IPv6 Deployment: Business Cases

and Development Options IPv6 Forum Grenada

Brent Mc Intosh IPv6 Evangelist

Agenda

• What is IPv6? , I am sure we all know this by

now.

• The Problem and Positives.

• The Opportunity for deployment.

• Where are we now?

There are only this many IPv6 addresses left:

340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,548,011,352

Projected IPv6 Exhaustion Date: 5,395,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 AD

What is IPv6

• IPv6 is short for "Internet Protocol Version 6". IPv6 is the Internet's next-generation protocol, designed to replace the current Internet Protocol, IP Version 4.

• World IPv6 Day ( 0.60% of Internet Population)

• World IPv6 Launch ( 1.29% preferred IPv6)

Today we are well over 2% of Internet traffic being IPv6.

OK so what's the Problem? :

Only 4.3 Billion addresses?

IPv4 :Success and Failure

• 4.3 Billion addresses. 86% Usable

• IANA Unallocated Address Pool Exhaustion: 03-Feb-2011

• ARIN 0.68 /8s remaining

• LACNIC 0.21 /8s

• APNIC 0.82 /8s

• AFRINIC 3.0 /8s

• RIPE 0.97 /8s

• Reservation of either /10 or 2x /11s

• Minimum allocation /24 Max /24s

IPv6 Business Case: The Problem

• IPv4 Depletion/Exhaustion

• Routing Efficiency ( End-to-End IP Addressability)

• NAT is “Life Support” system for IPv4

• LSN/CGN/NAT444 ( not the best for some online

Applications)

• What’s Broken: Play station/Xbox, Hulu, sling catcher,

VoIP, ALG, SSL, encryption, bit torrent, LimeWire,

Tunneling and many others.

Business Case Drivers: Mobile

and NGN Services

• Smartphone Users Worldwide will Total 1.75 Billion in 2014

• ~ 4.55 billion people worldwide to use a mobile phone in 2014.

• 4G/LTE adoption and deployment in the Region

• Explosive Growth in Smartphone/Tablet market.

• IANA has exhausted their IPv4 Public Pool in 2011, last /8 was allocated to the RIRs.

• IOT

IPv6 Business Case: Drivers • Mobile Broadband 4G/LTE ( /64 GUA Per Handset)

• IOT/IOE ( more M2M connectivity)

• Increase demand for true End-to-End addressability ( No

NAT)

• Increase in End-User applications.

• Many large Hosting Providers, CDNs and ISPs are already

on IPv6 (http://www.worldipv6launch.org/participants/)

• Two-Thirds of the world still without Internet Access

• IPv6 Deployment is well on the way.

• Focus on SDN/NFV and other upcoming Data

center/Hosting technology.

IPv6 : OH MY What Space

We Have!!

IPv6 Deployment: The

Caribbean Situation

IPv6 Deployment: The Caribbean Situation : Based on Cisco 6labs

IPv6 Adoption Performance Indicators ( CISCO 6LABs)

• Overall deployment ratio: average of other metrics and is

used to measure the deployment of IPv6 in a scale between

0% (no IPv6 at all) and 100% (everything is IPv6)

(IPv6-enabled transit AS, IPv6 content and IPv6 users)

• Relative Deployment Index: compare countries to the

currently most advanced IPv6 deployment (which country is

graded 10). The color on the world map is based on this

index
