A Study of Artifacts We looked at the artifacts on several

hundred doors around Carnegie Mellon.

A Study of Actions We spent seven hours observing hallways

and taking note of person-door interactions.

Studying Actions

A Selection of Observations People glanced in doors as they walked down the

hall.

Person stopped in front of a door, tried to listen to activity in the office, but did not knock.

Person left their door open when they stepped out, to let an arriving visitor know they were going to be right back.

Person walked around outside an open door, to let the person inside the office know they were there.

Physical Tokens of Interruption

1. Visitor walks up to a closed door.

2. Instead of knocking, they choose a token from the bin by the door.

3. The visitor pushes the token through the slot in the door.

4. The sound and motion of the token coming through the door may interrupt
