Truth or Lie?

1.Each set of partners will have 12 cards with statements about cells.

2.Together – Sort them into piles of statements that are true and statements that are false.

3.Be ready to answer questions quickly about which ones are true and which are false.

I will read off:• The statement number• Ask you to signal with thumbs up if it’s

true

Don’t rely on others!

Truth or Lie?

1. All matter is made up of cells.

2. All living things are made up of cells.

3. There are no single-celled organisms.

4. Leaves contain cells, but roots do not.

5. Cells do not carry out essential life functions for the organism

they are part of

6. In the early development of an organism, cells grow in size

but the number of cells remains constant.

7. Cells provide structure but not function to living things.

8. New cells can only come from existing cells.

9. Some living parts of organisms are not made of cells

10.All cells are the same size and shape.

11.Cells are the smallest functional unit of a living thing.

12.Organisms grow when existing cells get larger

Cell Theory – Which are true?

The 3 Correct Statements make up the Cell Theory

Cells are the smallest functional unit of a living thing.

All living things are made up of cells.

New cells can only come from existing cells.

All living things are made up of cells

Microscope work led to discovery of cells

• Used light microscope to look at thin slices of plant tissues -- cork

• Looked empty, like monk’s chamber

• Called tiny chambers “cells”

Robert Hooke ( 1665)

Leeuwenhoek ( 1600’s)

• First to see living microscopic organisms

Using the Cell Theory, answer these 3 questions:

What function does a cell have?

Where do cells come from?

How do organisms grow?

1. All matter is made up of cells.

2. All living things are made up of cells.

3. There are no single-celled organisms.

4. Leaves contain cells, but roots do not.

5. Cells do not carry out essential life functions for the organism

9. Some living parts of organisms are not made of cells

10.All cells are the same size and shape.

11.Cells are the smallest functional unit of a living thing.

12.Organisms grow when existing cells get larger

Revisit Cell Theory – Which 3 are true?

The Life of a CellThe Cell Cycle Occurs in 3 Stages

• Interphase – the longest phase– G1, S and G2

• Mitosis – the process of cell division– Prophase– Metaphase– Anaphase– Telophase

• Cytokinesis – forms 2 identical cells

Mitosis – the process of cell division

• Cell division is an important process because it is involved in growth, development, repair and reproduction

• Cells contain genetic information, DNA, that tells it what to do

• When a cell divides into two new cells, each cell gets a complete set of DNA from the parent cell.

• These new cells are created from a parent cell through the process of mitosis

Interphase is the longest phase of the cell cycle. The G1, S and G2 phases all occur during interphase. The process of Mitosis only takes up about 25% of the cells life.
