Student Testimonials“The caring, dedicated teachers at AHOT have helped me realize my potential.

Participating in events like the Lodging Management Competition, the American

“My internship enhanced my professional as well as my personal development.

I found a mentor in each and everyone in the National Academy Foundation

office. It was, for me, the best experience of my life.”

“ I have done two internships, one at the Marriott Marquis Hotel and the other at

Africa Travel Association. Both internships helped me to become a more

mature, independent young woman. These experiences opened my eyes to the

world of hospitality and tourism. More importantly, they increased my

awareness of the professional world and for that I am forever grateful to NAF,

to my employers, and to my school.”

“My experience at AOHT has been phenomenal. AOHT prepares its

students for the business world by exposing us to relevant courses and

activities, job shadowing, and internships that provide workforce readiness

and opportunities for entrepreneurship. I am grateful for the privilege to

attend this school and have so many opportunities.”

“The Academy of Hospitality and Tourism has taken me on a path that I never

saw myself on. It gives me opportunities that many high school students do not

have. I never saw myself having a paid internship in the 10th Grade nor being

on television because of my school. As a freshman, I appeared on television

and, last summer, I had an awesome paid internship with the Society for

Accessible Travel & Hospitality (SATH).

Employer TestimonialHi Janessa

I wanted to thank you for meeting me last week and taking the time out to get to know a bit about me and Linger Café & Lounge.  I was pleased to meet such a promising young person and am very impressed and how polished and motivated you are.  I also think it’s fantastic that you are going after a career that you are passionate about.  I cannot express to you how invaluable that is even decades from now, let alone for someone in high school.

I am thrilled to offer you an internship position at Linger Café & Lounge.  I think you are bright, energetic, and extroverted, factors that I think make you a great fit for the role and for what I’m looking for in my team.  I also wanted to commend you on your interview skills – you’re a great listener, and get major points for being comfortable and interjecting often with questions and comments.

Kind Regards,

Jessica

How can you integrate internship preparation

throughout your school?

2009 Institute for Staff Development

Students Today, Leaders Tomorrow

What are local non-profit organizations with which you can partner?

• Police Athletic League

If a national/international non-profit does not have a local branch, can you get them to establish one?

• Junior Achievement• Kiwanis/ Key International • Lions / Leo Club International• Toastmasters International

2009 Institute for Staff Development

Students Today, Leaders Tomorrow

What are local businesses with whom you can partner?

Consider:• Who is the biggest employer in your community?• What new businesses are emerging? • How can you “sell” the idea that prepared employees will benefit

employers?• Can your advisory board help to create job shadowing opportunities for

students?• Can your advisory board recruit professionals to visit your school?

2009 Institute for Staff Development

Students Today, Leaders Tomorrow

How can you get students to recognize the need for internship preparation?

• Get human resources and recruiting managers to visit your school• Use professional training videos• Use job posting advertisements from print and electronic media• Use career preparation curriculum like Newsday’s Dream Job• Have students visit someone working their “dream job”• Connect students to professional mentors
