Woodside Middle School Newsletter Page 1
Principal’s Message
Each month, I post on social media the names of students who are winners of our
Student of the Month program. After making these posts, I have received several questions from parents regarding our Student of the Month process. A few of the questions:
· What does a student need to do to become a Student of the Month?
· How do you determine who gets to be Student of the Month?
· What does a Student of the Month receive if they are selected?
Each of these are great questions and made me aware I needed to spend time outlining the Student of the Month process to families. I hope to answer these questions in this month’s newsletter.
We have great kids walking the hallways of Woodside. We ask our students to follow the Eagle Way and SOAR by being Safe, Open-minded, Accountable and Respectful. Each month our teachers take time to acknowledge students that are continually modeling these behaviors. Teachers complete a Student of the Month nomination form, submit the form to me, and the front office sends a paper certificate home to families so parents are aware we appreciate the actions of their child. It is common for the Woodside front office to receive 40-50 nominations each month.
At the conclusion of the month, the 40-50 nominations are considered to be finalists for Student of the Month. The finalists are then broken into grade level lists and distributed to teachers. As a grade level team, teachers review the finalist list to determine those students who have consistently modeled SOAR behavior, and select two student representatives from each grade, for a total of 8 Students of the Month.
Montana Mike’s has been an amazing sponsor of our Student of the Month program for several years. They graciously allow Woodside to bring the monthly representatives to their restaurant for a free lunch. Our students enjoy the extended lunch hour with their fellow students and typically return to school with a full belly and an appreciation for what they have earned. The next time you visit Montana Mike’s, thank them for their continued support of Woodside students!
In closing, our Student of the Month program brings attention to students SOARing while at school. We have numerous students being nominated on a monthly basis and we are proud of all of them, as well as the finalists selected each month. The next time you receive a nomination form in the mail, consider this a big deal. The next time you see a Student of the Month finalist, thank them for modeling excellent behavior. Student of the Month is just ONE piece of ALL of us acknowledging and encouraging our students to be their best!

VFW Awards Prizes to Woodside Contest WinnersVFW 9662 Ladies Auxiliary Representative Elaine Podnar recently visited Woodside Middle School in the Saydel Community School District to award the winners of this year’s 5th Grade Elementary VFW Essay Contest. The students wrote essays on the topic of “What It Is and Why Do I Love the United States of America.” Pictured from left, front row: Taylor Frost who won second place and $15, Ian Templeton, who won first place and $20, and Elli Clinton, who won third place and $10. Pictured from left, back row; Fifth grade team teachers Jaime Griffin, Alex Carr, VFW Representative Elaine Podnar, and Teacher Marsha George.
In Eagle Time we spend time making connections with students by engaging them in meaningful discussions and activities. We check our grades and missing assignments on Mondays. We talk about ways we can be self-aware,
advocates, make good choices, and determined to strive for success. Also, we talk about different ways we learn, studying skills, and strategies for learning.
Some of the activities that we engage in are games, writing in our journals, sharing with partners, and decorating our door. We even did a food drive for Thanksgiving. The students loved the time when they had a thumb war and did arm wrestling. They loved it when they could beat their teacher at arm wrestling. Eagle Time has been a great time to get to know the students and for them to get to know each other.

Seventh graders
have been learning about identity in the Middle Ages. They started learning about Medieval times by reading some of The Canterbury Tales. They will continue to learn more about the Middle Ages with Castle Diary: The Journal of Tobias Burgess, a story about a boy who wants to become a knight, and The Midwife’s Apprentice, a story about a poor peasant girl with no home or family who is looking for her place in the world.

News From Woodside Band The Woodside band has had an eventful year. In October,
the 7th and 8th graders had a successful performance with the award-winning high school band at the last home football game of the season. Three of our students, Rayann Richards, John Wells, and Ozias Butler, were honored by being selected to perform with the SCIBA district honor band. 50 fifth graders started band this year, making up the largest group that Woodside has had in many years. Several band members also played holiday music in December for all the students at Woodside. See photo below.

Eighth Graders Explore Relative Motions of Earth Before winter break 8th graders finished their first grid; exploring the relative motions of the Earth, Moon, and Sun.
The lessons involved work with various types of models and the use of a lot of technology. Most students really appreciate this new grid method because they are able to work at their own pace and feel more connected to what they are supposed to be learning. For many, the highlight of this grid was in level four when they created videos of themselves using models to explain concepts they’d learned throughout the unit.
A small number of students worked so efficiently through the grid that they had an opportunity to advance to level five, where they could choose from a variety of project ideas. They presented things such as a detailed model spacecraft and research on what would happen if the moon disappeared.
Our grid for third quarter is on the topic of geology, where we will explore how Earth has changed over time and specifically how earthquakes and volcanoes play a role.
