Is time travel possible?

By Jake Mustain

What is time travel?

Time travel is the idea of going forward or backward through time. It's also about moving through space.

Time travel and its possibilities have been used in works of fiction since the 19th Century, including in books and films.

In real life, scientists have been trying to unravel the mysteries of time travel and and make it possible for humans.

Is time travel really possible?

One expert says that time travel into the future is not only possible, but that it has been done -- and that he and other experts have know about it for over a century.

The reason not many people know this is that the amount of travel is so small -- about 2 hundreths of a second.

Time distillation is how time travel is possible. Time passes more slowly the closer one approaches the speed of light. The hands of a clock in a speeding train move more slowly than those in the clock at the train station. If  a train could go 99.999 percent light speed, only 1 year would pass onboard for every 223 years back at the train station.

Is traveling back in time possible?

In physics, time is described as a dimension much like length, width, and height. When you travel from your house to the grocery store, you’re taking a direction in space that is similar to  length, width or height. But you’re also traveling forward in time -- the fourth dimension. Experts say this "bending of space-time" causes objects to move on a curved path that is known as gravity.

Many ideas about the possibilities of time travel have emerged. The most developed features a wormhole -- a tunnel linking  two regions of space-time. These regions could be two completely different areas of the same universe. Matter can travel through either mouth of the wormhole to reach a destination on the other side.

Time travel in films

Several films contain the idea of time travel as a plot device, including "Back to the Future." In that film, time is a consecutive line, and if you go to the past and change an event, then the future will be changed too.

What makes time travel work convincing to audiences of the film is a vehicle the characters use; its time displacement is powered by nuclear fission that uses plutionum as fuel, which generates 1.21 gigawarts of power into a device one character  calls the "flux compasstor".

What I think on time travel

I think time travel is possible now. It's just that we don't have the money and technolegy to make it possible, because you would need a vehicle to be able to go close to the speed of light and so far with today's technology that seems very unlikely.

You would also need an extreme amount of money to make all this technology possible and available to experts and scientists,  so I think it will be at least another 50 years before we can think about trying to become real time travelers.

Thank you for watching
