ITGS Assessment (HL)• You will need to:– Analyse a problem faced by a real-life

client– Design and develop a complex IT solution

to solve that problem– Evaluate the solution in terms of the

client’s requirements


Your Client• Could be in-school or out-of-school• Must be a real person• Does not need to speak English• Must be available to work closely with you

(face-to-face discussion should be possible)• Be 18 or over• Cannot be me!


The Problem Must Be…• A genuine, significant, real life problem • Solvable using IT• Not already solved by IT


The Solution Must Be….• Create entirely by you• Based on researched, recognised good

practice in that area • Feasible (based on hardware and software

available to you and your client)• Complex (using advanced skills)• Not be based on a previous piece of work

you have created (e.g. IGCSE projects, other IB subjects, CAS activities)


Example Project Ideas (1/7)• The IB Diploma Programme theatre teacher

(client) requires a method of managing the finance and seat booking for a school theatre production (problem).

• A possible solution is to develop a multiple-page spreadsheet that links a diagrammatic representation of the seating plan with the financial information (solution)

Example Project Ideas (2/7)• The IB Primary Years Programme or

kindergarten teacher (client) requires a method to introduce the basic greetings in another language to 4-year-olds (problem).

• A possible solution is to develop a multimedia presentation that includes a series of sound and video clips. (solution)



Example Project Ideas (3/7)• A photographer (client) requires a method

of increasing his visibility and consequently his income from the sale of images (problem).

• A possible solution is to develop a website. (solution)



Example Project Ideas (4/7)• A manager of a local sports team (client)

requires a method of keeping accurate records of players’ details, attendance at training sessions and performance throughout the season (problem).

• A possible solution is to develop a relational database (solution)

A multi-language DTP brochure to help a clock company promote its products to a wider audience.

Caution!• Making a new website for a local business

(that already has a website)– This problem has been solved already!

• A promotional video for a local company– Possible: but do you have the hardware,

software, and skills to produce a professional video? Appropriate cameras, tripods, and microphones?


Caution!• Making a website about my favourite

computer games / hobby / TV show– No client: no real problem.

• “Making a website for…..”– The focus now should be on the client

and the problem, not the solution.


Next Steps• Complete the Project Initial Ideas document

with ideas for three possible situations and clients.

• Focus on problems, not on solutions at this stage .
