A word of wisdom:

Tell me, and I’ll forget,

Teach me, and I’ll remember,

Involve me, and I’ll learn.

(The authorship is attributed to everyone from Chinese thinkers to Benjamin Franklin)

What do you think?

Whose responsibility is it to engage students outside class time?

“It could be argued that although some of these challenges

are not the responsibility of the local educational institution,

they can have an impact on students’ academic success

and their enjoyment of the new environment. It is desirable

for educational institutions to provide not only learning

support to students, particularly international students, but

also an adequate level of personal support”(Sando & Seidel, 2007).

Brainstorm

Do our students do enough already to improve their language skills

after class?

What kind of activities do you think they do?

For which of these activities do they use English?

What proportion of time before or after class, in your opinion, do they

spend speaking English?
