MessagefromtheExecutiveDirectorEventhoughwearebarelyintothemonthofMarch,theIHSA’s“MarchMadness”hastakenasolidholdonthestateofIllinois.OursmallandlargeschoolgirlshavealreadycrownedfourIHSAStatechampions.SectionalandSupersectionalplayisinfullswingwithourlargeandsmallschoolboys.Ittrulyisanexcitingtimeoftheyear!

Forthoseofyouwhohavecompletedyourseasons,congratulationsonajobwelldone.Thosestillaliveinstateplayoffcompetition,myhopewouldbethatyourteamsplaytothebestoftheirabilitiesforaslongastheyareable!

ItismysincerehopethatallIBCAmembershavehadaproductiveandrewardingyear.Therearesomanylessonsthatthegameteachesallofus.Somewelearnthehardway,somenotsotough!Thebottomlineisthatwedolearnandwedogrow.Ultimately,wepasstheselessonsontotheyoungpeoplethatweworkwith.Trulyservingandcaringforthemiswhywedowhatwedo!

InearlyMay,ourCoachesoftheYearfromthroughoutthestatewillberecognizedatourIBCABanquetatIllinoisStateUniversity.Wewillalsohonorour2017IBCAHallofFameinductees.

Finally,onthesecondSaturdayinJune,approximately120ofIllinois’finestgirlsandboysseniorbasketballstudent-athleteswillcompeteinour2017IBCAAll-StargamestobeheldatPontiacHighSchool.WelookforwardtoanothergreatweekendoffellowshipandcompetitionwithsomeamazingyoungpeoplealongwiththeiroutstandingAll-Starcoaches!

TheIBCAhascontinuedtomoveforwardinourmanyinitiativeswiththesupportofthecoachesfromaroundthestate.Ourprofessionisnoteasybutitisveryrewarding.Werecentlylostourlastgamewhichhappenstoalmostallofusthistimeofyear.ThisgamewasdifferentinthatitmarkedtheendofmycoachingcareerasIamretiringfromeducationthisyear.

Reflectingonthelast37yearsofcoachingitoccurstomethatnearlyallofthemostimportantmomentsarerelatedtotherelationshipsbuiltwithothers.Ihavebeenblessedovermycoachingcareerwithincrediblementors,assistantcoaches,administrators,adversariesandplayers.TheIBCAhasplayedavitalroleinanysuccessachievedandinsustainingmycareeroverthelast37years.

ThroughtheIBCAIhavebeenencouragedtogrowprofessionally,giventheopportunitytosupportotherswhoaretryinghelpplayersdevelop,andmetawholehostoflike-mindedpeoplewhosegreatestdesireistohelpplayersgrowintosuccessfulyoungmen.ManyofmyclosestfriendsarecoachesthatIhavemetthroughtheIBCA.Friendswhoareengagedinthesamestruggleanddealwiththesameissues.Coachingisnoteasybutitisvitalthatwehaveanabundantnumberofeffectiveprofessionalcoachestoadvancethedevelopmentoftheyouthofournation.TheIBCAhasprovidedmewiththesupporttocontinuethestruggleanditwillcontinuetoworktodothesameforallofthebasketballcoachesinthestate!

TheIBCAisexcitedregardingtheBasketballMuseumofIllinois.ProgresshasbeencontinuingtowardssecuringthemuseumbuildinginPontiac.Thenextstepwillbeincreasingthefundraisingeffortstomovetowardsmakingourmuseumdreamareality.WeareeagerlyawaitinggoodnewsfromPontiacanydaynow.

WearealsointheprocessofastructuralchangeintheleadershipoftheIBCAtobetterincludethevoiceofthecoachesfromallareasofthestate.Wearegoingtoinitiateasystemwherethereare7divisionalboardsofdirectorswhowillservetheneedsofeachlocalarea(Division)ofthestateandmeetlocallytodiscusscurrentissues.The7divisionaldirectorswillbemembersoftheexecutiveboardofdirectorswhorepresenttheentirestate.Inthisway,wearehopefultobettermeettheneedsofallofthecoachesineveryareaofthestate.ThisisinlinewiththeIBCA’ScontinuingmissionistosupporttheprofessionalgrowthofallIllinoisBasketballcoachesandtopromotethegameforcoaches,playersandfans.

AspresidentoftheIBCAIwouldliketoonceagainpersonallythankallofyouforyoursupportandforyourcommitmenttodevelopingplayersbothathleticallyandpersonally.Ithasbeenapleasureandanhonortoworkwithallofyouovertheyears.IfeelblessedthatIamanIllinoisBasketballCoachandaproudmemberoftheIllinoisBasketballCoachesAssociation.Thankyouforallthatandsomuchmore!

TheFourMentorsYouNeedbyRichCzeslawski,HeadBoys'BasketballCoach,CrystalLakeCentralIBCADirectorofCommunications/TreasurerNHSBCADirectorofDevelopmentandCommunications(articleasappearedinNABCTimeoutMagazine–Winter2017)

Overthepast10years,adisturbingtrendhassurfacedinthecoachingcommunity.Coachingturnoverisrampant,andcareersarebeingcutshortatanalarmingrate.ThistrendwasfirstdiscussedatanNHSBCAmeetingattheFinalFourseveralyearsago,andwehavekeptoureyeoniteversince.

Manyreasonsforthetrendwerebroughttothetableinopendiscussion,butthemostoftenmentionedwere:

• Increasingparentalinvolvement/expectations• Lackofadministrativesupport• Theuseofsocialmediamakingeveryone’sopinionpublic• Lackofatrueoffseason• Competingwithoutsideinfluences• Decreasinginterestfromfanbases

Allofthesymptomsabovepointedtoanoverarchingthemeofcoachingburnoutasthecauseofthetrend.

Tohelpreducecoachingburnout,ourorganizationisputtingtogetherresourcestohelpcoachesintheseareas.Strategiestohelpcopewithstress,managetime,developrelationshipswithparentsandadministrators,embracesocialmedia,andtakecareofthebodyandmindareforthcoming.

Anotherpossiblereasonthecoachingcarouselisspinningoutofcontrolisthattoooftencoachesaregettingjobsbeforetheyareready,andarelefttofendforthemselveswithoutanestablishedsupportsystem.Theneedforgoodmentoringismoreprevalentnowthanever,andthisisanotherwaytheNHSBCAhopestosupportitsmembersinthecomingyear.

Herearefourmentorseverycoachshouldseektoaddtotheirlives:

1)Thetraditionalmentor.Thisdoesn’tnecessarilyhavetobean“oldschool”coach,butyouwanttofindsomeonewhohasbeenthere,donethat.Someonewhomaynotevenbeabletorelatetothenuancesofcoachingtoday’splayers,butcangiveyouvaluableperspectiveandactasabarometerforsituationsastheygetmoreandmorecomplicated.Thismentorusuallydoesagreatjobofkeepingyougroundedandfocusedonthebigpicture.

2)Thepeermentor.Thismentorissomeonewhoisinasimilarpositiontoyours.Acoach,whoiscurrentlygoingthroughthesamebattles,canofferadifferentperspectiveonthesamesituations,andallowyoutoreturnthefavor.Theopportunitytomentorsomeoneelseispivotalinthegrowthofacoach.Manycoachesfear,orforget,thismentorrelationshipbecausethecoachingprofessionhasbecomeincreasinglycompetitiveanditmayseemoddtoenteramutualmentoringrelationshipwithsomeoneyoumaycompeteagainst.Resistthatthought,andembracewhatcouldbethemostimportantrelationshipyoumakeoutsideyourstaff!(continuedonpage4)

3)Theoutsidermentor.Whilethepeermentorisoftenfearedorforgotten,theoutsidermentorisrarelyeventhoughtof.Thisissomeonewhoissuccessfulinsomeareaoutsideofcoaching.Theymaybeabusinessleader,aneducationaladministrator,orjustsomeoneyouadmireforthepersonthattheyare.Theydon’tneedtoknowathingaboutbasketball,andareoftenmoreimpactfulwhentheydon’t.Theyprovideaglobalperspectivethathelpsyoutakethebasketballblindersoffandfocusonthebiggestpicture,life.Thismentoroftenservesasamoralcompassforyouandcanguideyouthroughthingsgoingoninyourlifeoffthecourtaswell.

4)Theever-presentmentor.KevinEastmanisoneofthemostinsightfulclinicspeakersonthecircuitrightnow.Ifyouevergetachancetospendtimewithhimorhearhimspeak,don’tmissit.Withagrinonhisface,Kevintalksaboutallofthe“clinics"heattendsinthecomfortofhisownhome(orhotelroom).Hethenletsyouinonhissecret,bypointingtoallofthebooks,videos,podcasts,etc.thatarereadilyavailableforcoachestolearnfrom.

Inthesamevein,oneofthesevenprinciplesforagoodlifepasseddowntoJohnWoodenbyhisfatherwas,“Drinkdeeplyfromgoodbooks”.Startbyfindingabookorvideothatyouidentifywith,andthenfollowthepaththatleadsyoudown.Invariably,eachbook/resourceyoufindwillleadyoutoanexponentialnumberofotherslikeit.Intherareinstancethatthebookorarticleyouarereadingdoesnotciteanotherresource,seekouttheauthorandaskthemwhotheirmajorinfluencesare.Usingthisstrategy,youwillquicklycompilealistofmentorswhosethoughtsyoucanhaveatyourfingertipsatamoment’snotice.

Themostvaluableresourcesavailabletocoachesareothercoaches.Bewillingtoshareideas,andbeopentogettingnewideasfromothersandyouwillbuildasupportsystemthatwillkeepyouinthefight!

Playersneedtolearnhowtoplaybasketballafteraninitialplaybreaksdown.Ascoaches,wecanonlycontrolacertainamountofwhathappensonthecourt.Therestisuptoourplayerstoreact.Attachedareafewsimpledrillsthathelptoteachplayerswhentomakethecorrectcutdependingonhowtheyareguarded.Thereareafewrulesthatthecutterneedstobeawareofinordertomakethecorrectcut.• Thedefenderwilldictatewhatcuttomake.• Acutalwaysstartswiththeoffensivemanbringinghis/herdefenderawayfromtheball.

-Iftheoffensivemanislocatedonthewing,he/sheshouldbringhis/herdefendertowardsthebaseline.-Iftheoffensivemanislocatedattheguardspot,he/sheshouldcuttowardstheweaksidewingpositionbeforeattackingthescreen.-Thescreenerisasimportantasthecutter.

• Forthefirstcut,thecutteralwayslookstomakeacurlcut.Oncehe/shemeetsthescreener,theybothwillthendecidehowthecutter’sdefenderisgoingtoguardthescreen.Thisiswhenthecutterwilldecidewhichtypeofcuttoexecute.

*Anothergreatdrillthatworksonspacing,screening,andcuttingiscalled“50GreatScreens.”Thisisanicecompetitivedrillthatnotonlyworksonoffense,butalsoforcesthedefensetobemoreaggressive.50GreatScreens:

1. 5-on-5fullcourtdrill.2. Startthedrillwithajumpballatcentercourt.3. Theoffenseisawarded1-pointforthecombinationofagreatscreen,thecutterreadinghis/herdefender

correctlyandmakingthecorrectcut,andthescreenerthengoingoppositeofthecutter.Ifthatcombinationisnotallcorrect,1-pointisnotawarded.Thecoachmakesthisdecision.

4. Theoffensecanalsoscore1-pointforamadebasket.Ifthebasketisanuncontestedlay-up,thentheoffensereceives5-points.Whentheoffensescores,theygettokeeptheballandcontinuetoplayoffense.

5. Theoffensecanlosepointsforaturnover(5-pointsdeductedfromscore).6. Thedefensecanearn1-pointperdeflection.7. Transitiononmissedbasketsandturnovers.8. Thefirstteamtoscore50-pointswins.

BeLoyaltotheProgram:Oneofthemostimportantrolesofanassistantcoachistobeloyaltotheheadcoachandtotheprogram.Therearemanyinfluencesandissuesthatmayemergeduringthecourseofaseason.Makesureyoualwayskeepthebestinterestsoftheplayers,yourprogram,andtheheadcoachinmindinwhateveryoudo.Rememberit’sabouttheteamandnotyou.BeAvailableandPresent:Thebestassistantcoachesaretheonesthatarepresentallofthetime.Makeyourselfavailabletotheheadcoachanddedicatethenecessarytimeneededtomaketheprogramsuccessful.Putintheextraworkandalwayslooktogoaboveandbeyondyourbasicresponsibilitiesasacoach.DotheWork:Nojoborresponsibilityisbeneathyou.Asanassistantcoach(andaheadcoach)youneedtobewillingtodothedirtywork.Buildingaprogramandsustainingsuccessarebothdonebyputtinginworkthatmightnotalwaysbefunorfilledwithglory.Coachingisnotforthefaintofheart–itrequiresatremendousamountofenergy,effort,andtime.Ifyouwanttobesuccessful,youmustputintheworkeveryday.BeWillingtoLearn:Along-timesuccessfulheadcoachoncesaid,“IfIevergettothepointinmycareerwhereIstoplearning,Iwillstopcoaching.”Themoreyoulearnaboutthegame,themoreyou’llunderstandhowlittleyoutrulyknow.Beasponge.Learnasmuchasyoucan.Yourheadcoachisagreatsourceforknowledge,butyoumayalsolearnfromcoacheswhomayhavelessexperiencethanyou.Takesomethingfromeveryone.Althoughyoumightnotalwaysagreewithothercoaches,maintainanopenmindandunderstandthatthereisn’tonerightwaytodothings.FindaSpecialty:Findsomethingyoucandofortheprogramthatyoucanown.Developaspecialityinanareathatcanmakeapositiveimpactonthesuccessofyourteamandprogram.Bringsomethingspecialtothetable.Thereareavarietyofareasinwhichyoucanbringsomethingspecialtoaprogram.Someideasinclude:teamdefense,shootingskillwork,technology,scouting,organizingclinics,breakingdowngamefilm,creatingaprogramnewsletter,andmore.CommunicatewiththeHeadCoach:Whetheryouarethefreshmanheadcoachorthesophomoreassistant,youneedtomakesuretheheadcoachisawareofeverythingthatisgoingoninhisorherprogram.Don’texpecttheheadcoachtosolveallofyourproblemsforyou,butmakesurethattherearenosurprisesintheprogram.KnowYourRole:Asayoungcoach,itiseasytoletyourambitiontakeover.Makesureyoudon’toverstepyourbounds.Knowwhatyourroleisintheprogramandfillittoyourgreatestability.Dowhatevertheheadcoachasksofyouandneverforgetthatyouarehis/herassistant.HaveSelf-Discipline:Beontime.Followschoolandprogramrulesandexpectations.Followthroughonwhatyou’reaskedtodo.Carryyourselfandrepresenttheschoolandprograminapositivewayatalltimes.Makesureyouexerciseself-disciplineinallthatyoudo.Notonlydoesitmakeyouabettercoachandhelptheprogram,itsetsagreatexampleforyourplayers.GiveSuggestions:Findwaystocontributetotheprogramwhencalledtodoso.Don’tbeafraidtogivesuggestionsandunderstandthatthereisagoodchancetheheadcoachmightnotusewhatyousay.However,itisimportanttogiveanotherperspective,anotheridea,andanotherplan.Don’ttakeitpersonallyifyourideagetsshotdown,anddon’tgloatifitisusedsuccessfully.PromoteaUnifiedMessage:Stayonmessage.Don’tcontradictwhatthemessageoftheprogramandtheheadcoachis,evenifyoudon’tcompletelyagreewithit.Successfulprogramshaveaunifiedmessage.Asanunder-levelcoach,sticktotheprogramthatisinplaceandprepareyourplayersforvarsitybasketball.Alldisagreementsamongstaffmembersshouldbediscussedprivately.Successfulprogramsalmostalwaysactasone.

byPaulHarris,HeadBasketballCoach,HighlandParkHighSchoolandJohnCamardella,HeadBoysBasketballCoach,ProspectHighSchoolFormerIBCAPresidentMikeKolzeusedtosaythatbeingaHeadBasketballCoachis“likeputtingbeadsonastringwithnoknotatthebottom.”Thereisalwayssomethingtodo,especiallyinNovember.Oneaspectofourjobthatmanyofusdreadisthegeneralparentmeetingonceourteamhasbeenselected.OurAthleticDirectorswantustohavethesemeetings“toopenthelinesofcommunication”and“geteveryoneonthesamepage”.Unfortunately,thesegeneralmeetingsoftendotheopposite.Itishardtoopencommunicationwhen99%ofthegeneralmeetingisthecoachdoingthetalking.Andbecauseplayersandparentsarecomingintothisexperiencefromdifferentperspectives,it’sunlikelya½hourmeetingwillhelpeveryonegetonthesamepage.Asaresult,wehaveimplementedasystemofcommunicatingwithplayersandparentsthatmayseemdangerous,buthasproducedverypositiveresults.TheideaisaHomeVisitforeveryvarsityplayerintheprogram.WegottheideafromcurrentDePaulUniversityMen’sCoach,JerryWainwright.WhenCoachWainwrightwasahighschoolcoachatHighlandParkinthelate1970sandearly1980sheusedtheHomeVisittogettoknowplayersandtheirfamiliesinamorethoroughwayandtogetthecommunityexcitedaboutbasketball.Hewouldbringtheplayerhisuniformoranewsetofpracticegearaswellasagiftfortheparents,suchasabuttonorbumpersticker.ThereisnodoubtthatHomeVisitshelpedestablishapositivecultureintheHighlandParkcommunity.Manycoacheswillsaythattheydon’thavethetimetovisiteachplayer’shomeortheyarefearfulofopeningthemselvesuptocriticismfromadisgruntledparent.Whilethoserisksexist,wehavefoundthattherewardsfaroutweighanyrisks.Thefollowinglisthighlightssomeoftheadvantageswehavediscoveredthroughthisprocess.• Itallowsyoutotailoryourpresentation–ageneralmeetingisjustthat,general.Itisimpossibletoindividualizeyourspeechtofittheneedsofallyourplayersandparents.TheHomeVisitallowsfordiscussionthatisrelevanttothatparticularfamily.Forexample,acoachmaywanttocommunicatedifferentlytoaplayerwhohasthepotentialtoplayincollegethantoaplayerwhomaynotseemuchvarsityplayingtime.Thesameistrueifyouarecommunicatingwiththefamilyofaseniorplayerversusthefamilyofafreshmanyouhavemoveduptothevarsity.

• Givesyouachancetotalkaboutwheretheplayerfitsintoyourteam–Whilethismaybeoneofthetougherpartsofthemeeting,thisisthepartthatmaysaveyousomeheadachesastheyeargoeson.Onethingweguardagainstintheseconversationsisoverpromising.Nothinggetscoachesintotroublemorewithplayers,andwithparents,thanoverpromisingandthenunderdelivering.Honestyisthebiggestkeywhendiscussingaplayer’srole.Bydiscussingthepossiblerolesaplayerwillhavetheopportunitytocompeteforinfrontoftheirparents,wearedoingmorethangettingeveryoneonthesamepage.We’retryingtogeteveryoneonthesamesentence,readingatthesamespeed.

• It’sachancetoseetheplayer’sfamilydynamic–Wecanlearnsomuchaboutaplayerbygoingintohis/herhome.Thisinformationoftenallowsustoreachthatplayerandinturngetthemostoutofhim/her.Itisgoodtoknowiftheplayeristheyoungestof7childrenoranonlychild.Thisinformationmayhelpustounderstandwhytheplayerisactingacertainway.It’salsoimportanttoknowiftheplayerhasbothparentslivingathomeoriftherehasbeenadivorceordeathinthefamily.Themoreinformationwehave,thebetterableandpreparedwearetohaveanimpact,bothonandoffthecourt.(continuedonpage8)

(continuedfrompage7)• It’sanopportunitytolaythegroundrulesforhowcommunicationshouldoccurthroughouttheyear–Byhavingthismeetingfacetoface,weestablishacultureofdirectandhonestcommunication.Toomanytimesparentswanttosendalong-windede-mailoranemotionalvoicemessage;thisisouropportunitytoletthemknowhowwedobusiness.Itisalsoachancetodiscusswithparentsthethingswewillandwillnottalkabout.Forexample,weoftentellparentsthatwewilltalktothemaboutanythingtheywanttotalkaboutexceptplayingtime,teamstrategy,andotherstudent-athletes.

Beingavarsitybasketballplayerisabigcommitment.Weaskalotoftheplayersandparentsinourprograms,andTheHomeVisitgivesusanopportunitytoshowparentsthatwevalueeveryonewhoismakingthiscommitment.FromourAllConferenceplayer,toourstudentmanager,everyoneisimportant.WehavefoundthattheHomeVisitleadstoamutualrespectbetweencoachesandparents.Byacknowledgingtotheparentthattheremaybetimeswhenwewillagreetodisagree,wehelptodiffusepotentialissues.ThismutualrespectcancomeinhandywhenyouwalkpastagroupofparentsataSaturdaymorningJVgameafteratoughconferenceloss.Italsoshouldbearemindertousascoachesthatwearehandlingsomeone’smostprizedpossession.Byspendingalittlebitoftimeineachplayer’shomeweshowparentsthatwearetakingthatresponsibilityseriously.Formoreinformation,feelfreetocontactusatpharris@dist113.org/john.camardella@d214.org
