Implementation of a sensory garden in a care setting

• Background of the Uplands at Oxon

• Why we wanted the Sensory Garden

• What difference has it made?

The Uplands at Oxon

Award winning, family owned and operated care home with nursing supporting 81 people with complex and life limiting conditions and/or dementia

The Uplands at Oxon

• New Build in 2007 on newly zoned agricultural land adjacent to a Hospice

• Landscaping was a major need to create gardens and useable space for predominantly wheelchair or mobility compromised clients

• Majority of residents and their families from country /agricultural background

The Sensory Garden

• Original idea came from attending the Shrewsbury Flower show and seeing the Show Gardens

• Contacted locally based, Chelsea Gold Medal winner, Caspar Gabb

• Designed with the staff and residents for the Shrewsbury Flower Show with the relocation of the Garden to the Care Home integral to the design

The Sensory Garden• Staff and residents presented the garden at the Shrewsbury

Flower show and won best in class

• Garden then relocated back to the Care Home and has provided a fantastic resource

• Enables quiet contemplation and reflection even though it is adjacent to the car park and busy care home entrance

The Benefits

• Has enabled residents and their families quiet space

• Provided area for reflection and counselling of families

• Has provided focal point for gardens

• Encouraged residents – and staff – to be outside more and to garden themselves
