How to get started with UX design

1. Learn constantly

2. Start incorporating UX practices in your daily job

3. Get a mentor

Don Norman coined “UX” in 90s

"User experience encompasses all aspects of the end-user's interaction with:• the company• its services, and• its products”

UX DESIGN is a PROCESS

UX and UI are NOT the same

UX is NOT all about User

UX is NOT the ROLE of one person/single discipline

Practice makes perfect

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are not.

B2B Big data product serves weather data to Africa in bulk

Information Architecture and Design was on demand“Information architecture is the practice of deciding how to arrange the parts of something to be understandable.”

We have built IA without knowing users’ mental model – bad design practice

Wireframes validate IA with the product owner

Hi-Fi Mockups were an overkill and imprecise due to lack of significant amount of requirements

Enterprise products users don’t have voices

Product owner: - “This B2B product is already sold, don’t care much about end-users.. They will have to use it”Me: - “That why we have SharePoint in the way it is...”

Me: - “Who are the users anyway?”Product owner: -“It’s a wide range of class of users. The product will be used for a wide range of needs. Various vertical, various needs”

One good thing - We have introduced design process

Developers use their implementation models when they design error messages

List can’t be empty

Better: Add an alert

Web Front developer might not apply/know design rules or just simply busy

Alignment violates proximity

Better: Move related controls close to each other, while keep them left aligned

Learn and ask as you go

1. Learn constantly

2. Start incorporating UX practices in your daily job

3. Get a mentor• Don’t ask “Will you be my mentor?”• Ask people both senior and junior to you for specific

advice to solve a problem

THANK YOU FOR FEEDBACK
