COURTESY IS ITS OWN REWARD So, it really is very simple… once you have stepped into the road, proceed with alacrity to the other side. This is not the time to saunter, dawdle, or lollygag about. There are cars waiting to go. Just because you, as the pedestrian, have the right away doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t respect the others using the roads. And while you are at it, give the nice people in the car a friendly wave.

Pedestrian Safety: Students promoted pedestrian

safety by designing safety messages and slogans on the

sidewalks, creating “Pop Up Crosswalks” with chalked in

areas they believe are safety concerns for students

during drop up and pick up times, and assisting students

in crossing safely in the crosswalk. As pedestrians,

children are at an even greater risk of injury or death

from traffic crashes due to their inability to judge

distance and speed, and lack of experience with traffic rules. (CDCP, 2016)

Mr. Wurtzer and Mr. MacPherson presented the Bicycle Technician Apprenticeship Program Certificate to Taynori Meeks, student trainee from Laurel Ruff Adult Workability Program, for completing 60 hours of training in the POWERBike Service and Repair Program under the tutelage of Mr. MacPherson. Taynori successfully demonstrated his ability to install, overhaul, and adjust derailleurs, brakes, hubs, headsets and bottom brackets, and true wheels.

IMMUNIZATIONS Current 6th graders need all immunizations for 7th grade GET THEM EARLY!

SCREEN TIME VS BOOK TIME

This year we took a large group of 6th grade students to Sly Park Environmental Education Center for the week of May 21-25. Will Rogers students joined students from Sacramento, Galt, and Oakland learning about the Sierra Nevada ecosystems, the Miwok & Nisenan peoples, human impact on the environment, and other fascinating t o p i c s . T h e y h e l p e d i n t h e k i t c h e n , p e r f o r m e d te r r i fic sk i t s , looked at the

s tars , bu i l t shelters, and

hiked and hiked some more. My favorite part is

when students confront their fears and climb the rock wall; everyone cheers and supports their friends! I love taking our students to Sly Park and getting to see them mature and grow as learners. Teacher Haley Zerr
