INGOMA DANCE OF MALAWI

is a very famous dance among the Ngoni of . It was originally a war dance.

The Ingoma performance is done by both men and women. The put on special ; carry a spear or a and a shield when dancing. The women put on ordinary clothes, usually wrappers.

During the , men sing, dance and stamp their feet with force, wielding shields, spears or clubs. The women sing along, and in agreement with the men’s performance.

The state President of the Repubic of Malawi, Ngwazi Professor wa Mtharika, (though not a Ngoni) enjoys dancing Ingoma.
