To prune or not to prune...Understanding the natural "habit" orshape of shrubs will help you determine how to prune them. Allshoots grow outward from their tips.Whenever tips are removed, lowerbuds are stimulated to grow. Budsare located at nodes, where leavesare attached to twigs and branches. Each node produces from one tothree buds, depending on shrubspecies.
How to PruneThere are two basic types of pruningcuts: heading cuts, and thinning cuts.Heading cuts stimulate growth ofbuds closest to the wound. Thedirection in which the top remainingbud is pointing will determine thedirection of new growth. Make
heading cuts selectively to reduceshrub height and retain natural form.Thinning cuts remove branches attheir points of origin or attachment.Used in moderation, thinning cutsreduce shrub density without stimulating regrowth.
When to PruneLate winter or early spring, beforebud break, is usually the best time toprune many species because new tissue forms rapidly. Summer pruningtends to suppress growth of bothsuckers and foliage. Summerblooming shrubs should be pruned inearly spring prior to bud set, or insummer immediately following flowering.

From the hearth to the heart of the home:
21st century kitchens
What common theme uniteskitchens, houses and cars? Theyrepresent typically the three mostexpensive purchases people makethroughout their lives. Despite this,minute-for-minute, less time can beinvested in the design of, say, yourkitchen, than for trying clothes on.The advent of design softwareenables larger retailers to designkitchens quickly. However, thisindustrial approach won’t alwayssatisfy your current and futureneeds in detail sufficient to createthe design best suited for you.Costly buyer’s remorse, or at leastopportunities missed, might wellloom large after venturing down thisroute. Caveat emptor!Kitchens have evolved from the traditional domestic hearth and
washing area into the vibrant, beating heart of the modern home.Responsibility for creating thismulti-purpose space, where wonderful tastes and aromas mixeffortlessly with myriad social andentertaining uses, lies squarely atthe feet of the kitchen designer. As a matter of course, thoughtfuldesigners should acknowledge thisgrowing attitude towards kitchensas versatile, multi-functionalspaces. Taking the time to listen andunderstand each person’s needsand ideas, and create a kitchen thatreflects these, will help realise yourdream, satisfy lifestyle demandsand enable you to make the most ofthe heart of your home in the yearsahead. “Insomnia and other sleep problems”I hear many people talking aboutsleep these days – or rather lack ofit!! Difficulties in getting off to sleep, racing thoughts they can’t switch off,and/or waking in the small hoursseemingly wide awake yet knowingthey need more rest. Most of uscope with the odd disturbed night, but if insomnia persists it can put areal strain on the body weakeningour immune system making us moresusceptible to all sorts of infectionsand illness. I see lots of people inclinic who are having problems sleeping, and funnily enough, thatisn’t always what they initially cometo see me for. I often find if I cansort out the sleep then many othersymptoms are helped too. The herbsI use depends on many factors(decided best during consultation);whether someone has difficulties getting off or staying asleep, whetherthey have a lot of stress/anxiety orsometimes their adrenal glands mayhave problems switching off due tounderlying problems? I often useherbs such as valerian root, chamomile, limeflowers, lavender,California poppy or skullcap to helpgently encourage the mind to quieten
and support the nervous systemenough for sleepto improve. Imight considerpassionflower orborage if stayingasleep is the p r o b l e m .Passionflower mayalso be helpful if
pain contributes to the insomnia. Iwould always encourage you seekadvice from a medical herbalistbefore taking herbs intended forchildren or if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking pharmaceuticalmedication or suffering from otherhealth conditions – most times thereare herbs you can take safely, its justimportant to make sure! Pleasedon’t hesitate to contact me shouldyou require a consultation or aninformal chat about herbs for insomnia or any other medical condition. Lynda Jones BSc(Hons) MNIMHDip BER Medical Herbalist

Staying independentin your own home with Saga
Nobody wants to lose their
independence as they get older. They
want to carry on living the life they
have always led and enjoying the
freedom, comfort and security of
their own home.
As things change, however, many
people find they need a little help and
Saga offers two invaluable services to
keep them independent and living at
home.
Our personal alarm system - Saga SOS
- can help in an emergency with just one
press of an unobtrusive button worn as
a pendant, wristband or
beltclip. This instantly contacts our
24-hour control centre, which operates
365 days a year, and can immediately
summon help by contacting either the
emergency services or a chosen
keyholder.
It's the perfect solution for someone
living alone or when there's no close
family or friends nearby as Mrs Welman
of Kent found. When she was putting
out her wheelie bin a gust of wind blew
it on top of her. She was trapped
underneath the bin with a broken hip but
luckily Mrs Welman was wearing her
SOS alarm and pressed the button.
If a bit more support and practical help
around the home is needed, Saga
Independent Living's team of
well-trained carers can see to their
needs. From shopping, laundry and
cooking meals to assisting with
personal care such as bathing, shaving
and help getting up in the morning, we
can help with the things that people find
harder as they get older. We can even
provide 24-hour live-in care giving the
reassurance that someone is always
there to help.
One or both of these services can be
used to help someone remain living in
their own home with the peace of mind
that help is never far away.
Saga Independent Living is available in
Kent and is a Kent County Council
Approved Provider.
Please call 0800 068 8535 for more
information about Saga SOS and
0800 068 5059 for Saga Independent
Living, stating reference RP7001.

Over the last 13 years Utility
Warehouse has grown from just an idea
into a company now worth around £140
million and whose shares are traded on
the London Stock Exchange. A track
record second to none. This phenomenal
growth in turnover and profits has been
achieved by word of mouth “referral
marketing”. Jonathan Hamilton, local
distributor, is positive about the future: “I
am proud to have helped many homes and
businesses in Kent & the South-East cut
their bills substantially. The market for our
services is vast & I am currently on a
recruitment drive to expand my team of
distributors in the Folkestone & Hythe
area”. Get Paid Forever
How many people do you know who use
the phone, switch on a light, turn on the
oven or use the Internet? “The key to this
business is that you do the work once –
and then you get paid forever,“
commented Jonathan. Every time your
customers make a phone call, switch on a
light, turn on the heating or surf the net,
you could be getting paid. To receive your
ongoing income, you simply need to
maintain at least 6 personal customers,
and you can start earning money from day
one. And you don’t just earn money from
your own personal customers. As an ID
(Independent Distributor) you can
introduce other Executives to this
business and earn commission on what
their customers spend too.
Join the team!
Thousands of Executives have already
joined Telecom plus, and many of them
are either earning a significant monthly
income which is making a huge difference
to their lives, raising funds for community
projects close to their hearts, or generating
significant discounts on their utility bills.
But with less than 2% of UK households
currently using our services, you needn’t
worry about being too late to join.
