperience. A benefits package is included.

Typical Tasks:

!  Overall administration of all ACK operations and services!  Management of ACK staff, consultants, contract employees

and volunteers!  Development of the ACK budget and operating within that

budget!  Administration of contracts, on behalf of the Board, with

individuals and agencies that receive ACK funding!  Leadership of program selection, direction and content in light

of community applicability and organization goals!  Implementation of approved programs

!  Fund Development – plan and produce fund raising programs

and events; develop funding strategy; search for funding

opportunities; write grants!  Public Relations –create, identify opportunities to enhance

ACK’s visibility, position and credibility within thecommunity; represent ACK with elected officials, ACK’s

constituencies and the broader community!  Board Relationship – maintain a strong relationship with the

Board Chairs and help them be effective; understand theBoard governance function and assists the Board; provide

information and prepare reports for the Board, meeting at leastmonthly with the President, Board and committees

Knowledge and Abilities

!  Knowledge of the functions of an arts council!  Knowledge of grant writing procedures

!  Ability to assess community needs, modify existing and develop new programs inresponse

!  Ability to develop a volunteer base and to coordinate volunteers in support of programs

!  Ability to conduct membership drives and fundraisers

!  Knowledge of budgetary concepts and the ability to prepare and manage budgets

!  Ability to motivate others, work collaboratively with others and be a part of the team!  Ability to prioritize and multitask working efficiently while wearing many hats

!  Ability to communicate effectively in both written and spoken word!  Someone who has a sense of humor and tends not to take things too seriously

Desirable Qualifications

!  Degree from an accredited 4-year college/university in nonprofit management,arts/business administration, public administration or arts field (such as music,

theater, dance, visual/digital arts).!  Minimum of five years’ experience in management of an arts organization, a local,

state or national arts agency, or as department head of music, visual arts or performing arts department in an accredited college or university. Additional

qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

!  Excellent written and oral communication skills.!  Leadership ability—self motivated.

!  Ability to work with state and local government and provide public testimony.!  Knowledgeable, passionate, and committed to the arts.

!  Budget development and management, fundraising and grant writing experience.!  Ability to form partnerships.

!  Organization and administrative skills.

!  Strategic planning and implementation experience.
