Yorkshire Gardens Trust Grant – restoration of the

sensory garden

We received a cheque for £1000 from Val and Caroline of the Yorkshire Gardens Trust last month. The money has been used to re-create the Mayor of Pontefract’s sensory garden which was first opened in 1960 but had long since been grassed over. Despite the theft of many new plants in the spring, the sensory garden is coming on. Look out for the spring bulbs next year.

Three new benches now occupy the previously empty spaces in front of the sensory garden. The centre bench, in front of the stone plaque commemorating its first opening by the Mayor in 1960, was donated by Corra Bike Ride Charity, Featherstone. On the left, receiving the cheque at Girnhill Lane WMC on 1st November

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR GARDENING SESSIONS

Volunteer gardening sessions in the Valley Gardens are being held in January and February, weather permitting. The jobs will be pruning, cutting back and general tidying. The dates are: January Saturday 11th and Tuesday 21st, February Saturday 8th and Thursday 20th. Meet in the car park next to the Bowling Green at 2pm.

FUND RAISING FOR THE PLAYGROUND

Providing a play area for small children is the priority for Friends of Friarwood Valley Gardens. As reported in the last newsletter the cost is likely to be more than £30,000, including cost of the play equipment, construction of the playground and grass protection mesh. We will be applying for a grant but most funders require match funding to be raised by the applicant. We launched our fund raising efforts for the playground on Friday 29th November with a table top sale on Pontefract Market and made £146.

The second Pontefract Lantern held on 19th October Festival by the Pontefract Lioness Club attracted a large turn-out and a surprising variety of lanterns. The lantern parade started at the Castle, passed through the town centre, finishing in the Valley Gardens where there was a band and refreshments. Heavy rain just before the start threatened the event, but it quickly passed and it was considered a great success – it will be repeated yearly. We are planning more events in the Valley Gardens for 2014, starting with Easter, which is late April next year. Any other suggestions?
