Los Al Cardio FLos Al Cardio FLos Al Cardio FLos Al Cardio FLos Al Cardio For Matters of the Heartor Matters of the Heartor Matters of the Heartor Matters of the Heartor Matters of the Heartgroup November 2006, followingthe completion of her Cardiac Elec-trophysiology fellowship at UCLA.She was also associated with thegroup during her general cardiol-ogy fellowship at UC Irvine.“Being a physician is much morethan a job, it’s a lifestyle,” the gooddoctor says. And doesn’t she knowthat! Ever since graduating highschool, it’s been a long and circui-tous journey to where she is atpresent. It was definitely no cakewalk but months and years ofsweat and determination. After the completion of InternalMedicine Residency in Brooklyn,at Wyckoff Heights Medical Cen-ter, an affiliate of Cornell Univer-sity, Dr. Brar spent the next threeyears of training as a Cardiologyfellow at University of California,Irvine. She then went on to spe-cialize in Cardiac Electrophysiol-ogy at UCLA and now practicesgeneral cardiology with a subspe-cialty in electrophysiology.“As a Cardiologist I enjoy havingthe opportunity to help patientsprevent long-term consequences ofheart disease. We perform various

Contd. from B1 diagnostic procedures such as stresstests, echocardiograms and angiogramsto assist in the management of each in-dividual patient,” she says.Explaining her subspecialty shesays, “As a Cardiac Electrophysiolo-gist I am also trained in the branchof cardiology that specializes in theadvanced management of cardiacarrhythmias (also known as palpi-tations or irregular heartbeats). That specialty includes manage-ment through medications and/orspecialized procedures such as elec-trophysiology studies and ablationsto modify the electrical system ofthe heart. An important goal of elec-trophysiology is prevention of sud-den cardiac death that can occur sec-ondary to advanced heart disease(congestive heart failure) with theimplantation of devices such as int-racardiac defibrillators. TheBiventricular pacemaker implant-able cardioverter defibrillator is an-other device that allows for patientsto have improvement in their qual-ity of life in the setting of severecongestive heart failure.”Discussing the major cause of heartdisease among Indian-Americans,Dr. Brar explains, “ heart disease

nutrients. The preparation of foodin a manner that is low in fat andsodium is the key to preventinghigh blood pressure and coronaryartery disease. Maintaining an ac-tive lifestyle with regular exerciseis sometimes difficult to achievein our hectic daily lives. We shoulddevote time to exercise in the sameway that we do for preparing ourmeals, caring for our families andfocusing on religion.”Asked if Indian patients would beat an advantage having her as theirdoctor, she reiterates that as agroup all the physicians at LosAlamitos Cardiovascular havededicated themselves to caring forpatients regardless of theirethnicity. This is also manifestedby the diverse make up of the phy-sicians and staff. However, as a fe-male physician of Indian origin shebelieves that it is always comfort-ing to communicate with someonewho is knowledgeable of your back-ground and willing to understandand work with cultural differences.“My recognition and appreciation ofmy Indian heritage affords me theability to communicate and under-stand our daily life. This allows meto tailor recommendations for heartdisease and lifestyle changes to allof my patients,” she adds.Dr Brar has had an interesting edu-cational background having doneher Medical School in India.Would she recommend Indian-American students looking to goin for medicine to follow this path?Commenting on this she says, “Ihave been blessed with the oppor-tunity to experience the best ofboth worlds. After completing highschool in the United States, I at-tended medical school in India. The path that I chose required agreat deal of sacrifice, dedicationand determination. Those threeattributes are necessary for anyoneseeking a career in health care. Ireceive daily affirmation of thechoices I made. My advice to any-one seeking to travel this path isto make sure they are on this path

has become a prominent healthissue in many cultures that haveimmigrated to the United States. In the Indian-American popula-tion there is a high incidence ofMetabolic Syndrome (elevatedblood sugar, obesity and high cho-lesterol) which increases the riskof development of coronary arterydisease. The lack of early diagno-sis and management makes itmore likely for people of Indianorigin to have higher risks of de-veloping heart disease and itscomplications. Basic steps such asrisk-factor modification, exerciseand diet are critical to reversingthis trend. Socially encouragingfamily and friends to practice pre-ventive health care and seek earlymedical attention is the very ba-sis to reducing the incidence ofadvanced medical problems inthe Indian population. ‘’Giving valuable advice and prac-tical tips to Indian–Americans re-garding their heart health,She says, “Managing heart healthstarts with living a balancedlifestyle. Indian cooking usuallyinvolves a large amount of veg-etables which provide essential

for all of the correct reasons.”There was an upside and downsideto studying in India. As she says, “I had the opportunity to learn fromamazing professors who would ac-cept nothing less than excellence. The vast spectrum of disease andthe focus on diagnostic skills mademy early training a unique experi-ence. These clinical buildingblocks are utilized by me daily.Although it was difficult to leavemy family, studying in India af-forded me precious time spentwith my grandparents and aidedin my maturation as an Indianwoman. The fact that I completedmedical school immediately afterhigh school was also an advantageas it allowed me to complete mytraining in 5 years. Although I amof Indian origin and have had atraditional upbringing, I was stillconsidered an American graduatestudent (foreign student) studyingin India. Following the comple-tion of my medical school training,I was considered to be a foreigngraduate when applying for medi-cal residencies in the United States. The more prestigious residency pro-grams are usually available to USmedical school graduates.”Coming to future plans she is veryhappy to be a partner in a well re-spected cardiology group and hopesto maintain her teaching affiliationswith both UCLA and UC Irvine.“ The population is aging andskilled physicians will be a criti-cal component of maintaining thepopulation’s health. My goals forthe future are to continue to helpall people improve their healthand overall well-being. This willafford them more quality time tospend with their loved ones. Ihope to continue to be a positiverole model for my patients andtheir families and to continue toprovide them with optimum car-diovascular care.”For more info: www.losalcardio.com. Los Al
