WHAT IS COMMUNICATION?

Communication is a process of transferring information from one entity to another.

Communication processes are sign-mediated interactions between at least two agents which share a repertoire of signs and semiotic rules.

Communication is commonly defined as ‘’the imparting or interchange of thoughts, opinions, or information by speech , writing or signs .’’

TYPES OF COMMUNICATION

A. Intrapersonal communication

B. Interpersonal communication

C. Small-group communication

D. Public communication

DEFINITION OF INTRAPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

Intrapersonal communication is language use or thought internal to the communicator.

Intrapersonal communication is the active internal involvement of the individual in symbolic processing of messages.

BASIC MODEL OF INTRAPERSONAL COMMUNICATION .

INTRAPERSONAL COMMUNICATION ENCLOSES THE FOLLOWING FACTORS.,

Day-dreaming Nocturnal dreaming,including and especially lucid

dreaming Speaking aloud (talking to oneself),reading ,

repeating one hears and so on. Internal monologue Writing (by hand, or by a word processor and so

on ) Making gestures while thinking

Sense-making (interpreting maps, texts, signs, and symbols)

Interpreting non-verbal communication (gestures, eye contacts)

Communication between body parts ( ‘’My stomach is telling me its time for lunch .’’

Self-concept ( self-awareness, attitudes and beliefs)

Perception (understanding of one’s self and one’s world – yoga, meditation and so on )

Future oriented messages (long term roles, life scripts)

THE PROCESS OF INTRAPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

Intrapersonal starts with a stimulus , these which originate from ourselves or from an outside source, which is picked up by the sensory organs and sent to the brain. This process is called reception.

When the sense organs pick up a stimuli and send it to the central nervous system, we receive all stimuli directed to us, but we pay attention only to a few. This is because we practice selective perception. Example, high intensity sounds like, loud sounds, bright colors, sharp smell, etc., are perceived and the low intensity stimuli are overlooked.

The next step is processing of the stimuli. It occurs at three levels, they are , cognitive , emotional , and physiological.

a) Cognitive – Thinking , sorting and so on.b) Emotional – attitudes, beliefs and opinions.c) Physiological – bodily behaviors like heart rate,

brain activity, blood pressure and body

This model compares various aspects of open ( public ) and closed ( private ) communication relationships.

These sections vary according to our relationships with others.

This model can be effectively used to increase our self-awareness/self-concept, which is not inborn.

It develops as we grow through our communication with others and from our environment.

specifically, it develops from, 1) Our past experiences2) The reference groups we identify with and,3) The roles we play in our lives.
