Definition• AIDS is not a disease, it’s a

syndrome• When the immune system

become weakened by HIV, the illness progresses to AIDS.

HIV• Human immunodeficiency virus• H- infects only human beings• I- immunodeficiency virus

weakens the immune system & increases the risk of infection

• V- virus that attacks body

AIDS• Acquired immune deficiency

syndrome• A- acquired, not inherited• I- weakens the immune system• D- creates deficiency• S- group of illness taking place at

same time

INTRODUCTION• AIDS is caused by HIV, a very fragile

RNA, a type of retro virus which is like other micro organism lives inside the leaving cell of the body.

• Outside body it doesn’t survive for more than half and hour.

TYPES• There are two types of HIV virus • HIV-1• HIV-2• HIV-1 is present all over the world &

in India more than 80% of population is affected by it.

HIV-2

• It is mainly found in Africa and also in India. Some people are affected by both the viruses. people only affected with HIV-2 lives longer than those infected with HIV-1 & the chances of transmission of HIV-2 is rear.

SIGN N SYMOTONS• Unexplained fever• Unexplained diarrhea• Persistent cough• Unexplained fatigue &

weight loss(more than 5 kg)

TRANSMISSION

Transmit through• Unprotected intercourse with

infected person.• Transfer of infected blood • Infected mother to her baby during

pregnancy• Use of infected needles &

instruments without sterilization.

Does not transfer through• Touching hands/shaking hands

• Shearing bathroom• Coughing, saliva, sneezing• Eating together or shearing utensils• Swimming pools• Shearing cloths• Mosquito bite• Patient care

General care• Adequate rest & diet rich in proteins

and vitamins• Infected person Should not donate

blood• Use protection• Avoid eating outside food• Give up smoking, alcohol, tobacco etc• Drink boiled water

• Regular exercise• Support from family and public

Can live 1-2 years longer.

Detection• There are various test available for

detection of HIV-AIDS• Spot test• Western blot (WB) test• CD4 & viral load test

HIV diseaseHIV can direct infect the :• Brain(HIV dementia)• Gut (wasting)• Heart(cardiomyopathy)
