Read the question carefully

• Read the question twice

• Make sure your answer is what the examiners want!

• Look at the number of marks for the question

• Have you written enough points for the marks?

• Does your answer need expanding?

Exam Tips

• Don’t use words such as ‘Google’ or ‘Word’, instead say ‘Search Engine’ or ‘Word Processor’

• This exam is about where you get information from – paper based as well as computer based

Paper based Information

• Reference books, Thesaurus, Encyclopedia

• Card Indexes, Dictionaries, Atlas

• Directories, Newspapers

Computer based Information

• USB Drives, CD-ROM, DVD-ROM

• Teletext & Ceefax, Viewdata

• Bulletin Boards, The Internet

• Intranets, The World Wide Web

• What hardware and software do you need to access the above?

Dewey Decimal System

• There are ten main divisions: 000, 100, 200, …., 800, 900

• These divisions are then split into sub-divisions e.g. 500 Natural Sciences & Mathematics divides into:

• 510 Mathematics• 520 Astronomy & Allied Sciences• 530 Physics• Etc

• If necessary these sub-classes can be further sub-divided e.g.

• 520 Astronomy & Allied Sciences• 523 Specific Celestial Bodes & Phenomena• 523.1 The Universe

• 523.2 Solar System

Keeping Information Secure

• Locks on computer room doors

• Access to computer room by swipe card

• Voice recognition or finger print comparison to enter room

• Use of ID Cards (with photographs)

• Locks on computers and/or keyboards

• Password protect files

• User rights – read only, read/write, no access

Searching for Information (paper)

• Use a list of contents

• Use a glossary

• Use an index

• Search catalogues

• Interpret information from graphs/charts

• Interpret information held in tables

Searching for Information (ICT)

• Use a search engine

• Use lower case letters NOT CAPITALS

• Use quotation marks to get more accurate results

• Ask direct questions

• Use operators (and, or, not, =, -)

Standard ways of working

• Proof-read your work

• Keep back-up copies on another disk or location

• Save your work regularly using different and appropriate filenames

• Keep information free from viruses

• Respect confidentiality
