International workshop

on black sigatoka control

and sustainable production

of banana in the Caribbean

Background

Bananas: the world’s top fruit crop

The banana is the world’s top fruit crop. It plays a vital role in national economies and in

food security. The Caribbean region is a major banana producer, with 2.8% of world

production and 4.7% of world exports. In the French Antilles, banana production is the chief

agricultural activity. It is also the largest private employer with 0.8 MWU (Man Work Unit)

per hectare and more than 6,000 direct employees.

The threat of black Sigatoka

However, banana production in the entire Caribbean region is under threat from the

emergence of serious diseases, particularly Black Leaf Streak (BLSD), also known as black

Sigatoka. The appearance of this fungal disease has already significantly reduced production

for export in the islands of St. Lucia and St. Vincent. A similar scenario is likely in recently

infected islands including the French West Indies and Dominica, if effective control of the

disease is not swiftly implemented.

Controlling Sigatoka

Management of Sigatoka currently consists of regular applications of fungicides and

biological warning systems, combined with cropping practices such as the removal of

diseased leaves. The future use of Sigatoka-tolerant varieties will complement this control

strategy, in addition to being more sustainable and environmentally friendly. This will apply

to all types of banana production, both for export and local markets.

Ongoing research

Much research is currently being carried out, particularly by CIRAD, to develop or improve

methods of controlling Sigatoka. This research requires numerous skills and complementary

techniques in epidemiology, breeding for BLSD resistance, and agroecology. This research

has already enabled farmers to drastically reduce their use of chemical treatments and has

made possible the development of sustainable farming systems.

Objective of the seminar

Faced with the socio-economic impact of the crisis caused by the spread of BLSD in the

Caribbean, region-wide coordinated mobilization is essential to optimize and hasten the

development of effective and sustainable control methods. This mobilization began in 2006

with a workshop organized by CIRAD which gave birth to two projects: Cabaré and Banane

Durable Caraïbe. A new phase in sharing Sigatoka research results was reached at a seminar

organized last March in Havana by the Cirad, UGPBAN, IT² and their Cuban partners. In a

similar vein, another seminar will be held in Guadeloupe on the initiative of CIRAD, UGPBAN

and IT² from June 25 to 27.

These seminars facilitate sharing of research results and aim to set up a regional platform for

research and experimentation in plant health, particularly emerging banana diseases.

The seminars have received financial support from the European Interreg IV Programme,

through the Interreg Cabaré and Banane Durable Caraïbe projects.

tackle international agricultural and development issues.

Programmes involved

Interreg

Interreg is a European program promoting regional cooperation in the Greater Caribbean,

from Mexico to northern South America. The primary purpose of Interreg is to better

integrate the French Departments of America in their natural geographical space. Interreg

Caribbean finances projects such as Banane Durable Caraïbe and Cabaré.

More details: http://www.interreg-caraibes.org/

Interreg Cabaré

The Cabaré project (2011-2015) aims to create a network of scientific and technical partners,

working for sustainable control of viral and fungal diseases of bananas in the Caribbean.

CIRAD is coordinating this project which funded by the Interreg IV Caribbean, in partnership

with three Cuban research institutes and one Dominican Institute. Scientists model the

dispersion of diseases, estimate the health risks associated with the use of new BLSD-

resistant banana hybrids and implement technical procedures for their deployment.

Interreg Banane Durable Caraïbe

Established and funded through the Interreg IV Programme, the Banane Durable Caraïbe

project (2010-2013) aims to disseminate technical innovations to producers throughout the

Caribbean. These innovations will improve the sustainability of banana cropping systems and

reduce environmental impacts.

The Plan Banane Durable

The Plan Banane Durable (Sustainable Banana Plan) was signed in 2008 by the Guadeloupe &

Martinique Banana producers’ group, the Ministry of Agriculture and local authorities. The

producers’ group wishes to ensure sustainable social, economic and environmental

production. CIRAD has joined forces with IT² to develop and evaluate innovative and efficient

cropping systems.
