• Meet new people

• Make a first impression

• Let people know your intentions

WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN IF A PERSON DOES NOT INTRODUCE THEMSELVES IN AN APPROPRIATE MANNER?

• Not get a job

• Miss an opportunity

• Make a bad/wrong first impression

HOW TO PROPERLY INTRODUCE YOURSELF• What do you think is the appropriate way to introduce yourself?

• Is there a difference between introducing yourself to a peer versus an adult?

• Let’s watch a quick video on how to properly introduce yourself:

LET’S REVIEW THE STEPS:

1. Choose the right time & place.

2. Be confident and secure

3. Make eye contact, SMILE , approach

4. Greet person & tell them your name. “Hi, my is ____________________”

5. If appropriate, give firm handshake

6. Ask for the other person’s name

7. Repeat their name, “It’s nice to meet you Mrs. _________”

8. Tell something about yourself or ask a question - something to help start a conversation.

9. After you’ve met someone, it is important to say, “It was nice to meet you, _______.”

Best to ask a question...people respond better talking about themselves. Kids might have to work up a few favorite questions...be prepared to have an icebreaker that fits the situation. Be prepared! Visualize yourself in the situation. Listen well and breathe.

BEFORE WE PRACTICE INTRODUCING OURSELVES,

LET’S UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF SHAKING HANDS

Where did handshaking originate from?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYCCec0FHZc&feature=related

What were some of the reasons shown in the video that people shake hands?

• make peace

• help someone

• congratulate someone

• seal a deal

• say hello

• say goodbye

• offer condolences

Remember, everything about you introduce yourself matters!

It’s true, you never get a second chance to make a

first impression.
