A Good Presentation

Elements

• Voice• Appearance• Body language• Oral language• Personality

Voice

• Pleasant, sense of warmth• Natural, sincere• Dynamic• Expressive• Easily heard

Appearance

• Appropriate -time, location, and audience

• Smile• Dress• Grooming

Body language

• Distracting mannerisms– Rocking– Swaying– Finger tapping– Hugging the lectern

• Convey emotions • Good comfortable speaking posture

Eye contact

• After your voice, your eyes are the most powerful tool for communicating

• Include all the audience, each individual• Monitor attentiveness & reaction

Oral language• Culturally appropriate• Language appropriate for the occasion• Do not use words that are offensive or

obscure –No distracting noises (um, ah, er) • Speak slow enough and emphasise items

of importance• Use pauses to command attention• Be enthusiastic – nothing great has ever

been achieved without enthusiasm!

• Be natural• Spontaneous• Conversational• Be yourself, genuine, natural

Aides

• Start with a story• Power point• Microphone• Lectern• Platform• Humour - will it work?• Handouts – best at the end

Preparation• If you fail to plan - you plan to fail• Practise• 100 words = 1 minute• Prepare a speech for every invitation• Mark paragraphs – Essential, Necessary,

Desirable – END• Run through audio visual and check

correct version/software
