IntroductionKnowledgeofthereproductivebiologyoffishandcrabstocksiscriticaltostockassessmentestimatesofthereproductivepotential(typicallymeasuredasspawningstockbiomass)ofthestock.Reproductivepotentialisafactoroftenusedtocalculatebiologicalreferencepointsusedforfisheriesmanagement. Whilequantitativeassessmentofreproductiveparametersisessentialforstockassessmentcalculations,qualitativeinformationonspawningdynamicsisalsoimportantasfisheriesmanagementhasbeguntakinganecosystemapproachtomanagement.Inaddition,understandingthespatialandtemporaldynamicsoffishspawningisimportantformanagingfisheryimpactsonprotectedapexpredators.

MARVLS at the AFSCHow it all started…ReproductivestudiesattheNMFSAlaskaFisheriesScienceCenter(AFSC)havehistoricallybeenconductedasindependentstudies,meanttoinformparticularstockassessments.ItbecameapparentthattheAFSCwouldbenefitfromamoreintegratedapproachtocollectreproductivelifehistoryinformation.Thisapproachdemandedtheprioritizationoffutureresearchbyidentifyingknowledgegapsandmanagementchallenges.ThisledtotheformationoftheMaturityAssessment,andReproductiveVariabilityofLifeStages(MARVLS)workinggroupandresultedinareadinggroup,andanAFSCworkshopandwhitepaperdetailingthestatusofreproductivebiologyandmaturityresearchattheAFSC.
