It is the time of year that we stop to enjoy family,
friends and to give thanks. We at Hoboken Middle School
are thankful for the opportunity to teach your children.
We are thankful for the parents who have supported and
continue to support our program.
We wish you and your families a very happy and
healthy Thanksgiving.

Analyzing Heart Rates Last week, Ms. Kurt’s students in PLTW learned about the proper way health
professionals take patients’ pulse and heart rate. The lesson began by review-
ing the basics of healthy heart rates and what the normal adult and child heart
rate ranges are. Then students got to practice being patients and doctors by
using stethoscopes to listen to each other's hearts and calculate BPM (beats
per minute). Our young scientists even got some light exercise to see if exer-
cise impacts their heart rate!

8th graders in Miss Falcone’s English classes have
been focusing on the theme of personal identity
as they begin to finish the novel, Miss Peregrine’s
Home for Peculiar Children. This week students
composed their own definition of personal iden-
tity as being special in your own way. Some of
our students identify themselves as funny, hard-
working, and out-
going. Students will
continue to analyze
this theme when we
return from the
Thanksgiving break.
Mrs. Della Fave reports that the grade 7
ELA classes are wrapping up their study of S.E.
Hinton’s classic young adult novel The Outsiders,
originally published in 1967, and still beloved even
today.
Discussions of the book have centered
around what it means to be a hero and that
sometimes we all feel like outsiders. In order to
really analyze the main character, Ponyboy, stu-
dents are assigned to create a Facebook profile
for him.
The grade 7 ELA teachers are planning a
screening of the 1983 film based on the novel as a
special treat for the students.
Students have truly enjoyed the novel and find it easy to relate to the characters in the tight-
knit Curtis family.

self. My goal is beat my last performance.”

November 17th marked the first day of the second
quarter! Can you believe it?
Ms. Falcone’s classes spent some time devising aca-
demic goals for the second marking period. Some
goals included:
Strengthen closing paragraph in night writes
Keep English binder more organized
Stay focused
Earn a 90 or above
Students will check in with goals at interim on De-cember 22nd and again at the end of the marking
period!
We are all Outsiders What is Your Personal
Identity?
Setting Goals for a Successful Second Marking Period
How crafty they are! Our theme the past few weeks in the Sewing and Crafts Club has centered
on books. Students used recycled materials to create tiny books for their
own use. Three weeks ago we used candy boxes and tissue boxes for the
book covers and regular printer paper for the pages. We used a hole puncher
and small pliable rings for the binding. Last week we made accordion-fold
books with cardboard and origami paper covers. This week we used Miss
Crafty’s new binding machine and recycled gift cards to make another version
of tiny books. Using the gift cards for the front cover and recycled cardboard
for the back, students punched the pages and covers and operated the binding
machine to perfectly bind their books.
