Overview of Searching: Google vs. Catalogues

Google

• Search engine does most of the work

• Suggests other spellings

• Brings most likely relevant material to the top

• Access to full document

Traditional catalogues / databases

• Searcher needs to formulate searches carefully

• May not offer help on spelling

• Often relevant material way down the list

• Usually access to citation only

Overview of Searching: Google vs. Catalogues• Google search e.g. as you like it

Wikipedia often first result in search

Overview of Searching: Google vs. Catalogues• Catalogue search e.g. as you like it

Note: in many library catalogues and databases, typing in keywords without qualifiers can lead to

unsatisfactory results. Here, for example, the words as you like it are found anywhere in the record, not necessarily side-by-side or in the

same order.

Overview of Searching: Google vs. Catalogues• Catalogue search e.g. ‘as you like it’ – using single quotes to search exact phrase

Using a phrase search improves the results dramatically – all words must be adjacent and in the same order.

In the RIAM catalogue, enclose the phrase in single quotes.
