“Using self-operating equipment to reduce human exposure to the

mining environment and routine or repetitive work.” - Atlas Copco

Terminology:

Manual Operation

– A piece of equipment being operated by a person ‘in the cab’.

Radio Remote Control (RRC)

– A piece of equipment being physically operated by a person through a Line

Of Sight (LOS) or Video-Remote equipment.

Tele-Remote Control

– A piece of equipment being physically operated by a person at an operator

station which is not necessarily located near the equipments' working area.

Autonomous Operation

– A piece of equipment under self control with the possibility of human

supervision and override.

Future Concept Study

The latest generation Atlas Copco Mobile

Miners

A project together with Rio Tinto for rapid development of access and haulage drives

in block cave mines

Overall goal with the project: Average 10-12 m/day advance

Rio Tinto’s Kennecott Utah Copper mine in Salt Lake City will be the trial site in 2013

Future targets

>30% energy reduction

– Intelligent ventilation systems

– Water and water retention

– Compressed air systems

>30% CO² reduction

– Less fuel consumption

– Intelligent equipment

>30% less manpower per tonne

– More capacity per unit

– More machines per operator

Some goals can be achieved today through good ´housekeeping´
