October 14, 1977, was the 60th b i r thday of one of the wel l -known phys ica l c h e m i s t s of the country, a spec ia l i s t in the f ield of physica l organic c h e m i s t r y , Doc tor of Chemical Sciences P r o f e s s o r I saak Pe t rov ich Grage rov .

I . P . Grage rov began his scient i f ic act iv i ty 35 y e a r s ago at Moscow State Univers i ty , and, s ince 1946, has worked in the L. V. P i s a r z h e v s k i i Ins t i tu te of Phys ica l C h e m i s t r y of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukra in ian SSR. His scientif ic inves t iga t ions e m b r a c e a wide range of quest ions in phys ica l organic chemis t ry , connected with the elucidat ion of the effect of the chemica l s t ruc tu re of mo lecu le s on the i r reac t iv i ty .

G r a g e r o v c rea ted a new isotopic m a s s - s p e c t r o m e t r i c method fo r inves t iga t ing the m e c h a n i s m o fhomoly t - ic r eac t ions , which has been used to study the s tages and the de ta i l s of the m e c h a n i s m of a l a rge number of convers ions of this type. On the bas i s of these r e su l t s , ru les fo r obtaining a number of compounds with s table i so topes have been developed and put into industr ia l p rac t i ce . To this cycle of work , t he re mus t be added the work of I. P . G r a g e r o v on the study of rapid protolyt ic r eac t ions and i n t e rmo lecu l a r in te rac t ions by the method of nuc lea r magne t ic r e sonance . In this f ield, fundamental ly new data on the effect of hydrogen bonds on the k ine t ics and the m e c h a n i s m of pro ton t r a n s f e r r eac t ions have been obtained and co r r e l a t ed .

He is developing chemica l appl icat ions of a new, recen t ly d i scovered method fo r the chemica l p o l a r i z a - t ion of nuclei; he has been the f i r s t to show how the chemica l po la r iza t ion of nuclei can be used to study the k ine t ics of complex react ions: consecut ive and chain. He has also opened up the use of the new effects of the chemica l po la r iza t ion of nuclei fo r study of the fine de ta i l s of the m e c h a n i s m of r ad ica l s .

The above-ment ioned work has made a g r e a t contr ibution to the pa r t i cu l a r ly t ime ly field of the inves t iga- t ion of the m e c h a n i s m of organic r eac t ions , and has jus t ly confe r red high author i ty on h im as one of the f o r e - m o s t spec ia l i s t s in th is field. He is the author of m o r e than 100 scientif ic works , widely known in our country and abroad.

I . P . G r a g e r o v is not only a g r e a t sc ien t i s t , but a lso a scient i f ic o rgan i ze r . He heads the divis ion of the m e c h a n i s m of homolyt ic r eac t ions of the L. V. P i s a r z h e v s k i i Inst i tute of Phys ica l C h e m i s t r y of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukra in ian SSR; he is a cor responding m e m b e r of the coordinat ing council on the p rob lem ~Chemica l s t ruc tu re and r eac t iv i ty n of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, and a m e m b e r of the edi tor ia l board of the journal T e o r e t i c h e s k a y a i ]~ksper imenta l 'naya Khimiya,

I . P . G r a g e r o v continually pays a g r ea t deal of at tention to the p repa ra t ion of scient i f ic c ad re s . Under his d i rec t ion , nine C a n d i d a t e t s D i s s e r t a t i o n s h a v e b e e n p r e p a r e d a n d success fu l lydefended . He is ac t ive ly en- gaged in the spread ing of scient i f ic knowledge in popular a r t i c l e s and l ec tu re s , as well as in popular scientif ic a r t i c l e s and b r o c h u r e s .
