InstallationGetting StartedThesheetmetalsidesandtopareeasilyremovedtoreducethechanceofdentsand/orscratchesinthefinish.Simplyliftthetopoff,andthatwillallowthesidestobepulledawayandup,forremoval.Tore-install,slidethechannel,atthebottomofeachsidepiece,overthelipatthebottomoftheboiler,andholddownwardwhilemovingthesidepanelintoplace.Thenslidethetopdownoverthesides.NOTE: The sheet metal top holds the sides in place, thus, no bolts or screws are needed.
Locating BoilerPlacetheboilerasclosetothechimneyaspossible,whilestillmaintainingtheabovementionedclearances.Bolttheshakerhandleontotheblockonthesideoftheboiler,usingthe(2)5/16X3/4in.boltsandlock-washers.AssemblyInstalltheTemperature/PressureGaugeintothepipestubin thecenterof the roundplateon the frontof theboiler(Fig.1)Installthea350sensorwireallthewayintotheimmersionwellandscrewthewellintooneofthetopholeTurn thepressure relief valve into the stubon topof theboiler,nexttothesupplyoutletfitting.NOTE: Use Teflon tape to seal the threads on all fittings. Any unused fittings must be pluggedBoltthetwomanualdraftcontrolsthroughtheholesinthetop loaddoor. (Fig.2)Thedraftcontrolknobshouldspinfreelyandopentoadistanceofapproximately3/8in.fromthedoorsurface,whilebeingabletocloseagainstthedoorsurface.

Bolt theautomatic Draft Control through the 1/2 in. holeinthecenterofthebottomdoor.BesuretoholdtheDraftControlstraightwhile tightening.Feed the twowires fromthedraftmotorthroughtheflexibleconduitanda90˚fitting.Secure the fitting to the draft motor and that end of theconduitatthistime.ChecktheflapperdoorontheautomaticDraftControlassuringthatitmovesfreely.Installthe(3)brasscoilspringhandlesontothedoorlatchesand the shaker handle. Start the spring handle onto theshaftandtwistitcounter-clockwisewhilepushing.
Aquastat Installation(See optional items, page 7) lay the din rail on a flatsurface, with the flat side down. Secure one end clamp,ontheleftside.Slidethea350controllerontotherailfromrighttoleftuntilitisagainsttheendclamp.SlidetheY350onto the rail andguide theplug-in connector, joining it tothea350.next,installtheS350,again,guidingtheplug-inconnectorcarefully.Installtheotherendclamptotherightsideofthedinrail.Removethecoversfromallthreecontrolsby loosening fourscrewseach. Install the terminalbox tothecontrolsusing(3)chasenipplesandlocknuts,suppliedwiththekit.Usingthefourholesintheterminalbox,mounttheterminalboxandcontrolstotheboilersheetmetalsideasshowninFig.1.Using(2)#8-32nuts,installtheterminalblockontothestudslocatedinsidetheterminalbox.

wiring and ElectricalFollowingthewiringdiagram,runallwirestotheirdesignatedconnections. Save the main power for the last hook-up,andleavethebreakerintheoffposition.Thesensorwiresattachtothea350Controllerontheterminalsmarked“sen”and“com”.Makesurethesensorissubmergedfullyintothewellandsecuredwiththeset-screws.Setting The AquastatInsidethea350control,youwillseeasquarejumper,anda differential dial. Be sure the jumper is in the “Heating”position. The differential dial is set to determine howlow,below the temperaturesetpoint, youwant thewatertemperature to go before the automatic Draft Controlopens.agoodinitialsettingforthisdial is5°.Besurethe120Vwiresareattachedtothecommonandthenormallyopenterminals,andreplacethecover.Theexternaldialissetforthewatertemperatureyouwishtomaintain,agoodsettingis180°.Inside the Y350 control, ensure that your wires areconnectedtothe120VaCterminals,andreplacethecover.Inside the S350 control, which is used as overheatprotection, you’ll see two dials; offset, and differential.Thereisalsoajumperwhich,inthiscase,getsplacedinthe“cooling”position.Theoffsetdialsetsthenumberofdegreesabovethea350setpointthatyouwanttheoverheatdumptoactivate.agoodsetpointwouldbe20°.Thatwouldmeanthatifthewaterreaches200°,usingthea350setpointof180°,theS350wouldcloseit’scontactsandenergizetheoverheatdumpzone.Thedifferentialdialsetsthepointthattheoverheatdumpwouldstop.With thedifferentialsetat15°, using the temperatures above, the circuitwould re-open,stoppingtheoverheatdumpatawatertemperatureof185°.The120Vwiringisattachedonthenormallyopenandthecommonposition.Thenormallyclosedpositionisnotused.Re-installthecoversontothethreeControls.
Optional ItemsThereisadomestichotwatercoilavailableforyourTridentBoiler.Thecoilinstallsinthefrontoftheboiler,andallowsyour domesticwater to be heated by the heating systemwater.Installthecoilnow,byremovingtheroundplateandreplacing it with the coil and it’s round plate. Be sure totightentheboltsevenly,toensureagoodseal.Ifelectricback-upisdesired,installnow.Therewillbetwoadditionalcontrolboxestoaddtoyouraquastat,whichwillrequiretheuseofalongerdinrail.ThetwoheatingelementswillinstallintothefrontoftheboilerasshowninFig.1
VentingTheHarman®TridentBoilermustbeinstalledintoachimneyapprovedforsolidfuelburningappliances.IntheU.S.,theboilermust be connected to; (1) aprefabricated chimneycomplyingwiththerequirementsforTypeHTchimneys intheStandardforChimneys,FactoryBuilt,ResidentialTypeandBuildingHeatingappliances,Ul103.Or; (2) a codeapprovedmasonrychimneywithaflueliner.InCanada,withprefabricatedchimneysystemstestedandlistedtotheHighTemperatureChimneyStandardUlCS-629,orwithacodeapprovedmasonrychimney.Theminimum recommendedheightforanychimneyis16ft.(4.8m)abovethefluecollar.Donotreducefluediameter.nominalsizeflueis8X8in.orequivalent,upto8X12in.Codesalsorequirethatthechimneymustextendaminimumof

InstallationPlumbingTheHarman®TridentBoilercanbeusedasa“Standalone”boiler or as an add-on to an existing hot water heatingsystem.The diagrams in this manual are meant to show thenecessary equipment and piping. Your system may lookvery different. However, if configured properly, the sameresultswillbeachieved.Fig.6showsa typicalplumbingdiagram for tying intoanexisting system. This method provides water circulationbetween the two boilers with a circulating pump. In thissetup,thedomesticwatercoil intheexistingboilerwillbeheated,makingitunnecessarytoinstallawatercoilintheTridentBoiler.Tying-intoanexistingboilermustbedoneinthereturnlinebetween thecirculatorand theexistingboiler.Runapipefromtheretoasmallcirculator,andthenintothe1-1/4in.fittingontherearoftheTridentBoiler.nextrunapipefromthe1-1/4in.fittingonthetopoftheTridentBoilertoaTeefittinginthesupplylineoftheexistingboiler.ThisTeefittingmustbeinstalledbetweentheexistingboilerandtheFlowControlValve,asshown inFig.6.anairvalveshouldbeinstalledonthisline.

Thecirculatorinstalledbetweenthetwoboilersmaybehookeduptoruncontinuouslyduringtheheatingseasonor,anadditionalS350control(notsupplied)couldbeinstalledtoturnitonandoffautomatically.Thiscontrolmustbeusedasa“closeonriseoftemperature”(jumperincoolingposition).Harman®that1-1/4in.pipebeusedbetweenthetwoboilers.alsorecommendedisthatthefirstsectionofpipeoffofthetopoftheTridentBoilerbethreadedgalvanizedorthreadedblack-steelpipe.TheHarman®TridentBoilerissuppliedwithadualfunctionaquastat.Thea350isusedtocontroltheautomaticdraftcontrolwhetheropen,toincreaseheat,orclosed,todecreaseheat.TheS350isusedasoverheatprotection.Sinceawoodorcoalfireisstillproducingheatwhenthedraftisclosed,thisoverheatprotectionisrequired.YoucouldhavetheS350energizeacirculatingpumporazonevalveseparatefromtheheatingsystem,oritcouldbehookedupsothatitflowstheheatedwaterthroughoutthesystem.Eitherway,itmustbeabletoflowawayfromtheboiler.Figure7showsatypicalschematicoftheTridentboilerasa“standalone”system.note;thecrossoverpipe(#12)isnottotallynecessarybutisrecommendedtoprovidecirculationwithintheboilerwhiletheheatingsystemissatisfied.Thiswillensureaneventemperaturewithintheboiler.Thetemperingvalveshown(#10)istopreventexcessivetemperatureofthedomesticwater.

OperationAutomatic Draft ControlTheheatoutputisregulatedbytheautomaticdraftcontrolonthebottomdoor.Theelectricmotor(a)opensandclosestheflapperdoor(B).Openingandclosingtheflapperdoorregulatestheairflowintothefirebox.The maximum air flow can be adjusted by turning theadjustingbolt(C).Turncounter-clockwiseformoreair,andclockwiseforlessair.adjustthisboltonlywhiletheflapperdoor is in the closed position. Otherwise, motor damagecouldoccur.Theidleairadjuster(D)controlstheminimumamountofairthatentersthefirebox.adjustment ismadebyturningtheadjusterverticalforzeroidleair,orhorizontalformaximumidleair.ItisbesttostartoutwithamediumsettingasshowninFigure9.

Starting a wood FireMakesuretheboilerandallpipingisfullofwaterandthatallairhasbeenpurgedfromthesystem.Never start a fire without water in the system. An explosion will occur.Turnonelectricalpowertotheboiler.Thisshouldcausetheautomaticdraftcontroltoopen.Open theashpandoor toallow freeairmovement.Withthe firebox door open, crumble approximately 8 sheetsof newspaper and place on the grates. lay some smallkindlingon topof thenewspaper.Besure thiskindling isdryandnomorethan3/4in.indiameter.layerthekindlingin a crisscross type pattern, to allow maximum air flow.nextlaysomelargerpiecesofwoodontopofthekindling(approximately2in.diameter).Usingamatchorlighter,lightthepaperjust insidethedoor.Closeandlatchthefireboxdoorandallowthefiretoburnafewminutes.afteraboutfiveminutes,closetheashpandoorandre-openthefireboxdooraninchortwo,toallowthesmoketoclear.add4or5largerlogs(about4in.diameter)tothewellestablishedfireandclosethefireboxdoor.leavetheashpandooropenforaboutfiveminutesonly.nowopen thefireboxdoorusingthe samemethod as before, always closing the ash pandoorbeforeopeningthefireboxdoor.nowyoucanloadthefireboxtothedesiredlevel.Youmayloadwoodtothetopofthefirebox.Closeandlatchthedoor.Theashpandoormayagainbeopenedtospeedtheignitionprocess.Do not leave the boiler unattended with any door open.afterthewoodisburningwell,closetheashpandoor.Theautomaticdraftcontrolwillnowregulatethefire,basedontemperaturedemand.Theidleairadjustermustbetunedtowherethefiredoesn’tgo out during long periods with no demand. Experiencewill dictate thebest setting for your installation.normally,thetwomanualdraftcontrolsonthefireboxdoorarekeptclosedwhileburningwood.

OperationStarting a Coal FireMakesuretheboilerandallpipingisfullofwaterandthatallairhasbeenpurgedfromthesystem.Never start a fire without water in the system. An explosion will occur.Turnonelectricalpowertotheboiler.Thisshouldcausetheautomaticdraftcontroltoopen.Opentheashpandoortoallowfreeairmovement.Usethesameprocedureasstartingawoodfireexcept,donotloadthe largerdiameterwoodUsewoodabout2 in. diametermaximum.Thissizewillformaveryhotcharcoalbedinlesstime.again,theashpandoormaybeopenedperiodicallytospeedtheignitionprocess.
LoadingCoalshouldneverbeaddedunlessthere isareasonablyhotfire.Thecoalbedshouldbebrightandvigorous.Ifyouhave an active coal bed, full loads can be added at anytime.Ifnot,addnewcoalinlayers,asdescribedinstartingacoalfire.Shaking the GratesShakingshouldbedoneonlywhenthereisawell-establishedfire.Thefrequencyofshakingwilldependonthedegreeofburning.Twicea day shaking is recommended.Thebestresultsareachievedwithshort,choppystrokesasopposedtolong,evenstrokes.Fullrockingofthegratesmayallowburningcoaltofallintotheashpan.Theamountofshakingiscritical,toomuchcandisruptthefirebed,andtoolittlewillrestrictair-flow.Theproperamountofshakingisnormallyachievedwhenhotredcoalsfirststarttodropthroughthegratesintotheashpan.Everyeffortshouldbemadetonotletacoalfireburndowntoolow.Thiswillcausethereloadingprocesstobemuchlonger,witharealgoodchanceoflosingthefirealtogether.Donotshakeorstirwithalowfire.Opentheashpandoortogetmaximumairflowingintothefirebox.Onceburningisrestored,closetheashpandoorandaddalayerofcoaltothefirebed.FollowtheinstructionsunderStartingaCoalFire.When the new coal is thoroughly ignited, and thereisasubstantialbedofhotcoals, thegratesmay thenbeshaken.Ashes and Ash Removalashes shouldneverbeallowed toaccumulateabove thetopoftheashpan.ashesincontactwiththebottomofthegratesactas insulation,which intensifies theheaton thegrates and causes them to sag or warp.also, toomuchashaccumulationwill restrictair-flowwhichwillmakefiremaintenancemoredifficult.Placeashesinasealedmetalcontainer, outside, until they are cooled enough for finaldisposal.Coalproducesconsiderablymoreashthanwood,sotheintervalsbetweenemptyingaremuchshorter.
DO NOT LEAVE THE BOILER UNATTENDED wITH ANY DOOR OPEN.
When you have accumulated a substantial charcoal bed,startaddinga thin layerofcoal.Peaornutsizedcoal isbetterforstartingthanStovecoal.When the first layer is burning with some blue flame,continuetoaddthinlayersofcoaluntilthereisasolidbedofburningcoal.leteachlayerburnablueflamebeforeaddinganotherlayer.additionalcoalcanbelayeredinuntilthebedisapproximately10inchesdeep.Bynow,youshouldhavetheashpandoorclosed,andtheautomaticdraftcontrolwillcontinuetoregulatethefire.The idle air adjustermay need to be set for slightly lessairforcoalthanwood.Hereagain,experiencewilldictatethebestsetting.Themaximumairbolt canbe turnedalltheway“counter-clockwise”toallowforaquickerrecovery.neveradjustthisboltwiththeflapperopen.Thetwomanualdraftcontrols,onthefireboxdoor,areusedtoallowsecondaryair topassover thefirewhenburningcoal.Thishelps toburn thegasses thatareemitted fromthecoalasitisheated.Yoursettingforthesedraftcontrolsshouldbebetween1/2and1 complete turn fromclosed.adjustbothcontrolsequally.

Safety TipsWhen opening the firebox door, it should be cracked,slightlyopen,forafewsecondstoallowairintoburnanygaseswhichmaybepresent.Thiswillalsoallowsmoketobedrawnawayfromthedoor.Whenevertheashpandoorisopen,itshouldbeclosedbeforeopeningthefireboxdoor.The firebox should never be filledwith excessive coal towheretheflueexitisblockedorimpededinanyway.Burning coal produces Carbon Monoxide. If the flue exit is blocked, the Carbon Monoxide can be forced out of the boiler, into the room, with possible FATAL consequences.With theexceptionofstart-upor fresheningof thefire,orperformingashremoval,theashpandoorshouldbekeptclosed.Never install a Harman® Trident Boiler into a chimney with a history of down-drafts.Keep Children Away - May Cause Serious Burns.CAUTION: All surfaces of the boiler are hot. Do not touch. Keep children away. Serious burns will result if touched. This is a heat producing appliance.DANGER: Fire Hazard, Do not use chemicals or flammable liquids to start or “freshen-up” a fire. Severe burns or a house fire may result. Do not burn Garbage, Gasoline, Thinners, Oil, Kerosene Etc. An explosion, a house fire or serious personal injury could result. Keep all such liquids well away from this boiler.

MaintenanceThespiralchamberisbasicallyself-cleaning.However,ifthereisadraftproblemandyouhavebeenburningwoodforalongtimewithlittledemand,thespiralchamberwillneedtobecleaned.Tocleanthespiralchamber,removethestovepipeandscrapeanycreosoteordebrisfromthetopandfrontofthechamber.Therearofthechambershouldnothavemuchaccumulation.Ifitdoes,cleanitout.nOTE:1/4”to1/2”ofcreosoteinthespiralchamberisnormal.Thepipesinsidethefireboxwillaccumulatecreosoteifthedemandforheatistoolow,whenburningwood.1/8”to1/4”ofcreosoteisnormalonthepipesandfireboxwalls.Ifmorecreosotehasaccumulated,itshouldbescrapedoffofthesesurfaces.nOTE:Creosoteinthefireboxcanbeburnedoffbyburningcoalforafewdays.Thefirebricksmaybecomecrackedduringthecourseofnormaloperation.acrackedbrickthatisstillinplace,isstilldoingitsjob,andneednotbereplacedimmediately.Ifabrickisbroken,andhasfallenoutofplace,itshouldbereplacedbeforeanyfurtherburningoccurs.ThefirebricksusedintheTridentBoilerareavailableforreplacementfromyourHarman®dealer.Gasketsonthedoorsaretheretoregulateairtothefirebox.Ifagasketisfailing,you’llnoticedifficultyincontrollingthefire.Inspectthegasketsregularly,andreplacewithHarman®suppliedmaterialonly.

warranty Coverage: Subjecttotheconditions,exclusionsandlimitationssetforthbelow,HHTwarrantstotheoriginalowneroftheProducts,andtoanytransfereetakingownershipoftheProductsatthesiteoforiginalinstallationwithintwoyearsfollowingthedateoforiginalpurchase,thattheProductswilloperatefreefromdefectsinmaterialandworkmanshipundernormalconditionsanduse,asdescribedintheoperatinginstructionsfurnishedwiththeProduct,duringthewarrantyperioddescribedbelow.HHTwill,atitsoption,repairorreplaceanyProductcoveredbythiswarrantythatisdeterminedtobedefectiveinmaterialorworkmanship.
