Please record the following chart in your reading notebook. You will be using it to make inferences based on pictures.

Why are these men holding their cell phones in such interesting ways?

Consider the text cluesWhere are they? What are they doing?

Consider background knowledgeWhat do we know about communicating on a cell

phone?

Use the chart you have created to record your clue(s) + background knowledge to come to your conclusion.

Text Clue(s) Background Knowledge

Inference

The men are in a room near a brick wall talking on a cell phone.

They are all talking at the same time.

I know that brick walls can sometimes cause poor reception on a cell phone.

I also know that sometimes when I reposition my phone its because its hard to hear.

I infer that these men are having a problem with reception in the building, making it difficult to hear. Because they are all talking at the same time, this may make it even more difficult.

Record this Example

Working on your own or with a partner at your table, discuss your ideas and record

them on the table in your notebook for the following pictures.

You each need your own notes.

You will have 5 minutes for each picture and then you will discuss your results.

TC + BK = Inference(Text Clues + Background Knowledge = Inference)

Now let’s see what you got!

It’s time for you and your partner to share your

inferences with the rest of the class!

You’re the Reporter!

0 In your table groups you will select a the photo you liked the most. I have printed and laminated copies for your convenience.

0Once you have decided on your picture it is up to your group to become the reporter. What’s the headline? Tell us the story – make sure to include the who, what, when, why and where of the story. Record your stories on chart paper to be presented in class tomorrow!
